I just got in the crash report on this C130 (attached), and need some help from your membership. It lists a "Misson Number". Would this be a routine sequential number used for the flights (or) would there be further documentation filed somewhere that gives the purpose of WHY they were going to SVN.

I can't remember exactly what the justification was for the weird arrangement at Naha, with the airplanes and maintenance personnel assigned to the 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing and the aircrews and operations personnel assigned to the 6315th Operations Group. It had something to do with AFM 66-1, and was related to the 51st FIW being the host unit on the base at Naha. As far as I know, the 6315th was on the only C-130 troop carrier group. All of the TAC C-130 bases had full wings, complete with Headquarters, OMS and FMS. It may have had to do with when the 21st TCS transferred to Naha in 1958 and equipped with C-130s. Friends of mine I knew at Pope after I got there in 1…

A Talon retired today at Cannon. 64-0523 c/n [cn]4007[/cn].....I heard it's going to be the gate guard. I'm not familiar with it, but I heard it was #1 during the Son Tay raid. Heard the pilot of that flight came on and shut the engines down for the last time. There was a big event for it today...a sad but proper farewell. Any of you "old heads" gpt any stories about her? CTI A/C 64-0523 Retirement <---paste that into the search bar on Facebook and you can see some photos of the event.

I came across these photos of 64-0524 (4008) in the gallery. Does anyone know the history of them -- when, where and how? Thanks, Don R.

OK, it's time for my occassional request for photos of 64-0550 after it ran off the runway at NAS Naples, Italy back in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I don't think I've requested them on this "new" board and since there are a lot of new faces here (as compared to the old web site), I figured I'd try again. I know there are some photos out there as I saw them after they moved the airplane from the end of the runway to the Navy ramp. It sat there for a long time before being repaired. All I can remember is that the FE was TSgt Billy Legg & the copilot was 1Lt Bill Beale. He was making the landing and came in extremely fast. They went around, I think, & came in…

Does anyone out there have any photos of 64-0550 (4045) @ Naples when it broke off one of the main gear assemblies (left, I think) after a screwed up landing? This was in the late 70\'s or early 80\'s. It sat there for a long time before flying out. All I remember of the crew were the co-pilot was Bill Beale & the FE was Billy Legg. I had a line on some pics a couple of years ago, but it didn\'t work out. Thanks in advance. Don R.

Since new members are always joining this site, here's my annual question again. Back in the late 1970's, when the 37th TAS was cranking up at Rhein Main, a C-130, 64-0550 went off the end of the runway at NAS Naples, Italy. It landed at a very high rate of speed and at one time did a 180° and was going down the runway backwards at more than 100 knots. It was in such an attitude that even the tip of one of the horizontal stabs was damaged! I remember the co-pilot's name was Bill Beal and the FE was Billy Legg. My question; does anyone have any photos of the airplane at Naples? I know there are pics out there -- I've seen them. Thanks, Don R.

OK, it's been more than a year since I posted this request, but there are a lot of new members now who might be able to help. Back in the late 1970's not long after the 37th TAS was reactivated at Rhein Main, 64-0550 was involved in a serious landing accident at the US Navy facility at Naples, Italy. The left MLG (I think) was torn out. It sat at Naples for a long time and was then temp repaired and flown to Lockheed for the permanent repairs. All I remember was that it was a co-pilot landing (Lt, Beal) at an extremely high speed. The airplane did a 180 and wound up off the end of the runway. Even the bottom of the horizontal stab was damaged so it must have been …

Anyone got any history of 65-0979? Somebody asking about it on Facebook. Apparently it's with NASA now. I flew it from Robins post PDM back to Edwards back in late 90's or early 2000s. I think it was a drone bird at one time. Bomb back on the bottom was a later mod it appears. I wanna say Edwards was the last AF unit to own it. I think it was loaned to the Navy for something. It appears it went to Boneyard around 2009. From there NASA bought it. Did it have a Rotodome installed at one time? I edited the post. Guess is a 1965 model rather than a 64

I was just wondering if anyone had any historical knowledge of Acft 64-14854. I am currently DCCing her, my second and third wipe would like to use her old name or use the history behind it to create a new one. The historian over here hasn't really come up with anything. Thanks

Hey guys and gals, I'm looking for information regarding the history of my aircraft. The tail number is 64-14865. I have talked to some people about it. The aircraft is retiring next month. Any info is Helpful

Anyone have the scoop on this tail #? Started life as an HC-130H and its in the old fulton recovery films also seen pictures with ODS rails installed on it Then it went to an EC-130H? Then it was a C-130E with UARSSI but it still had the extended gear pods that the EC-130H's have Then it was modded back to EC-130H? All pictures I have seen make me think it was the TC-130H at DM The picture that is attached is what really threw me for a loop. It is clearly an old hc-130 (scanner window) with ec-130h extended gear pods and uarrsi but it has a spectre (AC-130) patch painted above the crew door? Was this some kind of test bed for gunships? It seems to certainly be a…

Hi, I am looking for the history of 66-0212. I was told that it flew in a famous prison raid in vietnam as an HC-130? In my unit we have 212, 216, 219, and 223, they are all MC-130P's now.

Last I heard, 68-10940 was a ground trainer at Pope. Apparently it went to Nashville: http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/Lockheed-C-130E-Hercules/2356943/L/ although looking at the caption it is on the move again. Andy

Saw this , this AM. 758AS at Pitt AFRC got 8 C-130H's from OKC ANG. 78-0806-0813. Pitt is now getting C-17's 4 of the H's are in AMARG 07,08,09,10. The other 4 are now loaned to 39RQS AFRC at Patrick. They are supposed to go to AMARG next year, 39RQS is flying them because all but one of their HC's were sent to AMARG because of corrosion. Interesting that the 1 HC that they have is 64-14852, the oldest flying USAF Herk. Bob

I was 19 years old when we received our first C-130A's at Ardmore AFB, Oklahoma. I was in the 773 Troop Carrier Squadron as an Aircraft Instrument Repairman. I worked on all 16 of our aircraft and I do not remember any of the numbers. Do any of you know which 16 aircraft the 773rd received??? I am now 74 years old with slipping memory. Snowyday

I seem to have lost the thread where we had more old newspaper clippings of the crashes posted. Anyway they were saved and the webpage has been updated with 2 more clippings and the crew losses for those crashes. These 2 news clippings are from 1969. http://www.tanwater.com/834/dex2.html#line4 Latest updates include; Go to 834th webpage for the full size clippings and the crash reports. I still have a lot more information to update and some more pictures to post. It is a work in progress. Please be patient if you sent me pictures or documents and they have not yet been posted. Jim

Not sure if this 1955 video has been posted here before but even if it was I think it's worth reposting. There's some interesting T&E stuff in here. But, it has some stats/limits that I've never seen like a cruise ceiling of 40,000'. Also, the model of the nose ski looks just about like the finished product. Enjoy! FredG

If you are interested in very early operations of the C-130 in Vietnam and throughout SEA please go to my "My Gallery", then click on MY ALBUMN. I have posted 12 documents that trace my movements in the 1965 and 1966 time frame. Included are a number of documents (now declassified), that were taken from the "Official History of the 314th TCW" that illustrate the difficulty that we had in starting up combat operations in the new war zone. I thought I had up loaded them in proper time frame order, but they did not post in proper order. You will find my TDY orders to Okinawa, administrative orders moving me into the 776th in preperation for further TDY to SEA, then there are…
