Just came from the Marietta Ga. Air Museum today. AC-130A 54-1623 c/n 3010 has been turned over to them by the AF museum and they are in the process of moving it out the back gate at Dobbins to their site. They are going to paint it in the colors along with the nose art "Ghost Rider" that it wore in VietNam as it has the 3 bladed props on it. Good to see it being given a home where it can be properly displayed and maintained. Will give updates as they occur. Will send Casey a pic or two to post as I gettem'. Bill:)

6/2/2011 - U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFNS) -- A C-130 Hercules ramp support platform designed by four cadets here in May could save not only Air Force dollars but also the backs of the loadmasters who currently drag around 75-pound monstrosities, officials said. The newly designed "milk stool," as the ramp support platform is called, would weigh 20 pounds, while supporting a load of up to 61 tons, according to a presentation May 5 by Cadets Aadit Patel, Zachary Peters, Jeremy Robben and Joshua Yeaste to the Air Force Academy's Department of Mechanical Engineering. The department has begun discussions with the Air Force engineering authority at Robins Air Force …

I'm trying to help a retired C-130 Crew Chief prove boots on the ground. He was based at CCK and did rotations to TSN with his plane, I have reached out to my Congressman, Steve Womack, to see if we can get a short cut to getting credit for Vietnam service. I was able to supply the Air Force documentation and photos that proved my service. I was lucky to have all my old travel vouchers. They sent me a letter acknowledging my Vietnam service. Most people are not as lucky. I am trying to quantify the number of C-130 squadrons that were based off shore. I was at CCK and we had three. I can't remember where the "A" and "B" models were PCS or where they based in Vietnam. Also …

Rate your chow halls! My best was at Midway NAS.The food was great the service was good. The food might have been good because I hadn't had a meal in over eight hours. Midnight chow was always the best SOS hot you can't beat it over scramble eggs love that still make it once in awhile. But truly from a country boys stand point all the food was good if you had been use to eating cornbread and beans everyday.

A while back we talked about the MC-130E's and I mentioned a rumor that I heard that at least 4 MC-130E's were going to the 189 AS in Idaho. Supposedly the 189 was BRAC'd. I just got an e mail today that said 4 stored MC-130E's had been sent to ID. Can anyone confirm it? is the 189 going to become an SOS or are they just going to haul trash with them? Thanks Bob

The last time I was at RAF Mildenhall was probably in 1984. Well, that's not exactly true -- I visited it last night on Google Earth, which brought up some questions. First, is the Top Four Club still there? The one out the back gate and across the street? What was the "lady's" name there that could recite the bold face as good as any crewmember? She had an old-style flight jacket covered with patches. Never mind, it just popped into my head; Baby Jane, right? It looks as if all the old barracks have been replaced by newer dorms (God, I hate it when barracks are called dorms!! -- too Joe College). I'm talking about the barracks built around a quadrangle. Does the…

Just spoke to a good friend that just got back from Taiwan. Said they went to Taichung and couldn't recognize anything there! Said that it looked more liike Taipei than Taichung. Was so built up and so many people, even going all the way to CCK was now built up. Where there were once nothing but rice fields are now replaced with houses and commercial building. There was no trace left of the Dozen, Half Dozen, or Bar Town. Not to mention the cost of living was out of sight. Everything was very expensive now. I asked him to make me a copy of the DVD he made. If and when I get it I will post on here for anyone that might want to see it. Oh yes, Chang's motorcycle …

My wife and I recently made a trip to Davis Monthan AFB near Tucson Arizona. I felt the need to visit some of the planes I have worked on that are no longer in use and can be found only in Museums. I took 547 photos of planes in the Private Junkyards near the base, on the bus tour of the Boneyard and the Pima Air and Space Museum. I am posting some of the Herks I saw on the trip. I was also amazed at the number of planes I have never seen before. The 1st photo was taken while we were at one of the private junkyards. It was doing touch and goes and I decided to take a photo of it. My Wife made a comment about the Shark's mouth painted on it. I informed her that they d…

