  1. I was taught to set it to just below field elevation right before takeoff and during touch and gos, for the comfort of the crew and paxs. During climb I would reset it based on cruise altitude and the ability of the airframe to hold pressure. I did one other little trick to keep the under flight deck electronics cool, I would crank up the cabin altitude so the outflow valve would be passing air, if required based on airframe leakage.

  2. There is or was a chart in the front of the -1-1 that would allow the FE to determine which gauge was wrong, I used it all the time before placing the write-up in the 781. What happened to it? I too trusted the fuel flow first, plus it could also be verified with the fuel quanity indicators over a set period.

  3. By the way, the C-7 Caribou used flight engineers and no loadmaster. Sam

I was at the school house when the AF had the C-7s dumped on them. The AF looked at the current classes of FM and those with recip expererence were reassigned to the C7. There were some unhappy guys at Sewart.

  4. I went through the school house in 66 at Sewart we were Flight Mechs then, I think the realignment of the enlisted flying AFSC's was in 72, we were called Flight Engineers before that as the 130 check list changed in the late 60's. Some of the older guys replied FE to the check list but the school taught FM. The late 70's brought about all FE's going to performance school.

  5. Last I heard Kenny died. I was TDY with him doing flare drops at Williams, seems like we had 2 or 3 birds, anyway we were tossing down some cold ones and a bar maid came up and sniffed his neck and said,

"what do you have on that smells so good?" Kenny leaned back and said, "A hardon but I didn't think you could smell it". He was a fairly decent guitar picker or was I drunk when he played.

  6. Injunears are highly trained and knowledgable, looking at the newer Hercs it has taken a big ass computer to replace us. Us switcheflippers could always cool you strapstrechers down with the turn of a knob or the flip of a switch. Checked set/out
