No one seems to have mentioned it yet but Ralph Krach, who was once active on the old C-130 forum, passed away back in July. Here is his obituary. http://www.riemannfamily.com/obituaries/Ralph-Krach/ My first encounter with Ralph was in the fall of 1965 and TDY to Mactan and flying the new Bangkok Shuttle. Early one evening around sundown we went into Taklhi, Thailand with a load of hazardous cargo and were parked on the hazardous cargo ramp. The aerial port ramp tramp told me there was going to be a delay for our outbound load because of a high priority mission. A few minutes later, an unmarked C-130A pulled in and parked beside us next to an Air Force flatbed loaded wi…

Brenda Anderson, Chick's wife, passed away a couple of weeks ago. Chick is at home in Boise. I talked to him about a week ago. He says he's doing fine. If you know Chick and would like to give him a call, drop me a note at [email protected] and I'll give you his number. Brenda was diagnosed with breast cancer around 2007 but she beat it. Then a new cancer was diagnosed about two years ago. Brenda was a really good lady. She was Carolyn's, Chick's first wife, best friend. She went to California to care for Carolyn before Chick retired and they later married.

If anyone is interested, I've written several new books and revised my C-130 book (added pictures) and troop carrier history (ditto.) They're all available on Amazon. If anyone wants autographed copies, I am now set up for Pay Pal. Check www.sammcgowan.com/books.html for details on how to order. I have written a sequel to The Cave which is set at Clark in 1969-71. The title is MORTAR MAGNETS.

I wanted to let everyone know that the Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift Association reunion/members meeting will be in Little Rock May 4-7, 2016. We had a good turnout in Tucson a year ago and are expecting a larger one in Little Rock. Check the web site for details - www.troopcarrier.org. We'll be in Dayton in 2018 and will be placing a memorial to troop carriers/tactical airlifters who gave their lives in WW II, Korea, SE Asia and the Cold War. If anyone would like to contribute, drop me a note at [email protected] and I'll tell you where to send it. We've got over $6,000 raised already. TCTAA Membership Application.pdf

Don Lehtola passed on 1 Sept in Pearl MS. Don was an IP/FE at Langley when I first met him in 1969. Before that he had been an enlisted mechanic at Otis AFB and a C-130AC at CCK. He left Langley and was the AF Adviser to the MS ANG. He retired at Jackson and went to work for First Miss Corp as their chief pilot. I used to see him in Dallas often. Great pilot and great friend. I start to apologize in advance if this subforum is not the proper place to add this thread. Well all i wanted to say is that I'm available for eventual flights (not looking for a career right now). I have a current ATPL(A) C-130/L-382 with IR(ME) and a class 1 medical. I also have experience as an AC in airdrops (CDS, Heavy, paratroopers, door bundles, etc), formation flight (including airdrop in formation) and low level navigation in several parts of the globe. If anyone knows of any options or requests for eventual flights (movements, hauling for depots or similar) please let me know. Thank you in advance

Many of you know CMsgt Doug Grant & his "crew chief" Joanie. Their home was the "hardstand" for many an airlifter over the years. How many meals she served us all can never be counted. She fought cancer for the last 7 yrs or so and was "promoted" from aircrew status to heavenly angel wings this week. Joan's wake this evening was attended by many ole' airlifters. She would have loved to see so many all together. She will be missed by us all. If you'd like Doug's address to send a card-private email me pls.

"Non-Sked Fred" Kreppein, an icon in the commercial Herc community passed away early this morning after a long fight with cancer. He was the first captain I flew with as a commercial FE. Fred started his aviation career as a Connie FE flying on the North Slope of Alaska. He was also an Electra FE with Saturn Airways. He then moved to a window seat with them. For a time, he also flew USAF C-130E's for Byrd Air into Phnom Penh, Camodia. He then went to fly Khadaffi's C-130's back a forth between Libya and Nicaragua. From there, he flew for Southern Air Transport and Transamerica. I flew with him at St. Lucia Airways, Transafrik and Frameair. His last flying job …
