  1. I sure hope that you are able to get 460.One of my daughters visited the A&S museum and asked about the aircraft (I had told her that it had been one of our acft. at Evreux). The person she spoke to knew nothing of the acft. Didn't  even know they had it.

As great as that museum is sometimes it just leaves you scratching your head!

  2. Geeze,RZ where you been?

There's only one or two "A's" left with Aero Prod.3 blades left and still flying.I'd have to think parts would be a real problem. And that's just for the props themselves.ATE boxes and the wireing between the prop and the rest of aircraft would more problems. Those 3 bladers liked lots of TLC in the best of times!Your friend would be better served with an "A" with 4 blades or a later model.

  3. During Torquemeter and Safety Coupling installation, install new lock tabs and bolts, torque bolts and then bend lock tabs forward over bolt heads. Can I use hammer and punch pin to do this work? Thank you for any suggestion!

If that is the only way you can bend the tabs over-do it.But don't over do the bend or peen the tab.

  4. Yeah,E6, a great place to start.Reminds me of a Tech. with 11 years TIG.Made master and said at roll call on the day of his promotion " When I made Tech. and the orders said permanent,I didn't think it was going to be this permanent".

  5. Didn't witness this but was told of a crew of which nearly all had just gotten promoted. The entire crew went out and got really soused.Had to fly the following day.Showed up at the acft.Didn't do much of a preflt.Started engines, taxied to the end of the runway.Waited for clearance,it was delayed. Finally came through.Tower called repeatedly,no response.Ops sent a truck out to see what the problem was.Entire crew dead to the world.

  6. Looks like the wing tip cap is the only damage. If it was further in, like into #4 main tank there would be a lot fuel all around the tip...I would think. You can knock or shear the tip (Cap) and not get into the tank...if you are lucky as we were in Tief, Saudie Arabia on our last D.S. rote. Took the tip shards off, speed taped it and flew back to King Fhaud apt. A good day. Bill:)

Now thats a keepsake.Who got to hang it on the wall at home?

  7. I found it difficult to sleep on the Herk when the engines were running.I did sleep in the bird on the ground while waiting for parts when cross country. The most memorable was in Nice,France while waiting for a fresh prop from Evreux. It was late at night and the bird from home was way overdue.I opened the aft door and ramp and thought I'll wake up when he taxis up to me.Didn't happen that way.He nearly had his radome in my cargo compartment before I woke up.

  8. Don,Now that I give it some thought, there was one time I got hands on a load of c-rats.I was on the maintenence team at Pau,France for the Pau JT in '62.I noticed the army troops getting rid of rats every day. They were takeing them across the road from the air port entrance and dumping them in a ditch.I asked if I could take some .They said help yourself. The team was

pretty well set for the duration.

  9. We had the tie down chains in bins along side the bottom ramp door, don't remember how many there were. The binders were hanging close to the bins and the straps were hanging next to them.

I tried to keep 3 cases of "C" rations in the upper door and a case or 2 of Mcgoo.

I never saw any of the jump platforms or the loading ladders. We either let the ramp down or had the Pax enter through the crew door.

We used "J" Bars alot before we got the dual rails but I don't remember where we stowed them or the ladder we used for Maint purposses, or the Pogo stick.

Pogo stick:just aft of the flt.deck steps.Step ladder:aft side of "245".J-bars were brought out to the acft.by 780 troops if needed for a mission and stowed by the loady wherever he deemed fit.The platforms were 780 I think but I never saw the boarding ladders either.I could never get my hands on 3 cases of c-rats at the same time,1, maybe 2 but never 3.

  10. Fortunate for me, I worked the TF RADAR on the Blackbirds (Talon Ones), and they always took a crew chief, ECM, and RADAR troop on just about every TDY.

At Evreux it was SOP that if an acft. was slated to land anywhere other than home base,a crewchief or assistant C/C must be aboard. There was one exception. So crewchiefs and assistants got alot of flight time. Some of us got hours in the "middle "seat. It was no problem getting hours to draw your H/D pay.As already said by many-Herk's the best!

  11. But do you remember when the A Models had Parts of the tail and wings panted Magenta? I am all most 75 and it is amazing how much I have forgotten.

    SURE DO!

  12. I've been away from 130s since early '65 and that was on "A" models.Until I came upon this site in the late '90s I didn't know squat about Bs,Es,Hs or any of the many variations of the models.I know the" A"s had quite a few shortcomings.Needed more range,a stronger empenage,a little more power and much better props.Stronger wings wouldn't have hurt either but even the" J " needs a stronger wing but I've got to believe that in some ways the "A"s were better thought out than later models.

  13. Looking at the valve, and we are seeing it from inside the bay,the flapers opening into the bay would allow the higher outside pressure to enter the bay equalizing the pressure.Another question is how is the pressure equalized on climbout to altitude?I don't remember seeing that valve on A models.Dosen't Lockeed have tech reps somewhere near you?
