Robert Podboy
At elevation AMSL 1,814 ft / 553 m is Jalalabad considered a hot-and-high takeoff airport for a C-130J?
pjvr99
Would need to know the OAT and pressure alt at the time
Robert Podboy
Peter… thanks,It makes sense to calculate prior to flight… Hopefully the super J is better at ‘getting it up’ than the legacy models.
tinyclark
I remember when the C-130 gunships were leaving Korat RTAFB in '75. They were using the entire runway to get off the ground because they were so heavy. My neighbor from downtown was a loadmaster, and he had all kinds of stuff he was taking with him, including two huge bags of Thai hot peppers. Robert Podboy
Correction: I should have said… Hopefully the super J is as good as or better at ‘getting it up’ than the legacy models. Considering more blades and all.
PerfManJ
The OAT would have to be >90F to fall off the torque limit. For Afghanistan, that seems like a pretty benign elevation.
AMPTestFE
It could be hot, but it's not high....
Tango
Given the elevation of 1800' and temp in Sep-Oct, it translates to Temp Dev +10 to +20. This is by no means 'hot & high' in this part of the world. For J its about a take off roll of 4000' even with MTOW.
