I am writing a story on the MC-130P and H for a popular aviation magazine and I need some help. The MC-130P is a conversion of the HC-130. I wonder if the two HC-130s used in the Son Tay raid were converted to MC-130P and if they are still flying. If I have the tail numbers of those two planes it is easy to find out. Can anybody help me with the tail numbers?

THE OLD CONFEDERATE’S STORY We had all grown weary listening, To the stories of war and death. When the old Confederate rested A moment to catch his breath. And one disgusted listener, In rather sarcastic tone, Said: “Now, see here, old soldier, As we’re all of us alone; Come, tell us, about how many Of the Yanks did you ever kill?†The Old Confederate answered, “It’s a ticklish question. Still, I don’t mind tellin’ it private, An’ in confidence jest to you; I’ve been figgerin’ ‘em up here lately, An’, infact, I’ve just got through. It’s a strange coincidence, very, “Bout the strangest …

Hello all, been a while since I was on. But I was looking at an issue of Airforces Monthly magazine from I think june / july 2010 issue, and there was an article about Boeing receiving a contract to bring the F-16's out of storage and convert them to target drones. Anywho, there was a pic of two 16's sitting there in the boneyard, with a 130 in the background with tailcode, YJ, and it looked like it was 7803. Now I thought the acft was sold to Tunisia. Anyone have any info?

The Project CHECO "SEA Glossary" lists Commando Scarf as a "C-130 munitions drop in Cambodia (Special Mission)" Anyone know anything about this? FYI: Most, if not all the Project CHECO reports and most of the USAF History Office books on Vietnam can be downloaded (FREE!) from the DTIC website (http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/search/tr/tr.html) dave

Pineapple!!! While at CCK one of the most pain in the ass things I remember was doing something on top of the airplane and seeing way off in the distance one or two guys walking the flight-line with white coveralls on! You knew QC was on the flightline and you had better get all of your ground wires in order etc. etc. Of course the most feared QC inspector of all was a guy named "Pineapple" (I assumed he was Hawaiian) always tried to stay one step ahead of him. Us guys who spent a lot of time in Viet Nam really had to worry as we basically didn't have any quality control there and got used to not having things like LOX pans, gloves, etc. I never did know Pineapple's …

Daniel Webster was one day calling on ex-President John Adams, who at the time was failing rapidly in health. As they were talking on topics of the day, a friend came in and asked the aged man how he was feeling. “Adams smiled at the man, and replied: “As a matter of fact. I inhabit a weak, frail, decayed tenement; battered by the winds and broke in upon by the storms, and from all I can learn, the landlord does not intend to make repairs. * * * * snowyday

Way back when Ardmore got the first C-130's, each aircraft had stripes down the sides of the fuselage. Red, Green or Blue. Did these signify which Squadron the aircraft was assignd to? Red 772nd TCS, Green 773rd TAS, Blue 774th TCS for example? There were also stripes on some aircraft below the U. S. Air Force, behind the "Buzz Number". Where were these aircarft from, Sewart?

Hi I got a request for info on an accident in SEA. Son of a casualty. 61-2649 took off from Hue Phu Bai going to Danang. It crashed 15 miles East South East of Hue. I ran a line on a google earth map and it showed a hill in that area right on the coast but the top of it was only 1500 feet. Lars said it hit a hill. 1500 feet 15 miles from the airport? in daylight!! trying to stay under the clouds?? I\'ve seen things done like that but??? AF says it was an accident and not combat related, but not much more. Anyone remember it? What happened? Crew was Maj Anderson, LC Braybrooke, Capt Burkett, A1c Rehm and A2C Ruyff. Aircraft belonged to 773 TAS Mactan Thanks Bob

I am trying to get information the "Cambodian Gunrunners" patch. I read that it was used by the 16 SOS in Vietnam but does anyone know if this was just a unit patch or was it ever officially recognized by the USAF. The squadron had patches made using the old design (adding a full green/tan Herk dropping a CDS)but used "Afghanistan" in lieu of "Cambodia" but we are unable to get it authorized by the leadership at our deployed location. Thanks for any help you can provide.

When I was stationed at Pope, I seem to remember one of our aircraft that was TDY to Mildenhall was involved in a taxi accident in Turkey. It tore up a wing, I think, and there was a lot of red tape generated about it between the U.S. and Turkey. I remember it took a lllooonnnggg time to get resolved. Anyone have any info?

A few years back, I donated my coin to a friend's (Keith Saunders) retirement shadow box thinking I had another coin squirreled away somewhere. Well, after searching through my stash of coins, various - I realize that I don't have a spare. Specifically, I'm looking for the coin we used sometime in '93-94 when I was there (yep, a short time). It said, "50th TAS / ALS / AS or whatever you want to call us" on one side and had a list of aircraft around the edge of the other. Of course, it had the Red Devil emblazoned on one side as well. Let me know if anyone has an extra they'd be willing to part with...it's time for my shadow box.

Help pls. I've found some old personal flt records with old or obsolete airport designators. I can not find out which airports they were for in 1974. I'm looking for RVHO and VWHN. Both were in VN somewhere. Can anybody help ? I'm sending the info to the AF Records Review Board at Randolph. Oh by the way, my request for records from the National Personnel Records Cntr in St. Louis got me a letter saying..." we have been unable to locate the record needed to answer your request. The file was removed from the file area....we will continue to do all that is possible to locate your records"...etc, etc. Ain't that a kick in the teeth ?

Extracted from the Lockheed Code One Magazine Willis Hawkins And The Genesis Of The Hercules By Jeff Rhodes "If this design is really as terrible as Kelly Johnson says it is, the Air Force will think that, too, and they'll give the contract to somebody else. I think we ought to submit the proposal." With those words, Willis Hawkins convinced his boss, Hall Hibbard, then vice president and chief engineer of Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, to submit the proposal for the aircraft that would become the C-130 Hercules. It was 10 April 1951.Hawkins was thirty-seven years old and in charge of the Advanced Design department for Lockheed. He led the team that in a litt…

Can anyone provide any more info on a history project. 69-6572 was the first Pave Aegis bird at Ubon, 69-6571 the 2nd after 572 was damaged by AAA, then after its being lost, a replacement gun system was installed on 69-6570 and flown at Ubon on 31 march 1972. Was the gun installed on any further AC-130Es before the birds moved to Korat in 1974, and then deployed CONUS at the end of 1975? Any timeframes and specific serials that anyone can confirm would be greatly appreciated. Also was there any visible external change after their redesignation as an AC-130H? Thanks, Mike D.

If you are interested in very early operations of the C-130 in Vietnam and throughout SEA please go to my "My Gallery", then click on MY ALBUMN. I have posted 12 documents that trace my movements in the 1965 and 1966 time frame. Included are a number of documents (now declassified), that were taken from the "Official History of the 314th TCW" that illustrate the difficulty that we had in starting up combat operations in the new war zone. I thought I had up loaded them in proper time frame order, but they did not post in proper order. You will find my TDY orders to Okinawa, administrative orders moving me into the 776th in preperation for further TDY to SEA, then there are…
