  2. I always tried to make sure the crew chief was taken care of because you could never trust the pilot to do it.

Prop brakes can and do fail for the same reasons drum brakes on your car fails, sometimes its due to contamination of the linings but more often its simply due to the lining being worn beyond limits. This is why the first step for a failed prop brake is to flush the prop brake, trying to clean any contamination from the linings. I used to push the prop backwards during my -1's, mostly to watch the poor crew chief freak out LOL but mostly to get an idea of just how worn it was. Was never dumb enough to write up one that turned backwards on preflight. Another thing most people dont know is its only bad by the book (on the ground) if you use a steady push backwards and it rotates, if you "pop" it backwards its allowed to bust loose and rotate backwards.

I just thought of something The gubbermint needs money The boneyard has oodles of Herks and starlizards write your congrescritter and get them to pass a law authorizing sales of non demilled aircraft to the general public, that could result in BILLIONS in income. A historical note, until JFK/LBJ, joe citizen could go to any of the boneyards and buy any aircraft in there; that program was stopped for reasons unknown in 1963, its time to open it back up again and see more Herks hitting the sky. What do ya think

  9. During LAPES the problem wasn't stalling or a slow flight envelope but wheel heights. When you put put a triple heavy married pallet off the bird at 36K its a huge shift nose up followed by a huge shift nose down when your at the optimum wheel height of 5 feet AGL, let me tell you that yoke moves from stop to stop in the blink of an eye and you have 5 feet to work with and not 50 or 60. This is a problem because procedurally you have to maintain that wheel height until the load calls load clear (and by then the CG shift is done and over with) and the pilot call for the post extraction checklist, you just cant allow the 40 or 50 foot climb when the load exits (load as in cargo, not load as in loadmaster hopefully). I missed LAPES when they did away with it, it was fun and you really got to see what the pilot was made of!! The units that did LAPES had formal training syllabus's but I was stationed at Rhine Main in the 37th TAS when I did it, and you know what the formal training for LAPES in the 37th comprised? Boss tells me "your doing LAPES tomorrow, read chapter 29 of your 55-130 then he walks away!!!! Boy that was a steep learning curve.
  10. Wiring definitely. One place that I have seen stuff like this happen is at the rack where the wires enter, its in a bad place and lots of stuff gets thrown around pretty close to there, some planes have a wire guard to protect this area but some dont. One of the more bizarre places I have seen it was wire chafing in the wing root, reason its bizarre is it checked fine over and over again one the ground; inflight the wings lift and there was just enough movement to short the wire's out inflight but on landing the wings drooped and the short went away.

On E models and like variants (HC/MC-P&E/AC-H) the start button IS a solenoid, originally it was held in by the start circuit until the 65% speed switch in the starter opened the circuit and the button popped out; failing the button popping out the pilot was supposed to pull the button out at 70% They de-energized this system some time in the dim past and the pilot had to hold the button in until 60% then let it go
  12. Worst mission I was ever on fuel wise was in Afghanistan, we took off out of Pakistan with full fuel and hit a formation of MH-47's. I think there was six birds in the formation and they sucked our plane waaaaaay down and then they wanted more fuel; we were at minimums for fuel to return to Pakistan. The pilot said to give it to them anyways as we had a tanker scheduled for us following this offload, asked the pilot three or four times if he was sure (as I never trusted the 135 guys to hang out to actually give us our gas especially "in country") and he told me to give the helo's their damn fuel so I did. Well what do you know, we get the 135 on radar and making our rendezvous --- and they pulled up the boom and went home!!!!!! I tell you it was a hell of a pucker flight all the way back to Pakistan and landed with all crossfeeds opened and all pumps on and every fuel indicator on that plane was bottomed out when we taxied in and shut down. MX comes up on the flight deck and looks at the fuel indicators, looks at me, flips the inverter to inverter from AC and no change, looks at me again and all I could say is "dont ask"

  14. The main gear (driven from the pinon gear, cant remember the right name for it right now) in the gearbox busted into three pieces, ruptured the gearbox letting the #3 prop leave the airplane. One of the bits from the the #3 main gear flew over and chopped #1 blade of #4 prop in-half resulting in 29 MILLION (estimated) inch pounds of unbalanced force and twisted the prop over into the wing easy as can be. (my squadron, 7th ACCS did the accident investigation on this one). different aircraft but another gearbox failure
  15. It would be very impolite to make the Nav buy the beer every night through beer wheel chicanery!! I mean really, that would hurt the amount of available cash that the Loads could suck off of him in the nightly poker games.

It is also there to assist the engine/prop in slowing down and stopping after being shut down on the ground and prevents any high winds from spinning the engine/prop (guess if you have a hurricane this might be an issue); but yes the primary reason for the prop brake is to lock the prop and prevent reverse rotation of the prop following an inflight shutdown

The difference in my setup is that I am on medicare and Tricare Prime I'm not old enough for tricare for life yet, but yes so far the medicare and tricare has worked really well, just getting ready for the screwjob. Does anybody know if there is any group working on a congressional bitch over this gaggle?

Back to the question of proof of altitude/physiological training, that would have been in a fight records file that you would have to have picked up when you separated or PCSed It would have contained all your flight status orders, chamber training records, flights and flight hours, type of plane flown on ect.
  21. They used to have two stripers flying these things, then they pulled them out and put in the zeros and the class a rates soared. It just pisses me off that these jokers get air medals and aerial achievement medals (unless that have finally changed after all the REAL flyers got steamed and started beefing about it)

I cant wait to see what kind of screw job I am going to have with this, I use Medicare and Tricare Prime but they have to bill it as tricare for life but since its actually tricare prime they will probably screw all of us disabled folks. Its also a screw job for the wife, her doctors and oncologists bills are going to suck azz
