Back in the mid 1960's while stationed at Sewart AFB I remember reading a article in the Safety Magazine about a Crew Chief in the Azors who was trying to get some sticky tar off the bottom of the fuselage so he sprayed JP-4 on the fuselage using a low pressure air compressor. The next thing he knew the aircraft had caught on fire and was severely damaged. A couple of months later returning from a TDY to Mildenhall AB, Eng, I passed through Lages AB, Azores, and happened to see that same aircraft resting on cradles in a hanger. The fuselage was severely damaged, the aluminum was melted on the bottom of the fuselage and the landing gears were damaged. Do you know if the…

One time in the early 70's when we were there on the shuttle and we had a day off the pilot said us all go water sking tomorrow I thought he was crazy. Special services rented boats and water skies it was about two miles behind ihe run way. The water was a little choppie but we all had a good time.

The following was from a note from the President of the AF Association and whould scare the .... out of us if we think the F-15 problem is the only one out there. January 16, 2008 AFA members and Congressional Staffers, many of you have commented favorably on the \"elevator speech numbers\" I sent you. It\'s January ... so here are some revealing data on the \"State of the Air Force.\" Fighter Aircraft - average age: 20 years; average flight hours 5400+ Bomber Aircraft - average age: 32 years; average flight hours 11,400+ Tanker aircraft - average age: 44 years; average flight hours 18,900+ C2 Fleet - average age: 22 years old; average flight hour…

Hello everyone...I have been off the grid for many, many months and just now returned to this wonderful updated web site. It looks great! Now a question. I will be traveling from the "north country" to Florida to spend some quality time with my friend from "nam" over Memorial Day. We will be driving right past Moody AFB. As I am an ol' raggedy ass C-130 crew chief and Moody has C-130s will they let me in for a visit? I and my wife have the DOD ID and Privelege card, so I know we can enter the base for BX priveliges etc., but do think I'd be able to have some limited access to Herk? Thanks for any advice....Chris

The thread hijack talking about zero flap takeoffs got me to thinking this would make a good thread. What is the most Embarrassing/Stupid/I should be dead/just plain boneheaded thing you have done in your career with the Herk? I would have to say my most "oh shit" moment was back in 86, I was in the 7th ACCS and we had just finished our ORI (or whatever TAC called them) and we were taking the TAC IG team back to Langley. Well once we landed at Langley we called tower for a progressive to parking, the response was "Mopup 71, uh we dont see you, as a matter of fact your not on our airdrome". Talk about the cold flush dropping from your head to your gut, the ne…

With the transition from E's to J's there are a couple of guys loosing jobs. Where are they going? Are the FE's moved into maintenance positions? What about the poor Navigators who are replaced by a GPS unit? What is their future? We must be talking about hundreds of men looking for work.

Pardon my ignorance please. I wasn't an airlifter back in the day, although I spent a year of my life at lovely Ubon Ratchtani on the banks of the lovely "Moon River" '71/'72.

http://www.167aw.ang.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123162744 West Virginia Airmen Use C-130 As Trainer By Staff Sgt. Sherree Grebenstein West Virginia National Guard MARTINSBURG, W.V., (8/17/09) - The 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard is now officially home to the C-5 Galaxy, but another aircraft can be found parked on the flight line. And while the aircraft will never fly on another mission, it may just save lives. A C-130E Hercules destined for retirement to what is also known as the "bone yard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Ariz., was diverted from Ramstein Air Base in Germany last month for use by Airmen based her…

I've seen it laying in the apron for lots of time. The story i know is that it belongs to a private owner and used to belong to the USAF. Its suposed to inform the USAF everytime that it changed owner (in order to prevent shady ops i assume) and they did not. It came to OGMA for a major overhaul and a FAA inspector saw it there at the time. He contacted the proper authorities just for the curiosity and since then it was forbidden to fly (how?) and the owner just didn't pay for the services. Its been sitting there since... I don't know the serial but i can find out... http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.893292,-9.025344&spn=0.002426,0.006523&t=h&z=18
