I was told that this load was the computers for the army payroll in Korea. I am not quite sure of that, but we did deliver it to Osan. It took a lot of jockeying to get that thing loaded! I think that was the trip to Cubi Pt. that the local (civilian) fuel-truck driver came out with JP-5 and I wouldn't use it until somebody came along and told me that it was okay to use!

I checked Conboy and Morrison's "The CIA's Secret War in Tibet." It sheds quite a bit of light on the arrangements between the Air Force and the CIA with the C-130s commonly known today as "E Flight." Originally, Air Force airplanes were provided for CIA use by the Air Resupply and Communications Squadrons that were set up at various locations around the world, mostly using B-29s but also a mixture of other airplanes and helicopters. During the French Indo-China War the main base of operations was at Clark, but in 1954 it moved to Kadena. I can't remember exactly what the justification was for the weird arrangement at Naha, with the airplanes and maintenance personnel assigned to the 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing and the aircrews and operations personnel assigned to the 6315th Operations Group. It had something to do with AFM 66-1, and was related to the 51st FIW being the host unit on the base at Naha. As far as I know, the 6315th was on the only C-130 troop carrier group. All of the TAC C-130 bases had full wings, complete with Headquarters, OMS and FMS. It may have had to do with when the 21st TCS transferred to Naha in 1958 and equipped with C-130s. I noticed there was some stuff missing or in the wrong place on the Herkepedia. I mentioned it to Joey on the Facebook C-130 Group but at the time didn't remember what I had noticed. Here is a rundown of the original C-130 units: 463rd Troop Carrier Wing - 772nd, 773rd, 774th (joined by 29th TCS at Clark) Was originally at Ardmore, OK, then moved to Sewart around 1958. Nice to be back on the updated & new looking board. Just a little news from the hangar about our C97G Strat project. We got our 20ton crane working & got to put it back in operation again. We moved our 3 spare 4360 engines back inside the hangar & the low timer one we installed at the #3 position on the wing. We also have 4 spare props we are checking out & will install the best one. New used cargo doors & ramps have also been swaped out. We also have done a few gear retractions & our dedicated membership workforce got some good training. Progress is good & now we have the C54 in the hangar also for some well deserved maintenance & inspecti…

I have always wondered about something, and never could get an answer! Of course, it has been years since I asked! I had a good friend at Naha who was in the 21st. TAS and then became a crew-chief in E-Flight. His name is John Eggers. I always asked him just what he did when he went flying, and he would never tell me anything. Even after a whole lot of beer! I heard a long time ago about a mission called Commando Lava, but only the name. Sam McGowan sent me some pictures of the aircraft involved in the mission. I googled it and in an Wikipedia article about the Ho Chi Minh Trail there was a good explanation of it. The article said one airpalne was written off after landing at Chu Lai but I can\'t find any evidence of that. Basically the idea was the used a soapy concotion (Hence Lava) to destabalize the soil on the Ho Chi Minh trail. They tried it 3 times and only the first time worked. I\'ll try to post the pictures. Is there anybody ready to talk about the 35th TCS crew that was shot down off the coast of North Korea on August 6, 1963 yet? Several people who were at Naha at the time have told me bits and pieces of the story but a lot of people are still not willing to admit that it even happened. What is known is that a 35th crew was lost over the Sea of Japan just off of North Korea while on an early leaflet mission. In the spring 1970, I was Port Duty Officer for the 8th Aerial Port Squadron at Tan Son Nhut AB. Our Korean allies had a dedicated C-130 (USAF crew, but mission dictated by Koreans) Flight 642 which flew weekly from TSN to Qui Nhon AB. This flight was handled completely by the Koreans from load planning to loading and unloading. A friend\'s son has made this website as a tribute to his Father who participated in these early HALO tests. The final jump on 16 December 1963 from 43,500 feet took the world\'s record away from the Russians. The website lists the names of the Special Forces and Air Force personnel who made the jumps as well as the members of the crew. The C-130B used for the jumps was 62-3487. While looking at the list of missing pics of Bob Daley's gallerys, I can't remember the fate of 56-0477 c/n [cn]3085[/cn]. I am having a hard time believing that I don't remember it or what happened to it especially since I was involved in Blind Bats etc. during the time it was lost. Was it a Naha bird or was it from Tachikawa? I'm assuming Naha, and thats why I can't figure out why I don't remember it! If any of you have the complete story on it, I would like to hear it. Today is Saturday, November 22. Monday, November 24, is the 44th anniversary of the greatest C-130 mission ever flown. There is a page about it on my web site at www.sammcgowan.com/dragon.html but if you want to read an indepth account of the mission, go to http://www-cgsc.army.mil/carl/resources/csi/odom/odom.asp#map7. There are a few discrepancies in the article. For one thing, it doesn\'t mention the 778th TCS although most of the crews involved were from it. It also gives the impression tht Col. Does anyone out there have any photos of 64-0550 (4045) @ Naples when it broke off one of the main gear assemblies (left, I think) after a screwed up landing? This was in the late 70\'s or early 80\'s. It sat there for a long time before flying out. All I remember of the crew were the co-pilot was Bill Beale & the FE was Billy Legg. I had a line on some pics a couple of years ago, but it didn\'t work out. Thanks in advance. Don R.

This picture of our 1st. Sgt. Msgt. Galloway. He lived in the barracks with us until his wife came over and then he moved downtown! Gary Levesque and I took over his room---We had a sink and a refrigerator! We stacked the beds three high so we had more floor space for a carpet etc. Nobody ever moved in and took the top bunk! It was about 3ft. from the ceiling!! I would post these pics all in one post, but I can\'t seem to go back and forth from Photobucket! I do have some more that i will post later! Ken
