Goodday to y'all forummers, my squadron is a user of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules Cargo Winch. Recently there's a Special Occurence Report (SOR) regarding the cargo winch give way causing the load to roll down the ramp and hit the aft fuselage causing a tear. I'm in the process of investigating this incident trying to determine whether it was the cargo winch failure or there's a mistake in the loading procedure. The senario while the cargo winch is as follows: 1. Loadmaster 1 (L1) operated the cargo winch while Loadmaster 2 (L2) observed the loading of the cargo and gives instructions to L1. 2. The load is a tri-wheel hydraulic cart requiring a cable pull of approx …

I am doing a paper for ERAU about reduced TIT to save engines on T56. I was with a unit that flew 1010 and we had minimal engines changes due to turbine failures, compared to a fleet squadron that was flying at a recommended 932. I am looking for any information that may prove my claim..however I am open to any information that may prove me false also. It is a masters paper and I am just trying to get info. 1. flight hours between engine removal and replacement due to turbine failure, cracks 2. effect of constant touch and go on engine performance compared to cruise flight Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rick

I'm stumped. Bobby Hunter sent me some great pics of the 2 Herks in use at the Firefighter School at Goodfellow AFB. 61-2364 and 62-1794. They came from Sheppard to Goodfellow. First question, I flew B's for 12 years. The B's we had all had oxygen bottles. There was no lox on any of them as i remember. Old timers?? Were there any B's with lox? Second question, There was a lox service door, this is an E, 1794, but on the inside of the door there was a sticker, see attached pic, that says Reference T.O. 1C-130B-2-10. Does this mean that the TO is for B models only? Does this TO apply to E models too? If it was for B models see question 1 above. What made it more inter…

A few years back I read something about how the plastic chocks were not rated for the C-130 for power runs but I can't find it anywhere now. It was some TO that had aircraft parking and mooring and a bunch of other stuff. I tried finding it today but had no success whatsoever... I thought that it was in the 1-1A-17 or 00-25-??? TO but I just can't find it anywhere.

Hello, Fellow Herky Bird Members, I am a new member and need some help info. Where can I find the statement or information as to NOT refueling a C130 with all leading edges removed. Is this in tech order, job guide, lockheed manual, or just common knowledge? I am a maintainer at a facility were the users want to leak check tanks with LE off and I said not a good idea, because will distort wings and then will have trouble installing LE Please help.

A question came up around the squadron the other day. Let’s say we have five CDS bundles loaded, but we’re only going to drop two on this pass. When we choose the CDS flap setting, do we use the column for 5 bundles or 2? The numbers aren’t important. The question really is… Do we use the number of bundles loaded or to be dropped? Most importantly, why? Keep in mind, looking at the CDS Flap setting chart, more bundles require additional flaps. This means that more bundles require a lower deck angle. I have my own opinions on these, but I’ll keep them to myself so I don’t bias the responses.

My situation is as follows. Aircrew takes a AC,MC,C-130E,H, any of the sort, up for an FCF. I am told that in order to op ck the prop brake, local policy, no one can give me a tech data ref, but local policy is to cage the engine at 180FL. If the propeller rotates backwards it is immediately a write up requiring a flush. OK, my argument to this is that if the FCF is op cking an emergency procedure then why is it immediately a write up at 180 knots? Especially since no airspeed is given in the -1 or FCF ck list to feather the prop at. I tend to think that if the aircraft slows as the -1 says to 160 or less to get the prop to stop counter rotating, then once the pro…

Hello my name is Maarten, I am a Belgian last year high school student: aircraft technology. For my graduation I have to write a paper about the eingines of the C-130 Hercules. I've found a lot of information about the Allison T56 but it's more difficult to find the wright information about the Rolls Royce AE2100 engine. I need to know the differences between those two engines so I can compare them with each other. Do you know websites I have to visit or can you tell me somthing about those engines, any kind of information is welcome. If someone can help me with it I will be most thankful. Grtz Maarten

