  1. The last time I was at RAF Mildenhall was probably in 1984. Well, that's not exactly true -- I visited it last night on Google Earth, which brought up some questions.

First, is the Top Four Club still there? The one out the back gate and across the street? What was the "lady's" name there that could recite the bold face as good as any crewmember? She had an old-style flight jacket covered with patches. Never mind, it just popped into my head; Baby Jane, right?

It looks as if all the old barracks have been replaced by newer dorms (God, I hate it when barracks are called dorms!! -- too Joe College). I'm talking about the barracks built around a quadrangle.

Does the base still host an open house every year? Air Fete, I think it was called. Or has the war on terror stopped that?

It looks as if Sherwood Forest is gone, too. I've heard some Rote horror stories about that area.

I did find the Bird in the Hand, but is Mickey's Tea Room still in existance?

    Thanks,

    Don R.

Which "Baby Jane" Grandma, Mom or Grandaughter?

  2. Heard from a good source today that it might be 48 weeks before all defective nuts are replaced.

Lockgreed ought to do this for free on the "j" acft as they were equiped "from the factory" with these defective nuts.

  3. Well, RZ, it is exactly where Lockheed put it. Most commercial -30's came without paratroop doors, so they installed a panel on the left side aft of where the door would be. Behind that panel is a hand pump & the controls for the ramp & door.

Shows that you can always learn something about the Herc.

  4. I remember 56-489 well, crewed her in 65 when she came up to lockborne from Sewart.

Planned to take her to Everux but she developed a leading edge fuel leak in #2 tank. Took 56-513 and stayd with her untill I went to FM school in late 65.

  5. Yeh Chic Anderson, got him one ORI , was scheduled for a check ride with him o dark thirty, I got to the base early, Chic wasn\'t there yet, just did my thing, went out preflighted the airplane, finished up , walked in and low and behold Chick walked in, Only 45 min late. He had to give me that one but the flying part was a killer.

Now I don\'t sign off on the bull crap of the ex Pittsburg acft being a 4 engine roll back. Be willing to bet the acft was on crossfeed and when the a/c made his evasion turn the centrifical force cavitated the pumps, note one engine was still running, I just cannot believe that the three other fuel controls were screwed up.

Pope hadn\'t had this acft long enough to degrade it to that point. Pittsburg has always had superior maint and they wouldn\'t let the acft get that way.

Another thing since the before takeoff checklist was not completed the apu door was open, wouldn\'t have taken 15 seconds to get that generator on line, he would have had all he needed to restart one or more engines.

Sad that the quality of some engineers is so poor.

My unit doesn\'t take brand new FEs. We don\'t have this problem. AD slick units are doing this - LRF\'s product is \"good enough\".

The Charleston unit takes the Little Rock Grads, and then evaluates them, actually retraining them at the unit.

When the Unit changed from 119\'s to Emodels in 75 we were given a two week fam course, a week in the \"B\" simulator at Charlotte and flew with an instructor until he felt we were ready for a check ride. Didn\'t take long, about a week, I had 14 hours in the E when I was let out on my own.

Yes I had previous 130 time in the AD in A Models. But that was in the mid sixties, I was out for a few years.

At That time you spent a lot of time in the books as you didn\'t know when ole Chic would drop in and give you a check ride. It\'s a lot different in a Guard unit, our section was always tight and helped each other to learn the systems.

Guess it\'s going back to the old deal in the ad when \"in the green\" was good enough.

AG - you\'re right. We practice this in the sim, it IS in the dash-1, and crews DO know about it.

All that said, I will say the knowledge level of pilots and FEs on the slick side of the house seems to be lower than in years past. No longer do FEs have to have 100hrs of instruction after they get to their unit with every flight a ground eval. No longer do pilots do any real training in the airplane. They are taught to fly numbers in the sim and are poor stick-and-rudder guys. Add to this, none of them are flying much low-level and they\'re simply not cutting it. We FEB an FE last year for GK!! Guy was supposedly an \"up and comer\" in slicks - sent him back. Incidentally, he was the FE on the Iraq crash...

Don\'t know about your unit, but Charlie West still does the 100 hour thing, with debriefings after each flight.

  8. It\'s going from 28 Chief\'s Guard wide to 7. Not much incentive for young kids coming up.

They haven\'t cut the Officers, kinda funny when a Nav section of 16 has 9 Lc\'s. Now that\'s where the money is.

When are the bead counters gonna realize that experience is in the guard and reserve and you cannot legislate this.

  9. Tom , when are you going to do another book, your description of events and inter colation with the members of this great unit made for an outstanding piece of work. I just wish there were more of it.

Maybe you could do a book on your C-5 conversion. That would be exciting to all of us.

Thanks for \"The Speed of Heat \"
