  1. Alan, I was on a mission that night...Tsn to Quinon to Danang..arrived Danang at 2050 departed Danang at 2155 went to Hue but the field was under attack so we went back to Danang and landed at 2245.....got refraged to Quantri departed Danang at 2345 arrived Quangtri at 0035 departed Quangtri at 0100 and headed to TSN. On the way we heard about the 122 attack and found out later that the B model had parked in the same spot that we had left only 30 minutes earlier. It was a big OH SHIT moment for us. ...fortunately the whole crew was in ops and no one got hurt. Muff
  2. 100% if stuck in the mud and you shovel most of the mud from infront of the MLG tires. Muff
  3. Yea, it was you as I recognized the black patch at the lower front of the vertical stab...is that some sort of antenna? The real C-130s did not have that {:-)) Muff
  4. Who was that nav wih wore wild like purple clothes..he also had an echo box that he would make wierd calls over the airways in SEA. He even had a fur seat on his motorcycle. Quite sweet character. Muff
  5. That sure would be John Grillo...always a fun guy to be around, only great memories about John, remember the true story about him getting a speeding ticket for riding his bicycle too fast? I have not heard a word about John since the mid 1970s----anyone know where he might be? John was the guy who got our frag orders/directions over the phone from the Paris peace talks for our mission to Hanoi the day after the cease fire. Muff
  6. Wu, you have good memory...yes I do remember that heavy rain and the hairy approach to Futenma...not to worry as that Marine base will soon be closed and moved out to Bolo point or Guam. Those were the fun days flying....Is Bud Stokes still around...haven't heard his name in years. And how come you have not posted your profile on this board? Maybe more of us know you...who the hell is "Wukong" ? Welcome home and stay in touch. Muff
  7. During the 60s the C-130s at Kadena were from Naha AB,Okinawa. They were on alert status and we refered to the mission as the planes were on a "cage" mission. The C-130s were naked...bare aluminum with the standard red white blue winged stars and the tail numbers were black. Also these would have had the three bladed props. I do not remember them having the big tail letters. Muff Naha AB 1963-1965
  8. Jim, I was up at Dobbins today around 3:30 PM and I guess it was you in that beautiful new gray bird flying downwind...congrats on providing great airframe to the AF. Muff
  9. Bruno Fronzaglio Bruno was a good friend of mine...haven't heard his name for over 20 years. Great guy, wonder what he is up to these days. He and I were stationed at Mactan/Clark mid 60s, and again at CCK early 70s. Muff
  10. Alan, did you have a Flight Engineer on that flight back to Boen Hoa? If so why didn't he hit you a good one up the side of the head...welcome home glad you were LUCKY enough to make it back. Muff
  11. Congrats Dave, I completed FE school at Sewart Tenn, just before the move to LR...1969. When I got back to Pope I flew with the RTU folks...qualifing pilots and navs from other aircraft to the C-130 prior to their assignments to SEA (Clark and CCK). I flew mornings, afternoons and some night flights. two or three days a week many times morning and afternoons. Busted the flying time per month several times. I gained tons of knowledge and built up flying hour experance....my goal then was to be an IFE....took me a couple of years and finally made it. But there was always others that I flew with that knew soooo much more. When someone gave me a check ride I always used it as a learning experiance as I never seemed to know what they asked.... Have fun it is a great job and you have the best seat in the plane not to mention that you also have control of the heat and air cond temp. Fly safe and keep your eye on them co-pilots. Muff
  12. I was the OIC of an ALCE det at Utapao in 1981 The 834ALD would not approve a taxi start. I think maybe you mean 1971....not much going on at Utapo during 1981 and 834th was long gone. I used an ascetlyne(sp) torch one time at Elmondorf on a starter that was wrapped around a mount bolt. I also still have my starter nut wrench that I have had since 1963 0r 64. Muff
  13. How about the "kobi beef" (bufflo) sandwiches at Udorn? Muff
  14. Mine is still on my key ring thst I use all the time. Still good for dirty fiinger nails. Dang at Don Moung did make the best ham and cheese with crispy lettice. On out and backs to there from TSN we always had orders from folks and we would bring back bags full of ham andcheese sandwiches. Also when Don Moung operation shut down Dang and her shed were carried to Utapo on a C-130.Troop moral mission. Muff
  15. On another trip to Incerlik...Spring 1970....we landed, off loaded, and I was refueling the plane...in about 5 minutes the refuel guy stops his rig and ask me to disconnecrt the hose. I tell him I'm not done refueling yet...he tells me he has priorty refuel and has to go...I look around...not another plane on the ramp anywhere...I ask what needs refueling....he says that there is a C-141 inbound....I look out at the approach end...nothing insight. He un hooks and leaves. We sit there waiting about 20 minutes later the 141 lands and taxis in....over an hour later we get our fuel....hell we could have finished and been at the bar long before the 141 landed but MAC had prioroty...sucks. Muff OBTW...I did a three year tour at Mother MAC as an SMSgt...Logistics training...job could have (should have) been done by a 2 or 3 striper...but no this is hqds and we have to have rank maning our positions...job sucked!!!
  16. On a rote to Rhien Main we went down to Turkey for a RON...got to billiting and they said no rooms available...well this was our second trip to Incerlik and were not pleased with the off base conditions or hotel on last trip ...so the AC insisted that we be given rooms on base...the Turk behind the desk said no have! On the key board behind the desk were several rooms with keys just hanging there...AC asked what about those rooms? Desk guy says oh those are in case a MAC crew comes in...are they reserved asks the AC....no just in case...AC picks up the phone ask operator to connect to Base Commander....we got the rooms on base. This was in Spring of 1970. Muff
  17. Ken looks like Cam Ranh Bay?...I need a new slide copier...what did you buy and where can I get one. Thanks. Muff
  18. No words will ever be adequate...our thoughts and prayers are with you. Muff
  19. Casey, thanks for posting that. I was humbled and honored that they picked me out of thousands who probably had more significant careers than me. I'm proud to have served. Muff
  20. This airplane has a great history and should be in an air park with a discription of its history. It was the plane that on the last day of the VN war was motared at Delat Cam Ly and received major damage but was flown out to NKP on three engines and loss of utility hyd system, then used as a gray bird in the late 70s. It is now at LRAFB school and about a year age suffered an inflight roll back of all four engines...due to the high skill and knowledge of the crew the plane was safely recovered and landed back at LR. The C-130 has shown a great deal of empathy for the crews and has saved many crew lives in its ability to continue to fly with severe problems. Muff

    Idiots

Try to go into one of the "sub class" quickey stores like chain donut shop and ask the price of donutes...they might say 6 fot $4.00 you say "ok give me a half dozen" and watch their expression. Or better yet try paying with $2.00 dollar bills...that really freaks them out. Muff