Back in 66 there was an accident at Dyess. 63-7886 crashed on a night low level. All on board were killed except one of the LM's A2C Gary Speer. The son of the FE wrote looking for info about the crash, also wondering about Gary Speer. Seems I remember he was still alive but "Old Timers"? Anyone have any info on Gary Speer? Thanks Bob

Well today we started to paint Ghost Rider in the colors she wore toward the end of her tour in Viet Nam, solid black with red FT and serial number on the vert fin. We are lucky to have a pic of her in these colors while in VN. All other numbers etc. will be in red We at the Marietta Museum of Aviation pressure washed the old gray chalking paint off for these past several weeks and sanded her quite a bit. We had 2 sprayers going and covered a great deal in only 4 hours today. We had a great team working on the old Herk and it shows. Included are a few pics. Will keep the site updated as we gett'er done and put all the lipstick on. Bill

Would like any info on a C- 130 ABCCC I was sent to Tan Son Nhut in 1965 as the crew chief. I know it was used as a command ship for the air war and Rolling Thunder. The crew stayed downtown at the Majestic Hotel in Saigon by the river. The aircraft was parked across the runway for the main base. I know the bomb dump was behind us which wasn't a good feeling. Call sign of the aircraft was "Headshed". I was relieved in December 65 by Ken Moser who is a site member and we were assigned to the 314 TCW at Sewart, Tenn. which was moving to CCK Taiwan at the time. Looking for serial number and whatever happened to the bird. Both Ken and I were discharged in 1966 and I know a l…

Just thinking back to my first real experience with Herkys. I think it was in December of 1970. Some of us from the Aerial Delivery section at Travis went on a mobility to Ft. Greeley, AK. It was a joint operation between the Air Force, U.S. Army and the Canadian Forces. They moved the Army guys out of the huts and into tents to make room for us spoiled air force guys. At one point, the wind chill was 116F BELOW zero. Ft. Greeley\'s ramp could only hold about 2 large aircraft and we were trying to run an operation with Canadian 130\'s and our 141\'s. One time one of our 130 crews asked to have something unloaded from their a/c. I went out there with one of those large,…

New SEA questions; Somewhere I had the name of the loadmaster on 62-1853 that was shot down at Soc Trang 12 Aug 72. He was the only crew member who survived. Does anyone remember his name? Most of the crew were from the 776 TAS. On 28 Apr 1975 during the Saigon evacuation 72-1297 was destroyed on the ramp at TSN. 72-1297 was a MAC aircraft from Little Rock, but I have seen it in 2 places that it was a 776 AS squadron aircraft. 776 was at Clark at the time so I was wondering if the crew were from 776 or if the 776 thing was a mistake. Thanks Bob

A couple of pics from Bobby hunter of 55-0012 derelict at Brooks AFB. Remember the weight and balance computers that never worked. Those and the angle of attack computers that never worked were really good buys. Also the A model refueling panel. Bob

Some good news. After years of rumors that 57-0520 (ex-Tanker 88, ex-N138FF) c/n 3227 was to be scrapped, I'm pleased to report that after more than a year of hard work and flight prep, it's just about in shape for a ferry flight from Coolidge, AZ (P08) to its home at Williams-Gateway Airport (KIWA) for painting and installation of avionics and the A/A32H-4A Cargo Handling System (Dual Rails), etc. It now has the FAA registration N119TG. For the past 20 years or more, it's been the property of International Air Response (IAR) and has been pretty much derelict. With increasing work available in oil spill dispersal spraying, IAR made the decision to make another aircraft …

It says in the GE and in the -6 to set tires to a slightly lower pressure for substandard fields, as I\'m sure you all know. It also says to set pressures for the highest takeoff weight of the day. So if you\'re taking off from a concrete runway, then landing on dirt, then coming back to concrete, do you set the tire pressures to the max gross weight for standard fields or for the dirt fields?

What do you have to do to go from slicks at Dyess to a Talon? How and what are the prerequisites? It\'s not advertised on AMS. Thanks.
