  1. FL330, over Iraq nonetheless. Needless to say, extending flaps a little bit helped us get up there!
  2. H2s have the better radar (AN/APN-241) and got rid of the old PPI. Instead, they have the Radar Display unit which can display your flightplan (inputted via SCNS) with weather and TCAS overlays. Really nice, just not good for being SKe wingman, but who ever really uses the PPI? Also, they have the funky ADI and HSI, where you have to set the course and HDG bug down by the autopilot. Also, flushable toilet with urinals on the aft side of 245 (think plastic containers, don't drain outside). The H2s also have the emergency exits located in front of the prop arcs instead of behind. Also, yes, the wing isolation valves are gone with only the bleed air divider valve. If you don't know, the nice thing about the divider valve is that it allows the FE isolate part of the bleed air system while allowing pressurization with one unit unlike the E, H, H1 where you lose both packs if both isolation valves had to be closed.
  3. As I have an assignment to the 62nd, it's good that they'll be getting H2s. However, The H1s would be better suited for AETC duty. I joke with my buds that although I'll be at the Rock, I'd be flying Dyess H1s with prior Dyess aircrew. Besides, has anyone ever tried to teach a new stud how to fly SKE wing on an H2 without the PPI/DVST and the "old-school" ADI? Personally, I didn't care too much for the H2, but it does have a toilet!

  5. Yeah, before I came to IP school, we were hashing out a training plan for LCADS (now LCLA) for our guys before they headed to afghanistan. I believe our unit was the first AMC unit to do this. It's quite similiar to LAPES in that it is performed at a very low altitude. The pilot actually calls the drop (sorry navs). The chute is very much like a plastic tarp.

    What did this do to the navigation systems on the herc? I've never heard of the AN/ARN-97 nor is it mentioned in the -1.

  10. While here at IP school, we visited the FTD (where they train mx how to fix planes without taking them to the flightline). Anyway, at the flight control section, one of my classmates pointed these latches/loops on the vertical stab. We asked around, but no one knows. Any idea?
  11. Last night prior to starting, my FE noticed that the #3 LSGI buttom had a light bulb in it and when jiggled, the button would light up. Anyone know why the LSGI buttons were lit? Nothing in the Dash 1 explains this.

  13. You'll then get a kick out of this. Our bottom beacon/strobe tested inop before we (aka the Os) showed up to the plane. I double checked with the FE if we really needed it per the MEL and of course we did. Also, the newer Js have a IR beacon on the top of the vert stab. Furthermore, Marine herks that I've seen have the strobe at the vert stab as well. But you're probably right, it was moved so someone doesn't have to go all the way to the top. PS I bet anything the wiring is still present in the vert stab...
  14. Yokota is supposed to get some of Dyess' H1s. It wouldn't suprise me if Dyess' Hs went to Yokota and Yokota sent some of its H1s to Little Rock.
  15. As a -130 pilot, I've noticed some changes that have occured throughout C-130s around the world. One of the things I don't understand is why the position of the upper beacon/strobe was moved to the upper fuselage from the vert. stab? Anybody know why this is? In this position, it is harder to see this beacon/light. On the vert. stab it is much more visible. The funny thing is, certain herks in the USAF have it in on the stab and others have it on the upper fuse? Also, does anyone know the reason for having flashing navigation lights and their real function since we do have a beacon (should be used for running APU/GTC and engines as well as aircraft movement)? Does anyone have any other questions on why things are they way they are on ther herk?
  16. One thing I love about the Talon 2 is the lack of SKE. I was working an airshow a couple of years ago at Randolph and some of the retired instructor pilots there had flown at Dyess. They had all said that nothing has changed since the early 90s aside from the NVG harness, E-TCAS, and EVSI/TCAS display. Yes, all of our H1s and Super Es have sextant ports and flare gun ports. Some of our planes still have the RATO panel on the center console by the LSGI buttons!!! It would be nice to have NVG compatible lighting without that annoying and extremely expensive NVG lighting harness and EHSI and EADI. If we just got those few things, life would be so much nicer. All the seat cushions need to be replaced as well. I think they've been around since Oregon Aero first made them. They're all harder then bench seating at a little league game.
