http://www.boeing.com/news/frontiers/archive/2007/june/i_ids04.pdf PDF from Boeing explains the project in detail. On page 60 of the April, 2008 edition of Popular Science magazine an article lays out the basic details of the project that Boeing is working on at Kirtland AFB. A 40,000 pound (COIL) chemical oxygen-iodine laser is being mounted in the cargo compartment of a C-130. The project is still in the experimental stages. When it is operational the laser packing C-130 will, no doubt, be the world\'s deadliest gunship. It is expected the laser gunship will be able to fire a computer guided, stabilized laser beam 17 inches in diameter from an altitude of 10,000 feet…

External Tanks on C-130J

Most photos I have seen of the J-model are without external tanks, but I have seen at least one J-model photo with externals (may have been a Brit). Is there a standard configuration, or is it by customer request?

Some good news. After years of rumors that 57-0520 (ex-Tanker 88, ex-N138FF) c/n 3227 was to be scrapped, I'm pleased to report that after more than a year of hard work and flight prep, it's just about in shape for a ferry flight from Coolidge, AZ (P08) to its home at Williams-Gateway Airport (KIWA) for painting and installation of avionics and the A/A32H-4A Cargo Handling System (Dual Rails), etc. It now has the FAA registration N119TG. For the past 20 years or more, it's been the property of International Air Response (IAR) and has been pretty much derelict. With increasing work available in oil spill dispersal spraying, IAR made the decision to make another aircraft …

Just started reading the book and I am amazed how TAC seemed to have no regard for its people in those early days of the 50' and 60's. People and machines were moved around without any regard it seems to the well being of the folks. Coming from a pretty stable SAC in 1966 I found that PACAF and later TAc itself still seemed to have no regard for the airmen even until I retired in 75. Being assigned to troop carrier in the 50's and 60's had to be hell.

Being out of the loop for so long, it is hard to keep up on the USAF changes. There have been lots of changes in the Herk community lately. Associate units at Cheyenne, Elmendorf and Pete have closed and their UE reduced to 8. 327 AS at LRF has closed or almost closed and the last I heard, they went from 17 to 2 Herks. The Guard and Reserve have been shuffling Herks to put similar model Herks in the same units. The older H2's have started to retire to the Boneyard. They are threatening to close the 95 AS and 2 AS at Pope again, and I just read a proposal to try to bring C-17's to Pitt to replace the Herks. From what I have been able to f…

I read recently about the last Herks leaving AK ANG and also the Herks are leaving the 328 AS at Niagara. The 4 HC-130 from 211 RQS went to Patrick 60-2103,2104,93-2105, 2106 1 H from the 144AS went to 181AS at Carswell 89-1185 4H's from 328AS went to 357AS at Maxwell 89-1187,1188, 91-9141, 9142 Heard that the last 4 Niagara H's are going to 357 too, 91-9143, 9144,92-3021, 3022. Supposedly all Maxwell H's are going to the Boneyard. I have not heard anything about the remaining 144AS H's. Can anyone give us an update? 82-0057,0059,0060, 0061, 89-1182,1183,1184? bob

I heard that 68-10935 was flown back from Ramstein to Martinsburg WV to be used as a trainer? to be preserved? Maybe RZ can find out for us. This was the last flying 68 model. They were delivered the year I started flying Herks. I never flew a Herk that young. Bob

I have come across some pictures of the AC-130H/U upside down. Appears to be a twisted engineers idea of a good time. Any ideas why this is?

1966-10-2 USAF 776 TCS C-130E 62-1840, c/n [cn]3803[/cn], shot down 1970-10-2 USAF 776 TAS C-130E 64-0536, c/n [cn]4025[/cn], crash. While I understand the pain associated with the loss of an aircraft and FRIENDS I do realize there are lessons to be learned from most aircraft losses. I use a number of mishap reports (details) in my FE training classes and wonder if there is a way to link the post "Today in C-130 History" to the reports? Maybe a members only area or a link to the data base that is public. Also any good news post out there? Thanks Guys/ Gals and be safe out there!!!

Thanks to all who have helped me with my project in tracking down the history and disposition of the C-130 'A' models that were once assigned to the 118th/105th in Nashville! Anyone interested in receiving a copy in Microsoft Word format can sent me your email address via private message and I'll be happy to send a copy to you. I've be able to find a lot of photos and I need some help identifying the units (and putting a timeline) with regard to the tail identifiers on some of the birds.