**The message below was sent to me from one of our departments, any help will b e appreciated...** 3842360-1 In the end of the assembly our Engineering detected that to install this material we need a Torsion Shaft (we don't know the PN). The assembly was made in accordance with the attached document: "Wheel and Shaft Assembly (Shaft Repair) due to damage or abnormal wear to internal spline area of shaft": "Install plug to depth shown. Identify wheel and shaft assembly by adding (-789) below the part number etched on the shaft. NOTE: It will be necessary to use a shortened torsion shaft in place of existing shaft at final assembly on the engine if the prec…

Hey all, I’m hoping some old Herk operators can help me locate some long lost information. It happens from time to time that an aircraft is away from home station and qualified maintenance when the old prop low oil light comes on while on the ground. This scenario usually has but just a few possible outcomes. The FE checks the servicing and… 1. The prop is a couple quarts low due to a slow permissible leak or lack of proper servicing. In the end, the FE services it up and off they go. 2. The prop is a couple quarts low and leaking beyond acceptable limits. They’re broke and require a prop/seal change by qualified maintenance. 3. Surprise! …

We are using Combined Altitude Radar Altimeter (CARA), model: AN/APN-232(V). After switching it on 'FAIL' indication shows on ground in both the indicators (Pilot side & Nav side) for about 30-45 sec. After that period it become normal. In air, above 1000 ft both the indicators fluctuate with all indications (RT FAIL). But, at the same time TCAS system operation remain normal. For this prob, we have done the fol troubleshooting: a. CARA R/T, Height Indicators, Antennas are changed. b. Continuity of wiring was measured. But still we are facing the same problem. It will be appreciated if anybody is having any other solution.

One thing I've always been curious about but never asked. On the H models why is the left side skin above the wheel well not painted? Is is because of a heat problem with the APUs and using a different type of metal there?

Got an interesting call the other day from Warner Robins concerning 64-14859. As most of us know this plane started out as a HC-130, then to a EC-130, and now it is a C-130E. The problem that Robins had was that the RH Horizontal Leading Edge had extra exterior plating on the L/E of the structure. I finally got them to send some pics and sure enough this exterior plating runs the full length of the L/E. They said this L/E is from a Talon. They didn\'t specify which MDS. I know it isn\'t from the Talon II, but what about the T1? They were telling me it is a Flare deflector?? I looked in both the 1C-130H-4 and 1C-130(M)H-4 and the part numbers cross reference each other. …

First of all I d like to thank you all about the usefull posts in this forum . Many times i found answers among your answers . So now is my time to search about an opinion in a problem that seems out of Technical Publication . During the last months we faced continuous external leakage in propellers sometimes in between barrel s area and most often at blade lip s . In all cases .... we follow exactly inspections at teflon area , measurements in shank and teflon , bolts and barrel holes , even the build up measurements ....and so on . All the measurements and ispections founded according to Technical Publication .... ( for examble teflon strip over 5.560 till …

Hi Few days back, when i was taking Off, while breaking ground, master fire warning light came ON along with No 2 fire handle light with audible warning Horn and went Off after 2-3 seconds. all engine parameters were found to be normal and light stayed ON for only 2-3 seconds and went off. Press to test circuit was found satisfactory with no visible signs/ indications of fire. We landed back safely without switching OFF the engine through a shorter landing pattern. Request your observations, advice and suggestions on actions taken and what other actions we should have taken please. Thanks

Anybody out there no where to get a breakdown of what each card does in the RTP? I have tried, to no avail, to find a back shop to in the eq/to xref using ETIMS but had no luck. We are just now getting some tails with this system and the 206a and standing up an ECM shop for the first time. Any advice or tips with these new systems sure would hook us up!

I am a civilian and never worked on a C-130. I have an interesting concept for a new cargo pallet - where we can offload the equivalent of 5 pallets at one time - good for quick offload. Who in the hell do I talk to to see if the design works well and how do I sell it to the DoD?

NVG Compatible Glass

I know that some, perhaps all of the MC-130E\'s had new windshields installed for improved compatibility with Night Vision Goggles (NVGs). The original glass for the E models had transmissivity losses in the light spectrum of the NVGs. Does anybody know how many other platforms have been modified; and is NVG compatible glass available from Lockheed as part of the build for the J-models? John
