  1. If memory serves there was an AC that was shot down in Desert Storm. Not really on topic, but close. Wasn't there one that was shot down in South America in the 90's? Or did it just take some rounds?
  2. I wonder, were any of these guys former -130 crew?
  3. I brought in an MRT team to fix a C-17 that clipped a tree. I think that was in 05. I managed to get photos of the boneyard there. I'd have to do some digging to find them though.
  4. Better that way than splattered across the landscape. She did her job exceptionally well. Nobody got hurt. Can't ask for much more than that out of her.
  5. I think we got up to 34K once. It was coming back to the Deid from northern Iraq. The copilot was new, but eager to learn. The AC recognized the talent and instead of talking about high altitude flight, decided to demo it. That airplane popped and pinged as we went up and the airframe got colder. I wasn't sure it would be ok. But it was. The heater couldn't keep up and we all ended up on the flight deck.
  6. http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Air/Lockheed-Martin-WC-130J/1286192/L/ Sorry, I couldn't work out the image posting thing. I noticed the Hurricane Hunters J-models have square windows in the side escape hatches. Perhaps that would be an economical fix to the side spotter window issue.
  7. DFAC is an Army term. I was counciled that an Air Force Chow Hall is called "Aerospace Dining Facility."
  8. There was a half decent BBQ Chow Hall at Bagram. I heard they plowed it under in favor of more B-huts... The best chow hall I can recall was at K-2. Nice breakfast sandwiches, BBQ night (made using charcoal), steak and lobster night. Although I'd skip the lobster. Seafood several thousand miles from an ocean made me a bit leary....
  9. That's such a shame. Wish they'd come up with the AC-130J idea before they did that. I miss the newer H2 slicks.
  10. 1396 was the one in the flood? As I recall it's got a flood marking near the left paratroop door.
  11. It seems that this interview was done out of frustration. However, he should have known that Rolling Stone wasn't really going to take his side in the situation.
  12. Speaking of which... I hear Harrisburgs mission is going away? Anyone heard anything about it? Will they convert their J's to something else?
  13. I came across 97-1351 today in Charlotte. She still has a Baltimore tail flash.
  14. 90-1057 has MC-130H on the crew door placard. It's a slick H2.
  15. http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20100604-0 Spot on. That airfield tests the sphincter factor. Photos here- http://www.flyafrica.info/forums/showthread.php?p=208424#post208424
  16. I remember from flying Cessnas and Pipers in my earlier days that they would have compass cards. The compass will show different deviations on different headings because of the metal in the airplane and it's relative position to the compass needle. I imagine it'd be the same in the Herk, but don't recall seeing a compass card. I remember going out with a mechanic and filling out the compass card on the little Grumman I used to fly.
  17. That one! Ok. I've got my tail numbers mixed up. I think that report also shows 4 H2s from Nashville going to Alaska. Is this correct?
  18. As in it's assigned there or is it maintenance related? I've got a bunch of time in her.
  19. Bob- We've got a guy going through Dobbins training right now and just got another one back from school there. I think they keep getting stays of execution on the training squadron.
  20. The Guard still is doing what it was. Mostly instructor schools. They will also be responsible for being the AMP schoolhouse. I wonder if the 62nd is going or went away? My thoughts are towards Nashville and Dobbins being the most qualified candidates for filling the void.
  21. I thought PR got a stay of execution as well. The premise behind this is that they want to temporarily set up an H2 model schoolhouse with Guard/Reserve folks. Five year "borrow" they call it. I've already informed my representation of my thoughts on this idea....
  22. Yeah. But admit it- you liked it! It was worth it.
  23. I heard that the Roman nosed airplanes with the 3-bladed props were the fastest Herks until the J-model. Is this correct?
  24. Haha. Actually, if it's who I think it is, yep. He's an academy guy....
  25. 72-1288 was the first to have dual snubbers. I believe the purpose of the second snubber was to force the door down, not to lock or pressurize it.
