  1. If a herk catches fire on the flight line and there are planes on both sides of it, why do you tow the planes on each side instead of the plane on fire? Answer, The man riding breaks might be overcome by smoke.
  2. I was gonna guess CRB, but I never saw the place like that. I don't remember seeing the place in the daytime. It was still a PSP runway the last time I was there. I have been told I was confusing it with another place where a Herk hit a hole in the PSP and tore the nose gear out on take off roll, and the Army tried to move it off the runway with a cable through the cockpit windows.
  3. I don't remember the lizards but I do remember to check my boots before I put them on.
  4. Anyone at Ubon remember during noon mess that someone would seem to find crushed glass in the ice machine. Seems like it happened almost every day that I was there. I would still drink the ice tea but strain it through my teeth.

    Vietnam Vets.

    We mostly called the Chow Hall a Mess Hall. That was one of the nicer things we called it. When we went to the Latrine we always said to flush twice, it's a long way to the mess hall.
  6. Even the "A,s" had the flt deck hook up and walk around bottles back in my days. Nothing in the cargo compartment. Thanks for the replies guys.
  7. Do these newer Herks now carry Oxygen for the passengers? If so where? Are they like regular passenger planes and have a mask at each seat?
  8. I always pulled out the "Sextant Case" and sat as far forward as I could. I plugged my headset into the short cord next to the FE. I didn't go on any Bat missions though.

    Vietnam Vets.

    I hadn't heard of VietNam when I joined in Feb 63 and until an alert in Aug 64 was the first time I heard that word used. My chance to go to Clark was Oct64 till Jan 65. I was a 3 rd wiper. I still got to do a lot of flying and got shot at thinking it was camp fires that I saw flashing through the tree limbs. The pilot told me we were over some sea and those flashes were people on boats shooting at us. I got to go back to Naha in June 65 for 17 more months doing the same thing as I was doing at Clark. When I got out in Dec 66 I would watch the weather and some local news and turn the TV off when the war news came on. As for spelling I am one of the worst and someone rudely tried to scold me and then erased their post. I left mine up but it got deleted. I enjoy this forum and can deal with the memories it brings back. I even went and got registered with the VA so I can use their medical facilities, if need be. I have met some old friends on here but CRS has almost taken over. Thanks to all that have made these forums what they are. Don Myers Thanks to all the Vets and other Military personell for what you have done and are now doing.

  12. Congrats Muff. My first visit to VietNam was in 64 also. The 314th was TDY to Clark.

    Tiny, Did there used to be a Rockwell Acft Plant in Valdosta that made Rockwell Crop Dusting planes in 1970?
  15. Why am I thinking 2800psi for the A,s? CRS aint it wonderful. I can say anything and if its rong, blame it on CRS.

    Do you remember the riots of Orange burg and Charleston in about 67, or 68? They called some of the upstate National Guard Units.
  18. I heard about that back in the early 70,s. I only had the money to tinker with CB radios but I learned to make some killer antennas. I used old tube type radios back then. I co-phased 2 antennas made of .o32 safety wire that would out talk anything I had ever heard of back then. Each had 204" of wire on them and hooked up to a 25 watt 10 channel black-face Johnson tube type radio. I could switch the transmit and receive crystals around and get on a frequency lower than the CB. The problem was getting someone to talk to me. It was illegal for the Ham operators to talk to me but every now and then some of them would. I think I still got 2 of them radios packed back in boxes somewhere. All one of them needs is a modulation tube. It put out 25 watts last time I used it.

  20. None of the "A,s" I worked on had the bunks and for a "Galley" we had 2 Thermos Jugs on top of the electrical panel next to the ladder to the escspe hatch. We used the hand held signal light to heat food if we wanted it hot. After hearing of all the luxeries on the newer models I am surprized we didn't have to have a line of CC,s to hand pull the props to start the engines. We did have to windmill when we were in country and a starter broke so we could leave. I still don't know where the FE kept the starter plates and Generator plates.
  21. Most likely I was about the same size as you back then. We worked hard and we partied even harder.
  22. What year did they start with the bed in the flight deck? On the "A",s all we had was a streacher behind the 245 when I got out in Nov 66. I was at Don Maung a couple of months right before I got out and we worked on any 130 that stopped there on the Bangkok Shuttle and I didn't see any bunks there either.

  25. Thanks DonR but that isn't the plane. These were twin engine. They were shaped like the one in your picture. They had Zantop painted on the side. They would land and go to a place in front of the hanger and stay only a few minutes then taxi back out and take off. I never got real close to one of them. The first ones that landed there had recip engines, then the same planes started comeing in with turboprop engines. I remember we all were surprised when that happened. Half of this stuff I could be dreaming about as I do have CRS. Thanks for the help. Donwon.
