Photo Credit http://www.shephardmedia.com Lockheed Martin announced the delivery of the 2400th C-130 Hercules that it has manufactured on its production line in Marietta, Ga. The company said Marietta's Hercules assembly activities represent "the longest continuously operating military aircraft production line in history." The 2,400th C-130 is an Air Force MC-130J special-mission aircraft destined for beddown at Cannon AFB, N.M. This aircraft's delivery follows a record year for C-130J production in 2011, with 33 C-130Js supplied, a new high for the C-130J model, according to the company. These 33 C-130Js were in six different configuratio…

From the AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION C-130XJ as Affordable Option: Lockheed Martin officials are pushing a new variant of the C-130J aircraft to international customers who may not need the full tactical capability of the current airlifter, said Jim Grant, the company's vice president for air mobility programs. The C-130XJ, as the aircraft is dubbed, will cost 10 percent to 15 percent less than the C-130J model used by the Air Force, he said. Customers who typically don't do a lot of engine-running offloads will have the option of removing the fully automated cargo handling system and its underfloor winch, said Grant. In its place, Lockheed would use the above-ground winch si…

A video of the early BQM-34A and then the -34B. Demonstration flights flown by the 6514th Test Squadron of the AF Flight Test Center. The vehicle was flown using a nose TV camera. The missile was launched using a separate sensor display. The -34A launched the Maverick, Stubby HOBO in test flights. The early -34A lacked asymmetric flight capability thus during missile launch a weighted shape was dropped from the opposite wing. The later -34B included a laser designation nose and could fly without the weighted shape. It is shown launching a Maverick and a Shrike missile. These demonstration flights starting in 1972 showed the capability of defense suppression in a program c…

Out of the Shadow Emerges the Commando II: Air Force Special Operations Command has changed the name of its new MC-130J aircraft. Gone is Combat Shadow II. In its place is Commando II, announced command officials Thursday. "This name best reflects the multi-mission role of the aircraft and the units that will fly them," said Lt. Gen. Eric Fiel, AFSOC commander. It also "embodies the broader linage of special operations force aircraft," he said. The Air Force's original Commando was the C-46 transport that served from World War II until the late 1960s. Before settling on Commando II, AFSOC officials said they also considered Combat Arrow and Combat Knife. The MC-130J is de…

From the Air Force Association: Down the Line, One Last Time: The last MC-130E Combat Talon I to enter programmed depot maintenance before the MC-130 fleet is retired has nearly finished its final refit, according to officials at Robins AFB, Ga., home of the depot. Tail No. 62-1843—the oldest Combat Talon I still in service—was in "pretty bad shape upon arrival," noted Kevin Johnson, 560th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron MC-130 line supervisor. "There is generally a good bit of work for everyone involved—structural and avionics-wise," added George Hoffman, 560th AMXS PDM flight chief. Consistently deployed, often supporting clandestine operations in austere condition…

http://www.macon.com/2012/05/08/2018773/c-130-pilot-sees-plane-for-first.html - I put this in the Video and Image section originally as a response to Chris Shutz' thread about his visit to the Robins Museum but since it's news, it belongs here. I talked to Mack right after the airplane went to Robins and at the time he didn't know if it was the airplane he flew or not. Crawford Ingraham was his engineer and Al Collins from 5th APS at Evreux was second loadmaster. He couldn't remember who his crew loadmaster was. There is an article about the airplane's delivery at www.troopcarrier.org/convention.html. Mack is planning to attend. There's a lot of information about Dragon R…

Filmed a couple months ago in Coolidge, AZ Our latest TV show appearance, Top Gun Korea. The storyline was that the first parachute failed. Didn't surprise me as there was nothing but a block of styrofoam in the parachute bag. That first car was really flat after it hit. So, the story goes, they had one more chance to get it right but the host of the show had to jump in with it. He acted scared but had it been me, there wouldn't have been any acting required. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_u8kTLiASg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUhBcIHdjGk John L

The word on the street is that 62-1829 is going to be a static display outside LRAFB at the new off campus Education complex?? I caught a glimpse of some nose writing displaying "City of Jacksonville" and a Razorback just above it. We'll see how this turns out. Dave

I was just going through some old records I have stored. I was in the 41st TAS at Naha. Tech Sargent Robert Lawson was my NCOIC. I was the assistant crew chief on 55-025. The crew chief was Ronald Johnson. It is a shame the memory isn't better. Maybe too many brews! Hahaha! Of course this was 40 years plus ago.......

Goodbye, Old Friend: Members of the 79th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., executed the unit's final mission in the HC-130P personnel recovery airplane. The squadron is transitioning to the new, more capable HC-130J model and expects to commence operations with it in October, according to a base release. The final HC-130P sortie came on Sept. 12 as a crew took the aircraft out for roughly seven hours, states the release. Upon landing, squadron colleagues and family members greeted the crew on the flightline to mark the occasion. Lt. Col. Christopher McCarthy, a 563rd Rescue Group instructor pilot, who was the aircraft commander on the sortie, said he thinks the…

With only the loadmaster on the new 130,s and 17ns as the loan inlisted man it must be awful lonely. At least in the old E's there were two who could go to the mess hall, or movie or sightsee together when on trips.
