That was a neat dis-cussin on the rocket attack on Herky Hill a couple of posts ago and I sure enjoyed it! I went to CRB on google earth and saw a lot of what I thought I remembered. There are all kinds of markers by the VN and ruskies but only one marker by a GI and it was the 22nd Replacement Batt. If someone with a still functioning brain could go there on google earth and mark the sites I know a lot of us would get a kick out of seeing it. Places such as the C-130 revetments, C-7 parking, Aerial port building, maint buildings and tire shop near the flightline, also the sharp curve at the 22nd Replacement Batt at the bottom of Herky Hill seems to have changed.(I was th…

Does anyone know the names of the individuals in the picture of the Desert One Crew Republic in front of 62-1809? I would like to know the name of the black guy in the first row, third from the left. I believe he was a loadmaster we flew with out of CCK in 1971-72. Thanks.

I was looking at some pics today on the web and came across some of the test bed bird that was at Dobbins in the 80s--N130X--in one of the pictures there is a C-130 parked next to it and it seems to have the HF antenna that is presently on the J models. My eyes may be deceiving me but I didn\'t think that this was something that was around in 1985. Just curious. Oh and lastly I did not take the picture, the good man\'s name is posted on the bottom left. http://www.airliners.net/photo/Lockheed/Lockheed%20L-100-20/HTTB%20Hercules%20(L-382E)/0199863/L/&width=1024&height=659&sok=&photo_nr=3&prev_id=0764729&next_id=NEXTID

Anybody out there remember the PLADS system (Parachute Low Altitude Delivery System) for C-130's? Anybody fly any missions using it or was involved in testing it? Oh yea and the scuttlebutt about using it to get troops out the back end in a capsule and they used live bears for the tests. Bill

I seem to have lost the thread where we had more old newspaper clippings of the crashes posted. Anyway they were saved and the webpage has been updated with 2 more clippings and the crew losses for those crashes. These 2 news clippings are from 1969. http://www.tanwater.com/834/dex2.html#line4 Latest updates include; Go to 834th webpage for the full size clippings and the crash reports. I still have a lot more information to update and some more pictures to post. It is a work in progress. Please be patient if you sent me pictures or documents and they have not yet been posted. Jim

Hello, i just signed up so I could make this post, I've been on a long hunt for something that eludes me still and I hope you all don't mind me using your forum to seek assistance. My father was stationed in Okinawa, 35th from around 65-68-ish. I don't know a lot about his service, he isn't real talkative about himself, never has been. But what I HAVE heard is him complain for 40 years about his damn hat that he lost. I've been on a mission for the last year to try and have one made for him, but the details are sketchy and I don't want to ask him because I want it to be a surprise. Here is what I know: He was part of the 35th TAS, a mechanic of unknown level. I know he…

A friend of mine runs a website ( http://dstorm.eu/ ) dedicated to the airwar part of Operation Desert Storm. On his website he tries to get complete lists of every aircraft that has taken part along with images and extra information where possible. While he does have a list of some of the Spectres that took part in the war he's not sure if the list is complete and he's always looking for more info. I will start another seperate topic for the AC-130H in ODS later. Does anyone have any additions/corrections to this AC-130A list? Serialnumber Nose Art Comment 53-3129 The First Lady 54-1623 …

I am compiling data and stats and some personal stories if possible about the KC-130F model ser. 149808 for a historic brief sheet to present to the Marine Corps museum that will accompany a 6' wing span model of the aircraft that a fellow Marine and myself restored. The info gathered will aid in the concideration of the acceptance of the model as an offical donation to the museum.

This summer I'm writing about my experiences flying C-130's in Vietnam and Thailand in 1970 and 1971. Today I wrote about max effort landings at Pope and how Jane Fonda was arrested at nearby Ft. Bragg. Much more to follow. See http://vietnamairlift.com/popeflying.html Alan

I reckon this is the place for this question. If not, Casey, just put it where it belongs. Anyway, way back in 1970, I graduated tech school with a guy named Stoddard, who I think, went to Rescue Herks , at Pease AFB, NH. He was from new hampshire to begin with. Am I correct in the base and so on??? Is it still active???? I am gonna be up in that area in a few months and would like to look him up, if he is still in that area. Anything anybody can tell me would be appreciated. thanks giz

I just thought I'd ask these questions to see what kind of trips you all had in the past. My best was from Pope in '93 on a St.Croix channel. The whole crew was extremely cool, got to spend a night in Jamaica, and even got to fly the acft (on autopilot of course) for about 5 minutes on the way back to Pope, and the worst was; on an out an' back mission in Desert Storm when a tac gen went out in Oman. The omanis wouldnt let us borrow a maint stand,so me an the other CC,Steve Moles, had to use the ladder fully extended, leaned up on the prop cowling trying to change that damn thing! We used all of the gen pads & ran the eng each time to no avail, and had to spend the night t…

One thing that combat operations permits is the freer expressions of personality that peace time drudgery tamps down. Perhaps the 4 most discussed personalities of CCK between 72 and the closure in 74 was Capt Applebaum (21TAS), 1Lt John Grillo (345TAS) and the Marosla twins (Dewey and Donnie). Muff and I have already mentioned John Grillo in other posts. Does any one know (venture to guess) which of the twins smuggled BB onto the Base in the trunk of his car? This incident to my knowledge made it all the way to the Embassy in Taipei.

Saw an interesting list of Navy MATS Herks yesterday. On the West Coast at Moffett the Navy MATS units were VR-7 and 22, Flying squadrons, and VR-8 which owned the aircraft and did the maintenance but did not fly. In 1966 when MAC came in into being, Navy MATS went away. By 1967, all the Navy C-130E's were returned to the USAF. Moffett had 36 E's. They lost 63-7785 in 1966 so they returned 35 aircraft. 62-1850 63-7782,783,786,787,789,790,791,792,793,807,808,809,810,811,812,813,814,815,836,845,849,850,851,852,853,854,855, 856,862,870,871 64-0503,569,570 We got 26 at Langley Sewart got 3 64-0503,569,570 Dyess got 4 7811, 7812, 7813, 7852 Pope got 2 7836,and 7856…

62-1787 c/n 3732 Paint?

All, I need some help with a print. Does anyone know what markings 62-1787 c/n [cn]3732[/cn] had on it SEA paint scheme in the mid early to mid 70s? Did it have the TAC patch on the Tail? Did it have a stripe at the top of the Tail? If so, what color? Did it have a 374th TAW patch aft of the crew door? What tail code did it carry? The aircraft was assigned to the 21st TAS which I believed carried the DY tail code from 71 through at least 73. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone have pictures? Thanks! Casey

I was cleaning out some books and found the small book (Poo Poo Make Prant Glow) that my wife got in Taichung. In the book, folded, was a list of traffic hazards it Taiwan. We were given this list when we got there in 1971 and it is a true list of the traffic we fought going to the base or to the Navy commissary. EXSISTING TRAFFIC HAZARDS UPON THE ROADS OF TAIWAN 1. Pedestrians failing to utilize marked crosswalks and pedestrian underpasses. 2. Improper child supervision resulting in children running across streets and highways. 3. Motorcycles failing to use proper lanes while traveling on streets and highways. 4. Vehicles failing to yield to r…
