http://obits.al.com/obituaries/mobile/obituary.aspx?n=william-coleman&pid=151336043 Thanks to Tom Stalvey, we just learned that Col. Bill Coleman, who was F-Troop commander and then DCO of the 463rd wing at Clark passed away in May and is to be buried at Arlington on September 30 at 0900. Col. Coleman came to Clark out of SAC at Barksdale and commanded the 29th until the spring of 1969 when he made full colonel and went to wing as DCO. He was AC on an airplane that was shot up over A Loi during the first day of drops just before Maj. Bucher's crew was shot down. Stalvey was his loadmaster and Al Clime was his engineer that day. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/fayettevilleobserver/obituary.aspx?n=william-h-baush&pid=154258188 - I got a call over the weekend from Bill Collier, to tell me that flight engineer Bill Baush passed away last week. Bill was a veteran C-130 flight engineer, who was at Ashiya on A-models. He was in Stan/Eval with the 463rd at Langley and Mactan (maybe Sewart before that.) He was chief engineer for PACAF when he retired. Bill is mentioned several times in my C-130 book. Bill also told me that he had gone to Roanoke, Virginia to visit Jim Radford, an engineer at Pope and Clark. Jim retired to his home in Christiansburg, Virginia and made a fortune in real estate, but…

I forgot to make a post on here when Charlie West passed away a few weeks ago. He was one of the old-timers at Pope, going back to the C-123 days when he was part of MULE TRAIN. He was a North Carolina native and had retired in Fayetteville.

Early last Saturday morning Kevin Gaffney passed away at West Cobb Hospital in Austell, Georgia. After retirement he became a C-130 flight engineer simulator instructor at Dobbins ARB and settled in this area. Nearly 10 years ago he was diagnosed with cancer and has fought that battle ever since. In one of his last emails he said he had a GOD given talent for tenacity. Everyone around him knew how true that statement was, as I have never known anyone as determined and strong willed as Kevin in his long battle against this terrible desease. He will be surely missed.

The past 24 hours have been shocking to me. Yesterday was Mike Lyon's birthday and I made a birthday wish on his Facebook page. A few minutes later I got a message from Ken Smith that he had passed away recently. I found his obit online. Mike lived in Lake City, FL. I had talked to him just a few months ago. He was an engineer in the 29th at Clark when I was there. Then today I got a call from Ralph Bemis that he had heard that Chris Gray had passed away, but wasn't sure if it was a rumor or true. I went online and found his obituary - http://www.stephensondearman.com/services.asp?page=odetail&id=616&locID=1. Chris was my roommate at Charleston when I got there fr…

Guys, we had a major discussion on the subject of "reunions" at the TCTAA convention a couple of weeks ago and the general consensus is that there are too many and it costs too much to try to attend all of those a person is eligible for. It costs at least $1,000 just for transportation and lodging for each event. It makes a lot more sense to have one national event somewhere each year or so for anyone who was involved in the troop carrier/tactical airlift missions. Granted, those units that are already having them are going to continue but the numbers at the various events are dwindling. The Sewart Association isn't going to have any more and there are other groups that a…

I was talking with an Honor Flight rep the other day at a gun show. He said the hardest part of getting every WWII vet back to Washington DC to see the memorial, was hunting them down. Due to privacy reg's, nobody can actually give out WWII veterans' names to Honor Flight. If you know any WWII vets who would like to have an all expenses paid trip to DC, pls send theri names to www.honorflight.org. They & the remaining WWII vets, need our help. Thnx

Hi, folks, Now that I've retired from the Air Guard, I'm devoting my time to writing military-related novels. Just thought I'd let you know about my latest, titled THE WARRIORS. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly calls THE WARRIORS "a terrific addition to what has become an exemplary series." Most of the action in this novel takes place in present-day Bosnia and Serbia, with flashbacks to the Bosnian war in the 1990s. Some of it will sound familiar to those of you who flew the Joint Guard and Joint Forge missions back then. Here's a link to the Amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/The-Warriors-Tom-Young/dp/0399158472 You can find more info on this book and …

Hello all, Since joining earlier this year, I have made visits to the forums a part of my daily routine and contributed when I could. There is a lot of knowledge in this community and I learn something new every time I visit. For the past few months, I have been working on a few projects for my employer (Elite Electronic Engineering, Inc.) that I think will be very beneficial to the C-130 community. Specifically, I've been developing a Windows-based TOLD calculator and a TOLD training course for C-130J pilots. The initial offerings are specific to the C-130J, but I plan to develop similar offerings for the C-130E/H community in the future. Please visit our websit…
