Hello All, A few weeks ago I began writing down my experiences flying C-130's in Vietnam in 1970 and 1971. FYI, they are now at a new web URL: http://vietnamairlift.com The old URL's still work, but to minimize confusion I've edited my posts here to reflect the new name. More stories will follow. Enjoy. Alan P.S. Thanks for your feedback. It's great to hear your experiences too! :)

Found this in an old box of 'stuff'. Picked it up somewhere in SEA. May have been TSN. I think it may have had something to do with the airdrops at An Loc. I wasn't on any of those missions, so not sure. Can anyone remember how this was used? Sorry about the poor quality of the picture.

hello all,i have found something of interest in an old partwork magazine-warmachine issue 101 published by orbis publications in 1985 on page 2012-in an article about VC mortar attacks called THE NIGHT BELONGS TO CHARLIE -2 pictures of C-130E 62-1865 C/N 3829 with the tailcode DH clearly visible-it is the tailcode of the 345 TAS, yet on all lists i have seen about the destruction of this aircraft it is listed as a 776 TAS aircraft-tailcoded DL-like its sistership 63-7827 C/N 3904 tailcode DL-both were destroyed on the ground by VC mortar attack on 15 NOVEMBER 1967 at DAK TO,REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM. the pictures show the aircraft being destroyed and on fire-thankfully no-one …

This has become a yearly question I have been asking since I joined the forum in 2007. In Dec. 1967 I went on my first input to CRB on acft. 56-0475 from Naha (35th TAS). I went with Sgt. Willard -crew chief, Dan Lafferty--assistant crew chief. I was the third wiper of course! On Jan 1st. 68 I begged to go on a daily mission in-country and Willard reminded me that that was during my time off, but I was young and anxious to go! Lafferty decided to go with me. To make a long story short, I saw enough excitement to last me for a couple more years on that one mission! I will not bore you with the details because if you look back to my previous posts the whole story is the…

I've been in contact with the Air Force Historical Records section at Maxwell regarding some articles I've been working on and while I was at it I asked them about the loss of a C-130A from Naha on a leaflet mission to North Korean fighters in August 1963. While they have been unable to find anything in the records, they have advised me that 56-0474, which is shown on Lars Olausson's list as being involved in a defueling fire on August 27. 1963 is shown as having been repaird and reclaimed. Considering that Lars has no information after that fire on that airplane, this is another C-130 mystery. Of course, it's not really a mystery. Obviously they slapped the tail number o…

I was in bed about half asleep and an old conversation I had with a guy quite a few years ago popped into my head and I knew I knew I had to get up and post this because I knew I wouldn't remember it in the morning!!! I met a guy in my gunshop in the 80's and he and I were talking about Viet Nam stuff and I was telling him about my Blind Bat experiences. He told me that during the time I was there (1968) , he was in the Peace Corps and was in Laos. I asked him what he did there and what it was like living with airplanes going over all night long etc. Also, I know that we never saw lights on the ground from homes/villages etc. If we spotted lights, we called in airstrik…

At the end of the Vietnam War, did the US leave behind any C-130’s or enough cannibalized parts to make operational planes? If so is the status of the planes known?

Dale Brownell was a loadmaster flying the Danang-to-Khe Sanh shuttle during Lam Son 719. He took these photos of the C-130 destroyed by a rocket at Danang. You may also be interested in Jim Theis's eyewitness account. See http://vietnamairlift.com/apsheroes.html Enjoy, Alan Baker

Gentlemen, is there a thread where one can ask what happened to an aircraft only by a very near loss? In explanation, I was once sideways, at high speed in I think an A Model up at Da Lat. All was saved by a Stan Eval Instructor pilot that really knew his stuff. Rumor was it was flown all the way back to Lockeed to check the superstructure. I'm not joking, honest. Sarg

Resting Place for a Red Dragon Herk: A 47-year-old C-130E, one of the Air Force's oldest Hercules aircraft and the veteran of a harrowing rescue decades ago, landed for the last time at Robins AFB, Ga., for display at the adjacent Museum of Aviation. On Nov. 23, 1964, this aircraft was among the C-130s that participated in Operation Dragon Rouge to rescue 2,000 western hostages held by rebels in Stanleyville in the former Republic of the Congo. Damaged by rebel fire departing Stanleyville, aircraft # 63-7868 continued 800 miles on three engines, delivering its passengers to safety and earning i…
