  1. Tiny, all I can suggest is check out the -6CF for the applicable type Herk your dealing with. Many, many oddball requirements, limitations and mandatory human sacrifices will be found there and nowhere else. But I cannot foresee any requirement for a cargo door to freefall to lock in-flight, honestly it just aint going to happen outside of a freak thing
  2. Must be a Navy vs AF thing but what is "bagging" the tank?
  3. \ Theoretically it can stay that way forever, but in the real world as soon as the outside temperature increases the volume in the tanks will also increase (expand) and it wouldn't take too much of a temp rise to start venting fuel; in this day of tree hugging hippys that creates its own nightmare. Another thing to keep in mind is if it is nice and cold when you refuel to shutoff, you can exceed the weight capacity of the tank long before you exceed the volume capacity.
  4. Yep, calling engine starts are a thing of the past. The only place you will see it on a regular basis is at the schoolhouse. The AF fitness program is a joke and has always been a joke, its only purpose is to get some pointyheaded officer promoted for "developing" a new an improved bit of idocy!! The fat boy program is also a friggin joke, I have seen way to many folks that have had to get waivers because they are too muscular and hence too heavy. When I joined the AF I was 6'2" and weighed 140 pounds and twenty years later I was still around 160 (and my max weight of 218) and I could never understand this stupid fat boy program, to me it should be more on appearance (even though that as well is subjective and ambiguous) and not on weight.
  5. Nor turkey vulture proof (or better yet kommiefornia condor proof LOL)
  6. Airshows and Airshow practice are really crew killers Fairchild B-52 Elmendorf C-17 Pope Herk Lapes I am sure there are many many more, I will say in AFSOC they were really really restrictive on what you could and couldn't do for an Airshow or practice for one.
  7. Once upon a time the ABCCC were configured for armor, but I dont know when the last time it was installed. I got to the 7th ACCS in 85 and talking with the old farts, it had been quite a while since it had been put on, I am not even sure if they still had it to install or not by that point. Many and most Herk units (by the mid 80's) no longer even bothered to keep the armor plating and had actually turned it all into DRMO. I had never flown with it installed until I got to AFSOC in 93, man that stuff would beat the snot out of you, especially all the seat armor.
  8. Some kind of vestibule does make good sense, I may try something like that with wood framing and plastic sheeting, much cheaper than harbor freight since I alrealy have all the stuff to do that Thanks for the idea.
  9. I would love to get a new furnace, but at the moment I dont really have two penny's to rub together. I am still having to carry my house in FL and between mortgage and utility's (my daughters still there) it sucks about 1500 bucks out of my pocket a month - ouch. When I install the heating system I am giving a lot of thought to running gas to all the rooms and putting the new IR heaters in each room. That way I can easily Zone heat, much more efficient. LOL, hell this country didn't even have a building inspector until last summer, basically you build how you want and nobody bothers you but yes it is ballon framed and I intend to put fire stops in, I am also going to plumb a fire protection system into the house since I am completely gutting it. Nope, no discouragement here, actually I am loving the snow; we have been getting buried under lake effect snow for the last five days and other than the mess the boots make going into the trailer, its great Thanks for the offer of help RZ, if I run into a block I will make sure to give you a scream!! Today's project - steal some of my six inch heating ducts and use them for a chimney for the wood stove in the living room - heat is sweet!!
