joemontyb
We have tried everything. What will cause a nose wheel shimmy?

Steve1300
http://herkybirds.com/herkapedia/index.php?title=Lockheed_Service_News Look at Volume 12, number 4. It has troubleshooting steps for fixing a NLG shimmy problem. As it will state, shimmies are the result of more than one cause. Something must initiate it and something must permit it to happen. Since the hydraulic system has a shimmy damper in it, then fixing only one thing does not actually fix the whole problem.
ENRGZR
is it on taxi or take off? If on take off, is Nose wheel armor installed? We had one that the armor was sagging on one side and gave a shimmy. didn't really think to look at first because the armor was already tore up from the wheels. trev130eng
I've had a similar problem with severe nosewheel shimmy that we could not cure. The problem was eventually traced to worn keyways in the NLG underneath the steering collar that lock the steering collar bracket.
joemontyb
This is a list of components we have changed. Nose Strut Tires 4 sets NWS actuator Checked rig on nws cables Trunnion bearing Main wheel bearings Steering Control Valve I think the Steering Control Valve fixed it. I will post the results when I know it"s a good fix. Thank you for the help.
Ronc
Not long ago (within the last 6 months) we had a high speed nose wheel shimmy that turned out to be a an issue with the right main landing gear tire, just a thought
Old Talon 1 F/E
Check the rigging on the NLG doors. If the front NLG door had been dropped recently and not reconnected EXACTLY the way it was disconnected then the doors are probably out of rig. The shimmy may be the Aft NLG door moving from side to side at high speeds prior to Take Off.
Skip Davenport
I know a lot of OLD TALON1/FE's which one are you?
redhawk130
Many things I have experienced have already been noted. On My A Model airtankers, sitting static at near gross weight would create flat spots on the tires which would cause shimmy, steering rig and nose doors were primaries
bobdaley
Which A model tankers were you flying? Bob
joemontyb
well it think we have a good fix. My bird just got back from a road trip and no nose wheel shimmy. It was the Steering Control Valve.

hydro101
Well sorry to say but the stearing control valve will just hide your problem. It will come back in do time. Have fun with the repeat and recur. I would have started with mabe hummmmmmm bearings or nose tires or just tightend it up and let it go. I love you
PACAF
Future info if your problem reoccurs. Don't use the same torque wrench to tighten the wheel bearings as you did the last time. We had a nose wheel shimmy problem and found it to be the torque wrench calibration was way off and the bearings were not torqued and caused the shimmy at high speeds. Just a thought.
