KoenL
Heard that work to break down the old C-130K's at RAF Lyneham has started this week. XV217, 220, 290 and 305 are unfortunate ones. Koen
bobdaley
I had not heard about 290. Seems strange RAF got 66 K model Herks, probably has 10 or 11 left and so far none have been preserved. Bob
Jansen
From "Securing Britain in an Age of Uncertainty: The Strategic Defence and Security Review": "withdraw the C-130J Hercules tactical transport aircraft from service by 2022, a decade earlier than planned, as we transition to the larger and more capable A400M aircraft;" A bit surprising, considering that they will only have been around for 20-25 years. I think they will likely be sold off to some African countries and rewinged to the new center wing box that entered production last year. KoenL
They had to save money somewhere so they had to pick the C-17A, A400M or C-130 to get rid of. Since the A400M can probably do almost everything they do with their Hercs and neither the C-130 or A400M can fullfill the C-17's role it was inevitable. Who knows, in ten years they might change their mind again but otherwise I'm sure they won't have too much trouble selling C-130J's even if they have the highest hours of any C-130J's right now. Le Addeur noir
The fatigue index is being used up on these airplanes at a high rate, and as long as the Brits stay in Afghanistan, this will continue. Another decade, and they will be nearly worn out. Any further delays to the A400M,and these birds will be around post 2022.

INS/Dopplertroop
So cool and yet the aircraft, a B-model, was practically brand new in 1962. It's a wonder the Brits don't put one of those K's at their Air Museum in Duxford. It's a great visit.

bobdaley
Does anyone know if the two other RAF Herks scheduled to be brpken up have been broken up or sent to the scrapper. Xv197 that was a test frame at Boscombe Down and XV 304 that landed gear up at Brize Norton? Thanks Bob Last count I have shows 12 RAF K's flyable: 177, 188, 196, 200, 202, 209, 214, 221, 290, 295, 301, 303.
KoenL
XV304 was still reported at Brize 3 weeks ago.
bobdaley
A couple of years ago two Herks broken up by Marshall's, XV184 and XV199 were reported as scraped to Hitchin UK. With the similarity of names could they have gone to Hixon too and not Hitchin? Thanks Bob
KoenL
Military Aircraft Markings' update PDF reports both having been scrapped at Cambridge. It reports May 13th 2009 for XV184 and May 18th 2009 for XV199. http://www.aviation-links.co.uk/MAMupdate48-2009.pdf

bobdaley
290 was moved to the scrapping area at Lyneham in January. That leaves 11 flyable K's. Also 303 is going to MOC to get the wings of 304. Bob
