If anyone is interested, I've written several new books and revised my C-130 book (added pictures) and troop carrier history (ditto.) They're all available on Amazon. If anyone wants autographed copies, I am now set up for Pay Pal. Check www.sammcgowan.com/books.html for details on how to order. I have written a sequel to The Cave which is set at Clark in 1969-71. The title is MORTAR MAGNETS.

We just had our first \"official\" Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift Association convention in San Antonio, Texas. Our main goal right now is to build the Association. Currently we have 102 dues-paying members and the goal is for each member to recruit at least three new members during the next year. Let me give you all a little bit about who we are. Bob Layman, a retired USAF CMSgt who spent his career mostly in fighter maintenance, gave a Power Point presentation on his time at Tan Son Nhut as a crew chief on T-39s in the SCATBACK courier mission. Toward the end of his presentation he started talking about the mission over An Loc for which C-130 pilot Bill Caldwell and …

Colonel George "Bud" Day passed away at his home in Shalimar Florida today. He was 88. Born in 1925, Bud served in the Air Force with distinction. After having been shot down over North Viet Nam, he survived 5 1/2 years as a POW. He attempted at least one escape from confinement. During captivity, Col. Day spent a short time sharing a cell with John McCain. Today Senator McCain said "Bud was one of the most courageous men I have ever known". McCain, went on to extend praise for Col Day's encouragement and support to those POW's he was imprisoned with. Among his many accolades, he is also the recipient of the Medal of Honor. A service will be held on Thursday Aug…

Two things - first, Tom Stalvey wants me too let everyone know that he has an extra bunk in his cabin on the Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift cruise next month. We're leaving out of Galveston on October 16 and coming back October 21, the day the TCTAA convention starts. If interested, Email Tom at [email protected]. Second, I've just learned that a new book was recently published on the life of Dieter Dengler, the US Navy pilot who escaped from a Pathet Lao POW camp just south of the Mu Gia Pass and was finally rescued when he was spotted waving a parachute from a flare that had been dropped over him after he set an abandoned village on fire by a Blind Bat C-130 cre…

I just saw an e mail about a reunion of the 36 TAS to be held 23-25 April. Don't know who is running it or where it is at. The list of names and e mail addresses I saw seemed to have mostly McChord folks on it. I did not see many Langley era names on it, and I don't know about Yokota. Maybe someone in the know can fill us in? Bob

This is very shocking news because I had seen him only a few months ago when we had lunch here in Sugar Land. We recently elected him president of the Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift Association. (Mike Welch, our current vice president, will take his place.) Dennis was a pilot who came to Clark to the 29th TAS out of B-52s, then remained in C-130s for the rest of his USAF career. He retired out of Dyess where he was with the 774th and the 463rd Wing, then took a job as airport manager at Roswell, New Mexico. He suddenly on May 16…

My daughter was promoted to Airman on 17 July. She's now at Sheppard for tech school, and no, it doesn't have anything to do with aircraft maintenance. I told her to do anything but, with the way they treat maintenance people these days, and it seems to keep going downhill. I remember when I was in, it wasn't so bad when we were knee deep in shit, until they told us to stand on our heads. BOHICA! A picture of us out at the break area by the Dorm.
