RVN Dirt Field! 1 2

I am trying to remember/find the name of a dirt field in Vietnam that was "kinda" hairy to get into! You landed on an upslope and from the unloading area on the opposing end a C-130 would go out of sight and then come over the ridge in full reverse! You landed one direction (on the uphill slope) and took off the other direction. Anybody remember the name?!! Thanks, Clod

While looking at the list of missing pics of Bob Daley's gallerys, I can't remember the fate of 56-0477 c/n [cn]3085[/cn]. I am having a hard time believing that I don't remember it or what happened to it especially since I was involved in Blind Bats etc. during the time it was lost. Was it a Naha bird or was it from Tachikawa? I'm assuming Naha, and thats why I can't figure out why I don't remember it! If any of you have the complete story on it, I would like to hear it. Thanks, Ken

Four Horsemen 1 2

Hi folks! As a C-130 pilot for the Royal Netherlands Air Force I have started researching the great heritage of this amazing airplane. I have managed to collect most books ever written on the C-130 and I\'m looking into the lesser known corners of the C-130 past (e.g. the Credible Sport project). One of the things that caught my interest is the existence of the \"Four Horsemen\" demonstration team. While doing the obligatory \"google\" research I found out that video/footage of the Four Horsemen exists. Can anyone of you confirm the existence of this footage and is there any way to get a copy of it? Or can someone at least point me in the correct direction? Thank…

Here is an article that was posted in the AFA news..... Brings back a lot of memories....good to see that the old bird is still flying... Muff Khe Sanh Veteran Back in Combat: The 746th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, which has been supporting operations in Southwest Asia since February, recently added one more C-130 to its ranks: a 45-year-old C-130E known as Patches that arrived from Pope AFB, N.C. The aircraft, tail no. 62-1817, has a famous past that goes back to the 77-day battle of Khe Sanh in early 1968 during the Vietnam War. With overland supply of the embattled Marines impossible, Patches and her crew braved enemy fire to land and deliver much-needed suppli…

Khaki is a Hindu word meaning “dust colored.†Uniforms of dust-colored drill are said to have been first worn by British and native troops in India in 1848. Today, September 3, 1949) any drab or green-gray uniform is called khaki. In America, khaki is no longer associated with color. Khaki is pronounced: KACK-ee, to rhyme with wacky. C-130A 50041 c/n [cn]3068[/cn] visited one of the Royal Air Force bases in Singapore, RAF Changi (now Singapore Airport) in January 1963. It was accompanying a US Navy WV-2Q 135749 which at the time was carrying a tailcode of 'KR2'. This 'Willie Victor' was later shot down whilst serving with VQ-1 in 1969 by North Korean Mig-17's as it was carrying out a patrol along the North Korean coast. The 31 crew all perished. The C-130A 50041 at the time looked like a C-130B-II version, although I see your records still show it as a standard C-130A. It had Hamilton Standard 4 bladed props, the extra large underwing tanks (ECM pods) and had a radio aerial from mid-fuselage to tail.…

I threw this out a few years ago, and it's one of my favorites: This is for the young buck's out there to keep the story living. A C-130 load get's into an altercation with a jump master.......heated exchanges, and the load gets a sick-sack plowed into his face right before the jump master exits the Herk. The result....the load is pissed and JUMPS AFTER HIM! From what the O-Club stories say, the Load is really into a whacko fit on the DZ and a lot of paratroopers are bewildered. Does anyone remember this incident? Kurt

A-models and early B-models had a cargo door of the left side just aft of the crew entry door. From what I have read, there were problems with them coming open inflight and causing several crashes and were sealed up. Does anyone have any pictures of them opened up?

Our Ops Group Commader is requesting information on one of our old airplanes, 62-1788. I was hoping some of you may be able to help out. The active duty here at LR is taking the airplane to the boneyard next week. Apparently they have a reporter who will be flying with the crew to Davis Monthan to witness the airplane be delivered to the boneyard. This reporter is looking for historical info on the airplane for the article. Since we had the airplane for over 20 years, the active duty has referred this reporter to us for the information. We do not have any historical info on this tail so I am appealing to you all for help.

I was thinking about old times again the other day, and started wondering why I don't see any posts by guys from Tachikawa!! I used to hang around with some of them when we would meet up at CRB. This is when I was on A Models from Naha 1967-1969. At the time the C-130 inputs were A Models from Tachi and Naha, and B Models from PI. I don't remember if the Tachi birds left CRB before I left Naha or not! I do know that they and the Naha A Models were not at CRB when I started going back to there from CCK in April 69. I guess I am probably confusing people with my dumb questions, but I guess the real question is ---are there any Tachi troops here??? Thanks, Ken

As long as I have been a member of this forum, I don't remember any mention of the war in Bosnia. My question is, did any C-130's take part in the conflict? If so, I think it would be very interesting to hear some of your stories about what part you guys played. Also, if any of you have any pictures of your trips in and out and especially any base or off-base pictures would be great!! Also, was there any medal or commendation made for your participation? I would find it hard to believe that the mighty Herk wasn't involved! I remember watching the news when it looked like the first plane into Baghdad was a C-130!!! Thanks in advance for your input and pictures, …

"Note to self: 5' tail-to-nose clearance is too much. If you really need a buddy start to work on the first try, pull in tight so the nose of your airplane is 5' UNDER the tail." For the rest see http://http://vietnamairlift.com/windmilltaxi.html Alan

Ok old timers I need an answer on this. When the C-130A aircraft arrived at Evreux AB, FR, were they assigned to the 317th TCW or the 322nd AD. When I got there all of the aircraft forms said 317th Cams. While I was there (1962-1964) I heard that the aircraft had been assigned to the 317th TCW prior to the 322nd AD. Is this true or not? Thanks in advance.

I came across this article the other day from the May 2013 edition of Combat Aircraft magazine. It is part 1 of 2 on the C-130J program. Lots of good info on the development program and all the upgrades since then. http://www.scribd.com/doc/142174301/Kaminsi-T-May-2013-Super-Hercules-Part-One-C-130J-Development-and-USAF-Service-Combat-Aircraft-Vol-14-No-5

My understanding that the USAF and VNAF left behind some A models at TSN. My understanding is that some were deliberately destroyed and some left in a derelict condition. Does any one have a list of the ones left and the fate of the rest now gone. Thanks Col

I was stationed at Ft. Eustis VA in Spring of 1971. I was on a C-130 at Patrick Henry airport and it had been spraying Agent Orange. Anybody have any way to find out information about tail numbers and other information about these planes? Any help would be appreciated. You can either post a reply here or send an email to me at docbarnhill<at>yahoo.com Thanks ahead of time, Doc Barnhill

As many of you know who follow this site, my mind wanders around all over the place. This item came up.....When did the designation for airlift squadron change?? Meaning when did they go from TCS ( troop carrier squadron) to TAS ( tactical airlift squadron) and now AS (Airlift squadron)? Were the TCS's not under TAC before?? Did the MAC squadrons and wings change ( I think when I was in, they were MAS, MAW) when MATS ( Military Air transport Service, or as one of my best instructors always called it, Might arrive tomorrow sometime) became MAC. Just another historical tidbit that my feeble mind brought up, probably in a vain attempt to bring back old memories. I'll tak…
