A friend and I were talking the other day about the Mildenhall and Rhein Main rotes and a question came up -- I know the call signs were "Old" and "Ask" but which one was for which rote? Which brings up another question -- were those call signs ever used after that for any other operations or exercises? I did a lot of rotes to both places both as a crew chief and an FE. Even did one to Evereaux back in the mid-1960's. Anyone remember that call sign? Thanks, Don R.

I was browsing the gallery and an image of this aircraft popped up in the random images. Anyone know what happened to cause the damage that resulted it it being written off in Nov 84?

CCK Museum Needs Unit Patches The ROCAF office in charge of the new American Footprint Museum at CCK AFB has asked if we could provide copies or original patches of the units assigned at CCK.. They were looking for any of the 6217th patches when they called today. I Googled the 6217th USAF Hospital and found a copy of the Hospital Patch on a web page from a guy who was at CCK and worked at the hospital. Unfortunately, it is not a sharp photo and cannot be blown large enough for display. This is the largest I could get without it running into fading out unrecognizable colors. I think the bottom says Penduwm Curage? Obviously not the right …

I heard a long time ago about a mission called Commando Lava, but only the name. Sam McGowan sent me some pictures of the aircraft involved in the mission. I googled it and in an Wikipedia article about the Ho Chi Minh Trail there was a good explanation of it. The article said one airpalne was written off after landing at Chu Lai but I can\'t find any evidence of that. Basically the idea was the used a soapy concotion (Hence Lava) to destabalize the soil on the Ho Chi Minh trail. They tried it 3 times and only the first time worked. I\'ll try to post the pictures. I was watching the Military channel the other night when a program came on about the Mayaguez ship that was captured and the crew held hostage. What I would like to know is which of you flew the Herk that dropped the BLU-82 which gave the troops on the ground a breather from the intense attacks. whoever you are thanks for helping those fellow warriors. Many of them came home because of that bomb drop. Take care. wil

Hello-I was here a few years ago, had an older brother that served at Forbes back in the 70s, actually 70 to 74 roughly. He was working with maintenance on C-130Es I believe. He took ROTC in college, graduated college in 70 and Uncle Sam sent him to Chanute for some type of training. The next I heard from him he was stationed at Forbes in Topeka, I think. Over the years he mentioned traveling to Spain, Germany, Panama, and a hush hush trip to Southeast Asia. I always saw him when he returned for visits home in his blues, never in coveralls. I remember him having some RBF flags on his stereo unit on top of which stood a model of a C-130 Hercules, 1/72 scale I believe. He a…

I was digging thru some stuff in the loft the other day and stumbled on some old video\'s. There was one where our Herk got stuck while operating as a bladder bird. In Bolivia must have been in the 80\'s. I can remember it was a real bad week, only to get worst when we got out of the first hole only too get in other and this time we knocked off no.4 prop. And I still remember the CCT guy telling us \" this area is good cause I checked it myself\", yeah!! Anyways if someone can give me a clue on how too transfer from VHS to something that I can share. Let me know?

I am doing a pair of illustrations to commemorate a buddy of 35 years Air Force service for his 65th birthday. He was attached to the 824th Air Police Squadron at Kadena AB in 1965 and used to tell stories about pulling duty guarding C-130's at Kadena. One of the illustrations is based on his stories. I am wondering if anyone has information about those Hurkybirds. Specifically the unit they were attached to and their paint scheme. I have not come across a picture of a Herk on Kadena from that time period. Can't ask my buddy as this is a surprise.

Is there anybody ready to talk about the 35th TCS crew that was shot down off the coast of North Korea on August 6, 1963 yet? Several people who were at Naha at the time have told me bits and pieces of the story but a lot of people are still not willing to admit that it even happened. What is known is that a 35th crew was lost over the Sea of Japan just off of North Korea while on an early leaflet mission. The offical history of the Jilli mission reveals that the 35th was given responsibility for developing a leaflet mission in \"late 1963\" but goes on to say that drops were inexplicably made with C-47s until early 1965. A former Naha officer told me that he remembered a…

Hey guys, In the early 80s, the USAF adopted a desert camouflage on some of its C-130s. Why were these aircraft painted in this desert camouflage? How long did it last? And how many aircraft were involved? Thanks.

