  2. While on rote to Mildenhall one time, my plane and two others were selected to fly the AF band around Europe. We were gone a few weeks. Rome, Venice, Bern Switzerland, Copenhagen, and others. We were required to wear civies, not uniforms or anything military. Great duty.
  3. I've slept on the hard steel ramp waiting for fuel or maintenance after 36 hours of solid work at Cam Rahn bay, slept under it waiting for the crew to arrive in Las Vegas (Nellis), slept in flight in a stretcher strung from the ceiling in a cold weather sleeping bag. I don't think I ever slept outside on the top. I've slept sitting up in one of the cockpit seats waiting for maintenance people. Some times it was my "home".
  4. I'm an old "A" model crew chief. Three bladed props will do!
  5. It's on the Internet, so It has to be true!?????????????????????
  6. The aircraft from the accident at Khe Sahn was scrapped at Cam Rahn after landing on the belly. It sat along one of the taxiways. It was just dragged there and left. We used it for a parts depot. I posted photos of what was left of fuselage some time back. I had heard something had gone wrong with the drop and it had hit a bulldozer at the end of the runway and tossed it into a bunker, killing a couple of guys.
  7. I was with a crew one time flying a bird from Marietta to CCK. Several stops along the way. On the way to Wake Island the A/C let me sit in the left seat and the co-pilot clicked the autopilot off and let me fly for a while. Same thing.....porposing! It wasn't easy to keep straight and level. Just had to relax and let the plane fly. Never quite got the hang of it. About the stolen 130, it sounded on the radio like something happened to stop the flight. Never knew for sure.
  8. I did a taxi check for nose wheel steering shim while at CRB. Had an officer in the right seat. Started down the runway and the Officer asked if I had ever taken off. I said "no. He said pull back on the yoke. I did and we rose a little. He then asked if I had landed and I said the aircraft is yours SIR! CRB was a long, long runway. Taxi check was fine and I taxied back to the revetment. Tower never called. Never heard any more about it. TIMES HAVE CHANGED. When the crew chief stole the aircraft from Mildenhall, I was with a training flight to Puerto Rico. We listened on the radio. I don't remember the exact outcome, but the A/C said it was Handled! It's been a long time ago, but these are my memories. I crewed 55-025 out of Naha. Spent a lot of time in CRB and one trip to Ubon. No RVN time on my DD214!
  9. I was a Senior in High School. Someone came in and said the president had been shot. All the girls started crying. School was dismissed and we spent the next three or so days watching TV. I saw Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald! A truly sad time.
  10. Yes sir, I am!!!!!!! And have always been!!!!!
  11. I changed a few windows from bird hits!
  12. I had a boss do that to me once, and I told him it just made him look like a poor supervisor as he was not able to see a good job done and write it up correctly. I never got another review from him. He retired and I quit!
  13. I was working as Crew Chief on an "E" model at pope and we were preparing to drop a load of troops. The troops had been loaded and the crew was standing at the front of the aircraft waiting for launch time. I stepped into the crew door and the jump master was sitting there smoking a cigar. I asked him to put out the cigar and was told I didn't have enough rank to tell him what to do. I was an E-5 at the time. I stepped back outside and spoke with the AC who was a Bird Colonel about the incident. He said come on. We went into the aircraft and the Sargent jumped to attention. The Colonel told him to put out the cigar, which he did immediately, and informed the jump master when he was speaking with me to just imagine I had "birds" on my shoulders also. There were a lot of yes sirs. When we went back outside the Colonel told me it would probably not be a good idea to go to town alone for awhile. The Colonel also made the Jump Master clean up the mess of the cigar in the cargo compartment before we took off. I did not fly on that trip.
  14. I flew one Blind Bat TDY to Ubon out of Naha. My plane was hit by a 37 MM in the right wheel well and the refueling panel caught on fire. The plane landed safely and we put it back together enough to fly back to Naha. I don't remember the tail number, but it went back to MOD. I am not sure if it ever returned. Photos of the damage are in my gallery. This was an "A" model. That is all I flew out of Naha. The rest of my time at Naha was spent at CRB. I flew on the plane the night before it was hit. My Assistant flew the night it was hit. Too young to be scared, I guess.

  16. Take a look at the images I have posted. They were all done with this slide scanner.
  17. I bought one off Amazon and hooked it to my computer (usb) and it scanned the slide and made a file. It was pretty cheap and easy. I will also post the maker and model when I get home from work. Dallas
  18. Guess it is a different Reed Mulkey. Mind gone for memories. Too much brew!
  19. Seems like I also remember Reed Mulkey. Great big guy. I don't remember whether it was from Naha or Pope.
  20. I do believe you are correct. Dallas
  21. That's is what government jobs are all about. Fortunately there are some who get things done and correctly!
  22. Seems to me I remember that when you pushed the start button in, it had to pop out in so many seconds? CRS I guess. I never heard the likes of switches! What have they done to our Herks?
