  1. I was taught to set it to just below field elevation right before takeoff and during touch and gos, for the comfort of the crew and paxs. During climb I would reset it based on cruise altitude and the ability of the airframe to hold pressure. I did one other little trick to keep the under flight deck electronics cool, I would crank up the cabin altitude so the outflow valve would be passing air, if required based on airframe leakage.
  2. No but I do recall the great eggburgers at the base ops snack bar.
  3. There is or was a chart in the front of the -1-1 that would allow the FE to determine which gauge was wrong, I used it all the time before placing the write-up in the 781. What happened to it? I too trusted the fuel flow first, plus it could also be verified with the fuel quanity indicators over a set period.
  4. I recall it was 20 combat missions (O1A) per Air medal, or 35 combat support missions (O1B) per air medal, and yes a mission could mean more than one sortie.
  5. Yes this has been discussed here many times on the old forum. I collected a bunch of info on the event and created a Yahoo group to hold what I have. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/637789/

Bob, prior to ctrl-c do a left click highlight of the area you wish to transfer, or ctrl-a if you wish to copy the whole page.
  7. I never had a problem with one opening in the pocket, but I was never able to keep it sharp, I still have it and I still can't keep an edge on it except for the u blade its still razor sharp.
  8. By the way, the C-7 Caribou used flight engineers and no loadmaster. Sam I was at the school house when the AF had the C-7s dumped on them. The AF looked at the current classes of FM and those with recip expererence were reassigned to the C7. There were some unhappy guys at Sewart.
  9. I went through the school house in 66 at Sewart we were Flight Mechs then, I think the realignment of the enlisted flying AFSC's was in 72, we were called Flight Engineers before that as the 130 check list changed in the late 60's. Some of the older guys replied FE to the check list but the school taught FM. The late 70's brought about all FE's going to performance school.
  10. Last I heard Kenny died. I was TDY with him doing flare drops at Williams, seems like we had 2 or 3 birds, anyway we were tossing down some cold ones and a bar maid came up and sniffed his neck and said, "what do you have on that smells so good?" Kenny leaned back and said, "A hardon but I didn't think you could smell it". He was a fairly decent guitar picker or was I drunk when he played.
  11. Back in the 1960's heard a story that back during the cold war SAC built big runways in out of the way places to land the BUFFs after the big one. Could this place be one of those? I remember flying over a runway out in the middle of no-where Thailand back in 67-68.
  12. I'm glad we had navs onboard, more than once a GCI site would get busy and forget about us trashhaulers. If it wasn't for the nav we would have hit the mountians and we would all be dust.
  13. Oh, yeah, Bob, spell check shows that there are TWO "E"s in injunear"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LMAO!!!!!!!!!! I don't need no stinking spell check. checked/set out

    You are a brave man!
  15. Injunears are highly trained and knowledgable, looking at the newer Hercs it has taken a big ass computer to replace us. Us switcheflippers could always cool you strapstrechers down with the turn of a knob or the flip of a switch. Checked set/out
  16. Kudos, the 61st was my first outfit as a green FE back in 1966.
  17. It is as it is because that's the way it works best. It allows for an engine to operate at constant speed in flight at different air speeds, power settings and flight levels.
  18. It is at the Main Gate at Little Rock and here is the plaque.
  19. I remember the "Fu*k You" lizards, that was always good for a laugh at a new guys expense.
  20. It seems to me we used to start #2 first if we had that kind of problem, but this was back in the 60's and 70's

That same kind of crap happens in the civilian world. Atfter the AF I worked on medical xray and the last thing the big companies want to spend money on is documentation.
