  1. Maybe someday 7785 can be configured to honor 0547. Since 7785 isn't even its real tail number why not let it stand in for 0547 Stray Goose 1.

    7785 is one of the Eagle Claw birds. I would like to see it preserved in a museum honoring that mission. If not 7785, then maybe 0565...

    There's so much history in these planes, it's hard to see any of them go into AMARG. Once in AMARG, it's tough to get them back out and before you know it, engines, wings, etc. are gone...

  2. Years ago, when I was stationed at Woodbridge, we would periodically struggle with these bins. The netting straps would rip, the fiberglass liners would crack, the net fasteners would break off and the loadmasters wouldn't be satisfied with the security of the nets. We even tried metal doors, but the P.J.'s didn't like those because some of their gear would protrude from the opening and the doors wouldn't close. Eventually we ordered new liners and had new, orange mesh nets made for the openings during our refurbs at Rhein Main.

    Good luck, it can be a big project and as soon as your complete and everyone is satisfied, they'll mod the planes and want them removed....

  3. Any reason why this plane is designated an HC-130J and not an HC-130N or P or something else. Why does it retain the J designation. I'm sure there's a reason for not giving it a new letter. Will everything built on the J airframe keep the J letter at the end?

  4. The "Old Grey color scheme" was the gloss grey paint with yellow trim like the weather birds have. I have seen pictures of all of the 67th birds in the paint except for 0220 (that I remember). When I got to Woodbridge in 1985, all of the planes were Euro 1 paint including 0220.

  5. A bit more I found on-line...

    February 24: A US Air Force MC-130P ‘Combat Shadow’ undergoing ground tests at Evenes Air Base in Norway went out of control, injuring one person and ending up in a snow bank.

    The MC-130P involved, 66-0220 is with US Special Operations Command Europe in Norway participating in Exercise ‘Cold Response’ 2010 running from February 17 until March 4, the largest exercise in the country this year. Around 8,500 soldiers including almost 1,000 Special Forces personnel from 14 nations are taking part, the main focus of the land operations taking place between Setermoen and Bjerkvik in Northern Norway.

    It is understood that the injuries to the person involved were slight, but they were taken to a hospital in Harstad as a precautionary measure.

  6. 66-0220. Known as "The Last Dragon" during my days at Woodbridge (85-92). Looks pretty bad. The IFR Pod is trashed. Hard to tell what's going on with the landing gear from that angle. It'll be interesting to see what the full story is. I'll bet the guy standing ground has an interesting tale to tell. Hope his interphone chord was nice and long...

  7. Tried to get Pima to take EC-130E 62-1818 before it rolled into the Boneyard and lost it's wings. They wanted nothing to do with it. It had a lot more history than the two Herc's currently on display - Vietnam, ABCCC, Desert One, Desert Storm, Bosnia, etc., etc., and it was stationed at DM. They still weren't interested...

    Get your templates and drills out...except for 1863. Her chine plates should already be drilled.

  9. Harrowing story. Pretty poor handling of the aircrew after the mission. I still don't get why CSAR assets are back under ACC. Seems to me they are better suited to be under AFSOC. Nice that their medals were downgraded...unbelievable...

  10. On the ISO work card deck, Card NO. 1-214 it says: D. FLOW CONTROL VALVE FILTER CONDITION; CLEAN BY ULTRASONIC METHOD (AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO 74-1658).

    The IPB does not show this filter. Has anyone ever delt with this before? Is the filter within the flow control valve? There should be one for the flt deck and cargo compartment. Thanks.
