The 418th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, Calif., is putting the new High Speed Container Delivery System through the wringers. HSCDS, an evolution of the proven Container Delivery System airdrop method, would allow for the aerial delivery of supplies from C-130Js at lower altitudes and higher airspeeds, said Edwards officials in an Aug. 1 release. Initial developmental testing began in June and is expected to wrap up in late August. The testing includes increasing airdrop airspeed from 140 knots to 245 knots, reducing drop altitude to 250 feet above the ground, and using a parachute to extract up to eight 2,000-pound supply containers…

© Tom Gibbons – Global Aviation Resource Having made their last operational flights on 25 October, the final two of 66 Hercules C-130K transport aircraft delivered to the RAF – Hercules C3As XV177, callsign “Reynard 1†and XV214 “Reynard 2†– touched down at MOD St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan, on Tuesday 29 October 2013 for storage and potential onward sale. The arrival of these aircraft brought to an end an exceptional 46 years of RAF C-130K service and the two aircraft joined a further six examples that had earlier entered storage. Notable amongst the eight aircraft is XV177 which, despite being the second aircraft in the in…

Here comes the Christmas holiday season again. I barely made it home for Christmas in 1962, after returning from two months TDY at Homestead AFB, FL for the Cuban crisis. Our finance weenies concluded that all who had been on the deployment, living in barracks and eating in the mess hall had to repay every penny of the separate rations and quarters allowance for that time in a lump sum. So my paycheck for me and my family on December 15th was $1.00 (There was a regulation that required a paycheck be issued, but there was no consideration for monthly payments or anything like that.) Years later, spent Christmas 1969 at Nha Trang AB, RVN with a great group of Herky pe…

We are looking at the C130H-1-1 graphs and trying to work out strip lenghts and weights as compaired to the new civil -1-1 performance manual. In the Take off field length decision tree in the mil -1 -1 . It gets to a point about is crew Assault Qualified ? So what is Assault Qualified? is it just TAC trained ( Airland / Low Level) as apposed to a Basic Quall? or is it more of a Spec Ops role? Chris PS also has anyone crunched the numbers for the new LM 382-1-1 and seen how restrictive it now is?

Is "Ghost riders in the sky" still the great song among Gunship folks these days? I remember being in the company of some crazy S.O.Bs. in the NCO club at Kirtland , as soon as Ghost riders began to play (Johnny Cash version) these dudes started hooten and hollerin like a pack of mad dogs while standing damn near at full attention while hoisting their pitchers of beer all the while as the song played from start to finish. These boys were in town with one of their birds for an appt at the refurb shop. Helluva bunch of good folks though! Little did I know that years later later I would be joining those folks.

LONG BEACH, Calif., April 18, 2011 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today that the Commonwealth of Australia has signed an agreement with the U.S. government to acquire a fifth Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airlifter. The Foreign Military Sale allows the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to expand its C-17 fleet as it faces an increased demand for humanitarian and disaster relief missions. RAAF C-17s supported relief efforts to earthquake- and tsunami-affected regions in Japan under Operation PACIFIC ASSIST for nearly two weeks in March. The RAAF delivered personnel and more than 1 million pounds of cargo -- including food and water, vehicles, disaster relief equipment, an…

From Ramrod, "An Aussie maintenance crew were telling me that all their J's will be converting over to electric engine starters. I have not heard of any testing of electric starters for the AE2100 engine. The reason, so they stated, was to relieve the load and operational time on the APU in the high heat environment, go figure." Bob

Help, I\'m trying to locate some information regarding the portable urinal stations that are self-contained that would be uploaded to the acft when doing personnel drops or large number of pax for long flights. These were used so that all the pax would not have to wait to use the on acft aft urinals. If I remember correctly, they really weren\'t more than a urinal with a large splash shield and line going into a holding tank. The assembly could be strapped to the floor and then off loaded upon arrival to be dumped. It was more or less a go between when you had more pax than could use the on acft urinals but not really enough to warrant a comfort pallet. I believe it …

The B-36J was a state of the art airplane in its day. The Engineer was responsible for starting, maintaining and shutting down the 6 Radial Engines and 4 Jet Engines required to make it fly and mission completed. No modern "Fly by Wire" or "Computer controlled Aircraft" involved here. Just straight old manpower, brainpower and the guts to get it done. This is absolutely mind boggling to think about. http://www.nmusafvirtualtour.com/media/062/B-36J%20Engineer.html

Think this may have been the Herk that was damaged by an Oxygen recharger hose stuffed behind a circuit breaker panel. I took this photo during a Rodeo at Pope around 1987.

Anyone know the max bank angle for the C130?? Is 65 over the limit. I don't know where the number would be written. The old B-1 states "In executing turns under combat conditions, remember that 60 degrees is the maximum bank angle."

A drunken man walks into a biker bar, sits down at the bar and orders a drink. Looking around, he sees three men sitting at a corner table. He gets up, staggers to the table, leans over, looks the biggest, meanest, biker in the face and says: \"I went by your grandma\'s house today and I saw her in the hallway buck naked! Man, she is one fine looking woman!\" The biker looks at him and doesn\'t say a word. His buddies are confused, because he is one bad biker and would fight at the drop of a hat. The drunk leans on the table again and says: \"I got it on with your grandma and she is good, the best I ever had!\" The biker\'s buddies are starting to get really mad…
