Not a good week to be flying cargo planes in Alaska. http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2010/08/02/Three-dead-in-cargo-plane-crash-in-Alaska/UPI-63821280724285/ ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A large multi-engine cargo plane crashed near the Denali National Park headquarters in Alaska, killing the three people on board, a park official said. Officials said the people aboard the Fairchild C-123 -- registered to All West Freight Inc. of Delta Junction, Alaska -- when it went down had been identified but the names weren't being released until relatives were notified, KTVA-TV, Anchorage, reported Monday. National Transportation Safety Board investigators wer…

I know this maybe a unusual post for this site, I'm hoping some of the experts here can help me with my research. A cousin of mine found a large aircraft tire wash up on the east shoreline of Lake Michigan. His son helped roll it up the dune to get it off the beach. When I first heard of it, I immediately thought it might belong to a DC4 - NWA flight #2501, that crashed in the vicinity nearly 60 years. This crash wreckage has been elusive for as many years of searching with sonar. I finally trekked down to the beach and up the dune were the tire has been partially buried. I was totally caught off guard, it was much larger than expected. It measured about 5 1/2' diam…

Here's a question for all you guys/gals still flying the C-130. Late last Saturday afternoon, there was a C-130 flying north of MacDill AFB at around 5,000' (kinda hard to judge the altitude from 20 miles away). He was up there for about 3 hours, but the interesting thing was that there was an A-10 about 1/2 mile in trail the entire time. Any ideas? C-130's are pretty rare at MacDill, so I was really enjoying the noise. My next door neighbor, on the other hand, told me she thought the noise annoying. I held my tongue. Bitch!!! Thanks, Don R.

10/5/2009 - PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- A second C-130 Hercules airlift squadron moved to Colorado Springs Oct. 3, joining the Air Force Reserve's 302nd Airlift Wing at Peterson during an activation and assumption of command ceremony. The 52nd Airlift Squadron joins the 302nd Airlift Wing as part of the Air Force's "Total Force Integration" initiative that brings together active duty and Reserve Airmen under the same organization, flying the same aircraft. Through 2012, the squadron is expected to bring approximately 180 additional Airmen to the Colorado Springs area. "Total Force Integration is about efficiencies," said Col. Jay Pittman, 302nd AW commander…

I had this emailed to me today thought I would share. This apparently took place in Texas somewhere. Reminds me of my days at Dyess back in the late 70\'s early 80\'s. http://herkybirds.com/images/fbfiles/images/snake2.jpg

I was sitting here, and I started looking back at my life and a question came to mind. I now want to ask all a three part question: How many of you have slept on top of a C-130? How many of you have slept in a C-130? How many of you have slept under a c-130? Please tell why and where. Thanks in Advance.

Does anyone know how many Broad Area Reviews were dedicated to the C-130? The only one I could find is the January 1998 C-130 Broad Area Review. The review does a good job of detailing probable causes of the King 56 Accident http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/a...130-bartoc.htm

Every once in awhile there is discussion of the weight that a Herk can haul and it seems to me that we're talking somewhere in the range of 40,000 to 45,000 lbs. Which, to me, is ironic. I spent just about 30 years hauling freight all over the Country and depending on some variables (empty weight of the truck, etc.) that 40,000 to 45,000 lbs is about what the average 18 wheeler will (legally) carry. Doesn't have anything to do with anything, I just thought it was interesting!!!!! tinwhistle (Chris)

I know there was a thread on here a few years ago but never saw a good answer. Looking for a POC, Webpage etc for C-130 Cartoon Illustrations or Illustrations from Dave Davenport (from the Spring Lake NC/Pope AFB area). I heard he passed away but not sure if he cataloged any of his work for resale or not. Thanks Scott

We were talking a bit about the C-130 charcachure that was done for our unit probably 30 years ago. I don't know who did it, but I'm pretty sure it was by a civilian/retired military guy that lived near Pope AFB. Does anyone know who I'm talking about and/or have further information?

I'm trying to help a retired C-130 Crew Chief prove boots on the ground. He was based at CCK and did rotations to TSN with his plane, I have reached out to my Congressman, Steve Womack, to see if we can get a short cut to getting credit for Vietnam service. I was able to supply the Air Force documentation and photos that proved my service. I was lucky to have all my old travel vouchers. They sent me a letter acknowledging my Vietnam service. Most people are not as lucky. I am trying to quantify the number of C-130 squadrons that were based off shore. I was at CCK and we had three. I can't remember where the "A" and "B" models were PCS or where they based in Vietnam. Also …

Is the C-130 crew loss list still available? It was on the old Hercules Headquarters site. I'm trying to find the names of the three enlisted men who died on a B-model that crashed in Vietnam in 1967. Jerry Bennet was the aircraft commander. Allegedly, the engineer was trapped in his seat and the two loadmasters went back in the airplane with the intention of chopping his leg off with the crash ax and the airplane blew up. Jerry tells me that he doesn't remember the exact details of what happened until he woke up in the hospital. Sam That was 58-0722 at Bao Loc 16 Apr 1967. The crew losses were SSgt David Glover, SSgt Donald Kannell, A1C David Chaney. That was also…

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum. I've been searching for many hours trying to find the amount of C-130s that are still in use by governments worldwide, but no luck. I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Also, if there is any database (free or paid) I would also be interested. Thanks for your help!!!

Photo Credit http://www.shephardmedia.com Lockheed Martin announced the delivery of the 2400th C-130 Hercules that it has manufactured on its production line in Marietta, Ga. The company said Marietta's Hercules assembly activities represent "the longest continuously operating military aircraft production line in history." The 2,400th C-130 is an Air Force MC-130J special-mission aircraft destined for beddown at Cannon AFB, N.M. This aircraft's delivery follows a record year for C-130J production in 2011, with 33 C-130Js supplied, a new high for the C-130J model, according to the company. These 33 C-130Js were in six different configuratio…

C-130 Designation Question

I have been working on a new page for the site that breaks down C-130 designations. http://www.c-130hercules.net/C-130reference/C-130DesignationInfo.php I think I have it nailed down thus far but I do have a few questions: Some aircraft have/had a suffix preceded by a dash, e.g. C-130A-II and C-130E-II. Can someone explain? I have also seen some aircraft with a suffix in parenthesis, e.g. HC-130H(N). Can someone explain? Lastly I have seen some EC-130Es referred to as EC-130E(RR) and EC-130E(CL). Where these actual designations or just used to illustrate Rivet Rider vs. Rivet Clamp modified aircraft? --Casey