A few questions, hopefully someone can enlighten me! 1. When did the mission change from Volant Solo to Commando Solo? yes I know when AFSOC took over, but when exactly? 2. Dash one was LTM 1EC-130E(RH)-1. What did the (RH) stand for? Aircraft mod was Rivet Rider (I thought). Thanks, Dave Mason

The 3rd TFW ROCAF at CCK AB, Taiwan has a ROC/USA Military Museum at the old CCK Base Chapel that shows the C-130 Basing of our C-130 units and other units that were stationed there temporarily. Attached are 2 new photos of the Chapel. These photos are from the TaipeiAirStation website at http://mirach.lunarpages.com/~taipe2/index.htm They are looking for more info and donation items from prior CCK personnel for exhibit at the museum. I'm working on a history project of the old 'A' models which were once assigned to the 118th TAW (Tennessee Air National Gauard) in Nashville. I can find very little info on 55-0027, other than a few tidbits here and there. I'd like more info on the operational life of this aircraft for this history project. Thanks!

i am currently the crew chief on 64-14854 and there are several things on this plane that i am trying to figure out, first is the lox servicing door on the left hand side of the nose. there is nothing behind it anymore, but it does look like there use to be brackets, there is one bracket that is the same as the righthand side lox bottle that holds the servicing/vent lines in place. so if anybody has a clue to what this is all about it would be helpful, also the flare tubes in the cargo door stick out and have shrouds on them is this normal for the original style flare tubes? i'm use to seeing the style on my previous plane 69-5832. also there are what appears to be two ca…

Anybody out there know where to find a Vietnam low-altitude approach book--especially approaches for Quang Tri? It could help locate an MIA.

I was told that this load was the computers for the army payroll in Korea. I am not quite sure of that, but we did deliver it to Osan. It took a lot of jockeying to get that thing loaded! I think that was the trip to Cubi Pt. that the local (civilian) fuel-truck driver came out with JP-5 and I wouldn't use it until somebody came along and told me that it was okay to use!

There's a lot of confusion about C-130 units that flew in SEA because of the many unit redesignations that took place. Here is a run-down (this only applies to troop carrier/tactical airlift.): 1958-1965 - There were four C-130A squadrons assigned to PACAF, with the fourth arriving in 1963. The 815th was at Tachikawa while the 21st and 817th were at Naha and were joined by the 35th. They were supplemented by TAC rotational squadrons. 1966-1969 - In December 1966 eight TAC squadrons were transferred to PACAF along with two wings. The 41st TCS went to Naha to join the 6315th Operations Group, which became the 374th Troop Carrier Wing in August, 1966 and made the fift…

I recently posted the entire incident report for the incident when assistant crew chief Sgt Paul Meyer stole his airplane at Mildenhahl. This report has been available for years - I got it around 2000 from somebody. I included a link to the Yahoo group Bob Woods set up, but he really doesn't have any additional info. At one point I also had a file with transcripts of the HF conversation, but can't seem to find it so I mustn't have transferred it as I've switched computers over the years. His last words to his wife were "I've got a problem. I'll be right back as soon as I take care of it." The Yahoo group contains an Email from Jerry Bennett, who was one of the C-130 pilot…

Came across this site recently. It's sizable but, it may be worth the effort if you have ever wondered where a buddy disappeared to. There are also posts from family members hoping to get information about loved ones, etc. I have found no one I knew yet but, did find a friend of a friend and hope to link them up for that long overdue reunion. Non vets, if you want to sense the pulse of those who served then. As well as the obvious life long connection they have to a time long ago. This is a good place to experience it. The link provided is to the last page, which is actually where the first posts were made in 2003. Oh, and this too. I've made it through 100…

I was looking through The Airlifter yesterday and came across a picture of an A-model taken at Naha of an airplane with a white upper fuselage. The photo is black and white so its hard to tell but I assume the fuselage was painted gray. I remember seeing this paint scheme on the White Whale C-123 but don't recall ever seeing a C-130 painted this way at that time. The caption says the airplane was undergoing an inspection by the new 374th FMS, which had just activated. In fact, the article was the occasion of the activation of the 374th Troop Carrier Wing. Anyone have any idea what airplane this was? The only thing I can think of would either be the 315th AD command airpla…

Hope the photo attached.... Anyway, have a look at this photo. The gentlemen in front is my uncle, Charlie Agar. If you knew him, please pass ANY INFO. He passed away 23 Sept 08, never got a chance to catch up with him and hear his stories, crew chief tales etc. I believe this was a Blind Bat plane, or maybe one of the early Gunships (can't see the back)???? Assuming the tail number is 0647....can't find anything on it. Again if you know ANYTHING about that plane, post it up. I'd love to see what you got, anything at all. Anybody got anything?? Thanks, topbolts

Port aft brake is the only one that overheats. We did a check out of the brake system. Found the port forward brake wasn't getting the correct pressure under normal brakes. When emergency brakes were applied, the system pressure was normal at all brakes. The rest of the brakes were operating normal under normal braking. To correct the issue, we found that the anti-skid valve wasn't porting the pressure properly. We also changed the brake half the dust boots melted off. I was thinking it might be the brake fuse on the normal side of the port aft brake. We also had the anti-skid tested. It checked good. Any ideas would be helpfull, thank you! …
