A YouTube video was recently posted of an Iranian Ilyushin IL-76MD crash as seen from a C-130 cargo bay at an air show. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504784_162-20069007-10391705.html

I watched it on the National Geographics channel last night. I was hopeing they would show more of the planes, specially the C-130,s. They did for an instant flash a couple that had burned out. I left there in Nov. of 66 after a 17 month tour at Naha and where ever else they sent me. I went to Ubon for supposidely 60 days and had to sign a waver that I wouldn\'t take the 30 days off of my tour. When I got there they put me on swing shift tracking down specialest when the planes were about to abort the evening missions. I think I actually stayed there about 7 days and went back to Naha. And yes they did give me that 30 days on my early out, and I didn\'t complain o…

OK all you old timers (loads and chiefs), here\'s an odd question for you. Does anyone remember that horrible disinfectant that they gave us when we rotated back to CCK from in country? It was used to clean out the cargo compartment from the stench of transporting KIAs and WIAs.As I recall, it came in a 5 or 6 gallon bucket and I used a broom to swish it around to disinfect and deodorize the aircraft, and it was horrible. Took your breath away and brought tears to your eyes. I\'d like to know if any one remembers that stuff and maybe even some kind of name or other information...thanks guy\'s. Chris

Some of the older members may appreciate this if they have not already seen it. First click on a state. When it opens, scroll down to the city and the names will appear. Then click on their names. It should show you a picture of the person or at least their bio and medals. This really is an amazing web site. Someone spent a lot of time and effort to create it. I hope that everyone who receives this appreciates what those who served in VIetnam sacarificed for our country. The link below is a virtual wall of all those lost during the Vietnam war with the names, bio's and other information on our lost heroes. Those who remember that timeframe, or perhap lost fri…

This may have been THE most popular song during the Vietnam War. There are a number of C-130s shown in the video. Somma y\'all may recognize some of the tail numbers and locations. I know it wasn\'t filmed at Katum (aka: ka-BOOM!!!) \'cause we din\'t have mountains around us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWZ-JBbQJIc&feature=related

Many, many, years ago (1966) in a land far, far away (Republic of South Vietnam) there was a C-130 squadron named the 776th. One day in that year of 1966 one of those fine C-130s blew both left main gear tires on a lovely old PSP runway belonging to some fine U.S. Marines located in a little valley long since forgotten. That day there was a lot of discussion as to what to do with that poor 'lil ol' Herky bird stranded in the middle of that runway. Some thought it wise to bulldoze it off to the side and be done with it. Eventually, cooler heads prevailed and another C-130 complete with two aircraft repair types was flown in (a very hairy landing indeed!) and repairs were a…

I received the message below via the Contact US e-mail account. Do any of you remember Ben Sager? Please help if you can. Casey Hi! My name is Becky Sager and I'm desperately searching for folks who served with my husband in the Air Force during Vietnam. He is ill and has undergone many surgeries and is trying to get compensation from the VA, but they say his records don't show his actual service while he was in Vietnam. The VFW and other organizations suggested we search for people who served with him. He was in the Air Force and was in the 21 TAS, Naha AB, Okinawa (PACAF) during July 1, 1967 thru May 3, 1968 and was assigned to the ground crew on Aircraft (C…

Looking to connect with any vets that may have served on c-130's, 1968-69 in Vietnam ?(Da Nang & Cam Rahn Bay air bases) Also, any vets that served on c-130's, 1970-1975 in the Phillipines? Doing some research into time specific C-130's for a painting. Thanks!

To all you who served in the Vietnam War and the era for that matter, yesterday I was in the parade marking the 25th anniversary of the wall. I know that there are thousands out there who flew the missions, repaired our birds so we could fly, fueled them up, operated the control towers and navcom equipment, rigged up the airdrop loads, cooked food for us,made sure our mail and our pay was taken care of, walked the airfield perimeters with your dogs to protect our planes, cared for us when we were sick, and, Yes, when sometimes we got hurt, crewed the crash rigs and the rescue chooppers, and every other activity that was needed to keep us flying. For all of you, still her…

From today's AFA Daily Report eNewsletter: Members of Det. 1 of the 314th Troop Carrier Wing received the Presidential Unit Citation for their service during the Vietnam War during an Oct. 9 ceremony at Hurlburt Field, Fla. Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz presented them with the high honor, which recognizes extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. These former special operations airmen flew MC-130E Talons in support of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group from 1966 to 1968 on missions such as transport, air rescue, and leaflet drops over enemy territory. Although the MACVSOG and its supporting units received the cita…

A friend of mine just posted a virtual flight he did with a C-130 on YouTube. I have this same model I use in Microsoft Flight Simulator and I have to tell you it is pretty realistic - to the point if you don't follow the checklist you can't get the thing started. Fuel, hydraulics, electrical systems all work like the real thing. For those not familiar VATSIM is a system of worldwide servers where you can log in and file a flight plan and then contact ATC (real humans) who will provide instructions just like int he real world. As computers get to the point of handling more the software seems to keep up. My last real world flight was back in 1985 with th…

Hello I have been trying to work out the visual differences between the transport/airlifter variants of the different C-130H models and earlier variants. For example how can I person identify a C-130H from a C-130G or C-130B or C-130E etc? Are their differences in shape of cabin window or engine nacelles or different escape doors etc. I have been looking at this on and off over the past 3 weeks. As of yet I have not really been able to identify any significant differences. Of course my eyes are not great. Well thanks for taking the time to read this and all the best.

VMGR234 at JRB Ft Worth has traded in all their KC-130T's. Three were sold as I understand, 162786 and 163022 to the PI, and 162785 to Argentina. The rest scattered about to the USN and USMCR. VMGR234 had received, last I heard, 5 J's and were supposed to get 7 more. 165739, 166473, 167111, 168073 and 169018 were there. New question, recently seen at Lockgreed KC-130T 169225. I had heard it was for 234 QH but instead it is painted BH? Anyone, maybe NATOPS, know the real story? Thanks Bob
