herky400M
Hello C-130 world; on the T56-A-15 there are several kind of oilcoolers used. those with augmentation and those without. my questions: 1) what kind of inspection 2) daily bases, monthly... 3) diffrences
tinyclark
During all of the pre, post & thru flight inspections, the inlet and exhaust ducts are checked. During post flight, ISO and HSC: CLEAN AND LUBRICATE THE OIL COOLER ACTUATOR ROD IN ACCORDANCE WITH T.O. 1C-130H-2-12JG-20-1. (AIRCRAFT WITH OIL COOLER AUGMENTATION INSTALLED. There is a 30 day requirement to wash the cooler in desert ops.

Lkuest
It's not the oil coolers themselves that have augmentation, all the oil coolers are interchangeable between engines with and without augmentation. It's the engine nacelles themselves that determine whether or not you have augmentation. You may already know this, but from your statement, I was a little confused. As for your question, tinyclark is 100% correct about the inspection reqirements. I just want to add that curled blades in the oil cooler intake are normal, but if you are having problems maintaining oil temperature, in flight or on the ground, and your propeller blade angles are set correctly, curled blades may be causing it. If you don't have oil temperature problems, don't worry about it. Also, oil cooler intakes are a common bird strike area.
Dan Wilson
The later type of oil cooler does not have any thermostatic bypass, idiotic idea to say the least. Cooler flap sticks on the full open position on a cold day and whamo, your pressures are off scale in no time flat. Back in my 37th TAS days had cooler flap c/b pulled and strapped (seems like every plane had two or more pulled and strapped back then) and on climb out the thermostat bypass failed open running all the oil through the cooler regardless of temp. Within two farts from the loadmaster's cheek's, the GB oil press was well over 500 psi and oil temp was down to 25 and falling. Yeah, no need to have a bypass eh. Dont believe that idiot statement in the -1 about oil temps stabilizing at 50 or whatever number they have in there, it just aint so. Also, if you have trouble maintaining oil temps (too high) inflight, one thing that isn't mentioned is your oil cooler flap may be opening too far at 100% setting. If it opens too far it will actually disrupt the airflow through the cooler. Dan Edited December 9, 2009 by Dan Wilson