  10. I would love to do that, and may in some portions of the house but that stuffs pretty damn pricey!! One inch of the spray foam gives you a R factor or R-3, for the price you can do much better with fiberglass batting, but foam does have the distinct advantage of seriously plugging drafts and small crevices. Besides, my buddy owns the hardware store in town and has a semi load of recovered R-30 glass and will give me what I need - sweet
  11. Well about five days ago our lows were dropping down into the single digits, my water pipe insulation from the house to the trailer didn't meet the grade and it was rock solid ice (that was Monday). Tuesday it went down to about 6 degrees here and not only didn't I have water for the trailer my water lines from the bathroom all the way down to the well in the basement were frozen solid (the pump, accumulator and well head were frozen solid as well), hell the toilet bowl was solid ice!!! Lets not talk about the sewer lines. Well I FINALLY got all (almost all) the water back on at the house and the trailer (had to plug the pex lines to the kitchen sink in the trailer since that line EXPLODED) but it really feels good to be able take a shower again. So its ten PM and I am just getting ready to start wrapping all the pipes in the house following running 80 feet of really really aggressive pipe heater (the ones I had before apparently dont work as good as the package said, they lied, go figure). I really need to get the stub out in for the gas meter so I can hook up this "furnace" down in the basement; I am sure the EPA would keel over dead looking at the thing, it was made by Crane and they stopped making furnaces in 1968 so God only knows how old this thingy is - but it would carry a good 20% efficiency rating LOL Good thing there isn't much plaster (or lathe) still up downstairs, when I get it hooked up the heat is just going to have to flow where it does since I also have many of the heater ducts pulled at the moment (some of the pipes are imitating a chimney for my wood stove so I can take the dryer "((current source of heat)) out of the living room. Now I just have to get myself ready to start digging out my basement, a shovel full at a time. Well I guess I will really know the meaning of old man winter when this season is over, I haven't had to wear my Mukluks since my Crew Chief days that ended back in 85 - just glad I still have em but now I think I am going to buy some bunny boots though. When I get the heat going I am going to canvas the front porch in so I can finish painting and getting all the bits and pieces back together. My parlor in progress
  12. Awww pftttt! If you cut a hose or if it separates its not like you can figure a carp for it. But I hope it wasn't cut over a populated area, if it drifted on decent that might be different (the paradrouge makes a nice little parachute when a hose leaves the Herk).
  13. Who in their right mind would ignore a stall warning outside of an FCF?????? I am shocked by the use of the word "eventually" I mean like "WOW" Thats right up there with blowing off a fire warning.
  14. I dont think we had to get any closer than 10 feet but I do remember that we usually had to change the offset to get it to work right, but its been quite a while so I cant guarantee which way the offset was altered for the "startee" Hell, I've had the squadron commander at the 37th run us right off the airfield at Lar airstation in W. Germany (think it was a Canadian base) doing his windmill taxi starts for his instructor check or upgrade, cant remember which. That runway had pleanty of space, unfortunately the commander had pleanty of space between his ears as well; at least he got the good ol RIF later on LOL. Its really shameful that MAC er AMC cut out the requirement for windmill taxi starts, buddy starts except in the sim. Buddy starts are about as safe as can be if you follow the checklist; now a windmill taxi start on an outboard (or even an inboard sometimes) will sort out the pilots from the morons pretty damn quick. Regardless that's one procedure you really really want to have a pilot experienced with REAL and successful windmill starts (not a lame simulation which isn't very realistic). AFSOC was still doing them on the aircraft when I retired, dont know if they still do or not.

    My Herky

    Your model looks great!!
  16. Not sure what was so funny, I unnerstood everythang she said LOL Now y'all wanna see some funny stuff, check out some of these yankee crackers - now they're a real hoot
  17. I've been there and done that, and I know Tommy Grimes at the 5th had that fun kind of day as well just before I retired
  18. Take that really really fat staff pilot out of the left seat and replace with skinny, hungry squadron pilot
  19. 1)Starter control valve failure 2)BA valve failure 3)Electrical wiring or power failure between the start button and the Start Control Valve 4)In a really bad day, no bleed air on that wing due to being isolated because of crosswing duct failure or "puncture", of course that would require both engines on that wing to be buddy started and probably very specific clearance to operate that way. I am sure there are many many more esoteric causes, like starter gear in the gearbox stripped out or stranger things. Dan
  20. I have done (and received) quite a number of buddy starts/windmill taxi starts starting in Desert Storm/Desert Shield (Aug 90 to March 91) then again doing Sarajavo missions (June or July 92 to Dec 92) What ya need to know?
  21. And they already have snuffage of five garbage bags - SWEEEEEEET
  22. Disregarding the "loss of Ess AC bus" part of it, the aircraft battery is rated as a 36 amp hour battery. What that means is if you are relying on the battery it will last one hour with a 36 amp load (or 36 hours on a one amp load). In real life you can expect to see 10 to 20 minutes on the battery, unless you severely disable lots and lots of stuff. With the SCNS battery to use as well you can double the time but it still really really sucks to try and live just off the battery.
  23. Jeez, I cant believe y'all scoring on the civilian side. You guys must be the kinder and gentler kind of folks. I am surprised that I only scored a zero seeing as how I am such a warm and fuzzy kind of guy LOL
  24. Find out what kind of soldier you really are. I scored 88% SpecOps (go figure)but also scored a whopping 0% civilian  http://quizfarm.com/quizzes/new/rebelranger/which-soldier-type-are-you/
