As a retired FE (military & commercial), I have a lot of time on my hands & am easily amused. One of my daily rituals is to come visit this forum. The last thing I do before signing off is to check any new member's profile. If I'm the first there, I feel I've accomplished something for that day. For those of you who don't check members' profiles, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. For those of you that do (Larry, Sonny, Mt crewchief, etc), you know exactly what I'm talking about, right? Don R.

I was just thinking about the remaining AD herk squadrons. Just a shell of what we have had. Yokota (1), Dyess (2), Little Rock (2) I consider the 62 as an RTU, but is AD, Elmendorf (1), and Ramstein (1). Not including Special Ops. 7 Worldwide. Downsizing and so forth. What a shame.

From the AFA news: The Air Force has awarded L-3 Communications a $61 million contract to add a weapons package to eight MC-130W Combat Spear special-mission aircraft to give them a gunship-like attack capability. Under the terms of the deal, L-3 will provide the weapons kits, which are called "precision strike packages," for installation on the aircraft at Warner Robins Air Logistics Center in Georgia. MC-130Ws fitted with the weapons will be known as Dragon Spears. Air Force Special Operations Command is arming these aircraft to relieve the relentless operational demands on its regular AC-130 gunships until new AC-130Js enter the fleet.

A little backstory first. I am a single 19 year old loadmaster currently assigned to C-130J's out of Ramstein, Germany. I will be heading there in a month or so once I finish up training. The problem is I just got offered to fly on the MC-130J.. Out of Cannon AFB, New Mexico. Being on the MC-130 has always been my dream but it's just hard to give up Germany for NM. I need input from both the C and MC guys. And advice would be much appreciated! I'm really torn on this one. Thank you!

I got the following from a pilot friend of mine. Although it's written from a commercial aviation point of view, most of the observations could apply to the military PIC, too. Don R. BEST CAPTAIN-ING ADVICE Go ugly early; Never turn down a motel room from the company; Never answer your phone on Christmas; Always tip your van driver; Always buy the first round at the bar during a layover; New hires never pay for a meal when you are around; Weather is always better avoided than penetrated; Speaking of penetrated, if you want to retire with any money, keep wife #1; Speaking of weather -- don't ever push it. Five years from now nobody will rem…

I just got done with the new AF times and they had an article stating where the USAF beddown of future airframes would be. I see Mansfield on the list as a JCA base. What happened to the BRAC on Mansfield. BRAC stated Mansfield would close, no future mission, no aircraft change, no guard base. Now they show up as a JCA unit? What gives? I am not bagging on the folks there, I have enjoyed working with them over the years and thought it was another huge mistake by the BRAC to shut \'em down. What happend to make the change and how did Ohio do it? Herkeng Retired in Texas

As Skip Davenport has said, "I was in special op's, before special op's was cool!" My sentiments exactly. I was told that my career would be ruined when I went into special operations, and.........really didn't care. It was where I wanted to be, because I was "invited" to come aboard. I have never, nor will I ever regret the experience! Big Blue wants AFSOC to be a command like every other command, and I see great dismay with this outlook; and what is to come. In my humble opinion, AFSOC crews should "pay their dues" and gain experience before APPLYING for an AFSOC assignment. For example: Fixed Wing= 1,500 hrs. in C130 variants. Rotary Wing= 1,000 hrs. Flt. Eng.…

Just got a phone call from Bob Flowers, a retired 123 and C5 loadie. Bob is about 70 and has many ailments associated with AO. I took him to the VA in Sept. of 2011 to get him signed up. He just got word that he's 100%, and it's retroactive to Sept. 2011. He's floored! It's a good day. Pat

The Air Force has proposed killing the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP), aiming to replace it with a less expensive alternative, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz told reporters Tuesday at the Air Force Association’s Air & Space Conference. Calling the decision “largely an affordability issue,†Schwartz said service brass have pitched the idea to the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Under that pitch, the AMP effort would be replaced with one that would fit airlifters with “stand-alone integrations†as opposed to the planned across-the-board avionics upgrades. Boeing had been the contractor the AMP program but was expected to comp…

From the Air Force Times: The performance of the Air Force’s new C-130J in intra-theater lift in places like Afghanistan is so remarkable that the service may replace the engines of its older-model Hercules aircraft to increase their fuel efficiency, the service’s second highest ranking uniformed leader said Wednesday. “Throughout the single-command area of operations, we have prioritized the use of newer, more efficient C-130Js for intra-theater airlift over older, less efficient C-130 models,†said Gen. Philip Breedlove, Air Force vice chief, at the U.S. Army & U.S. Air Force Energy Forum in Arlington, Va. “In fact, this difference is significant enou…

U.S. Air Forces in Europe Public Affairs 3/27/2009 - RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (AFNS) -- American and Polish airmen delivered the first of five refurbished C-130E Hercules military transport planes and spare parts March 24 to the Polish air force at Powidz Air Base, Poland. "It's a great day for them to celebrate the arrival of the Hercules. It's vital to them being able to -- own their own -- organically pick up and go," said Air Force Maj. Gen. William A. Chambers, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe director of air and space operations. "They're one of our allies who are very willing to go," he said. "Whether it is Afghanistan or Iraq, they've been alongside the…

The link below takes you to an article on the MN Reserves. There is also a pretty good video on the right side once you get through the advertising........... It brings in nearly 60 million dollars into the local economy, employs more than 1300 people and that\'s just the beginning. You can find the Air Force Reservists stationed at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, and these days reserve is an understatement. \"It is a little bit slower than most of the other airplanes,\" said Captain Chris Rieland about the C-130 airplane he pilots. Would like to hear from other members on their dealings with the AF Suggestion Program. In my 21 year career I submitted 2 suggestions, both very, very simple suggestions for the herk, both were disapproved, years later I found that my suggestions were now on other aircraft in other units. First one was on installing 1/4" x1/4" hardware cloth and a hose clamp over the exhaust port of the AWADS cooling fan on the aft side of FS 245 right side. (see thread "sleeping on a herk" post #32) Disapproved , said that the cooling fan exhaust could be rotated 90 degrees, discharging the exhaust into the bulkhead instead of straight down. I submitted this at Rhein-Main. 2 …

This may have been discussed before on this board but I searched and did not find any information. I am looking for the Qualifications or guide lines used to award The Air Medal during the Vietnam War. After a recent move my Flight Logs re surfaced. I was never issued any Air Medals while active in the USAF. I can now document the number of Combat missions flown while in the 345th. I am missing my last month of flights in my record. I know I flew 8 leaflet drops in my last in country shuttle. ( Crew Scheduler didn't like me). These are not in my record. But I can document 134 combat missions. Since my retirement I have become active in Veterans groups and my own activitie…
