Anyone here know Darrell? This coming Friday at the Ohio Statehouse Darrell will be inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. Only 17 troops are being so honored. In May 1968 Darrell was a crewmember on a herc. that flew into Kham Duc, RVN under fire and evacuated more than 120 Vietnamese civilians and allied forces before the city was overrun by the VC. For this heroic act he was awarded the DFC. Darrell lives in Lebanon, OH. The Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor came into being in 2000 and has annually inducted new members since that time. It has a website at www.ohioheroes.org and a public display in Mottts Military Museum in Groveport,…

Early last Saturday morning Kevin Gaffney passed away at West Cobb Hospital in Austell, Georgia. After retirement he became a C-130 flight engineer simulator instructor at Dobbins ARB and settled in this area. Nearly 10 years ago he was diagnosed with cancer and has fought that battle ever since. In one of his last emails he said he had a GOD given talent for tenacity. Everyone around him knew how true that statement was, as I have never known anyone as determined and strong willed as Kevin in his long battle against this terrible desease. He will be surely missed.

I forgot to make a post on here when Charlie West passed away a few weeks ago. He was one of the old-timers at Pope, going back to the C-123 days when he was part of MULE TRAIN. He was a North Carolina native and had retired in Fayetteville.

A lot of special ops guys will remember Bennie Fioritto. He was the commander of the 7th SOS @ Rhein Main back in the early 1980's. After retiring, he ran the Stars & Stripes bookstore in the MAC Terminal. What a great guy! Below is an excerpt from an email I got this morning. Don R. Subject: Re: Bennie Fioritto told me that in addition to Alzheimer, Bennie has had two open heart surgeries, the second one last June was unsuccessful and now has colon cancer which cannot be operated on because of his heart. He now has Hospice assistance.

I have done some work on the list of airlift/C-130 related books I have had on the Internet for some time at www.sammcgowan.com/books.html. If possible, I've added a link to a particular book on Amazon so you can easily order them. Incidentally, I've found a few that I wasn't aware of before. I'll be adding new books as I learn about them. If anyone knows of any I've not listed, please drop me an Email at [email protected] and I'll add it.

Col. Russell Crane, who commanded the 374th TCW/TAW at Naha, passed away earlier this week in Williamsburg, Virginia. When I get a copy of his obit, I'll post it. Col. Crane came to Naha from McChord and was initially assigned as vice-wing commander. He took over the wing when Col. John R. Neal left in the summer of 1967 and was in command at the height of the Vietnam War (that, for those who don't know, was 1968-69.)

I've sent the manuscripts for my books to the publisher and they should be available soon. Anything, Anywhere, Anytime is a history of the USAAF, USAF troop carrier mission and the tactical airlift mission that followed it. It should be a must-read for all veterans as well as modern military members. No other book has chronicled the entire mission from the troop carrier perspective. Trash Haulers is a revision of my 1988 C-130 book (with the title I hated.) I've done quite of revision and added a few things. They both should be available for purchase around the first of the year if not sooner.

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/fayettevilleobserver/obituary.aspx?n=william-h-baush&pid=154258188 - I got a call over the weekend from Bill Collier, to tell me that flight engineer Bill Baush passed away last week. Bill was a veteran C-130 flight engineer, who was at Ashiya on A-models. He was in Stan/Eval with the 463rd at Langley and Mactan (maybe Sewart before that.) He was chief engineer for PACAF when he retired. Bill is mentioned several times in my C-130 book. Bill also told me that he had gone to Roanoke, Virginia to visit Jim Radford, an engineer at Pope and Clark. Jim retired to his home in Christiansburg, Virginia and made a fortune in real estate, but…

I'm sorry I didn't post this when it happened on September 1st, 2011, but I've been off the board for awhile. I am finally retired from the Air Force! By finally, I mean I took the long road. I started in the Army back in 83, got out after Desert Storm, went Army Guard, then Air Guard, then back on active duty in the Air Force. I made MSgt in '09, and waited until my commitment was up after transferring my GI Bill to Son #1. (Whew! Wears me out just typing it!) Anyway, my last four years and change was as a Herk FE at Dyess in the 40th. All of the FEs are in the 39th or on to new aircraft by now I hear, however. I can consider myself one of the last FEs in that…

Hi, folks, Just wanted to let you know my latest novel, SILENT ENEMY, hits the bookstores on August 4th. It's a story that I hope will do the airlift community proud; nearly all the action takes place in flight, aboard a C-5 Galaxy. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly says, "Aviation thriller aficionados will cheer, and readers of any genre will gnaw their fingernails to the quick." Booklist says, "Fans of Clancy, Coonts, and Dale Brown need to add Young to their must read lists.” SILENT ENEMY is already available for pre-order on Amazon and all the other online booksellers.
