JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq -- After 47 years of service, a C-130E completed its last combat mission while in Iraq. Upon reaching its total aircraft hours of more than 33,220, the Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. aircraft was retired. "It's a very sad day when an aircraft retires," said Capt. Bradley Allen, 777th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Unit officer in charge. "A lot of people over many years have put in hard work and countless hours to maintain the aircraft - to see this one go, especially since it is a good flyer, it is a sad day." Although days away from retirement, tail 9813 remained vital to the mission as its last few hours of flight were spent …

From the Air Force Times: The performance of the Air Force’s new C-130J in intra-theater lift in places like Afghanistan is so remarkable that the service may replace the engines of its older-model Hercules aircraft to increase their fuel efficiency, the service’s second highest ranking uniformed leader said Wednesday. “Throughout the single-command area of operations, we have prioritized the use of newer, more efficient C-130Js for intra-theater airlift over older, less efficient C-130 models,†said Gen. Philip Breedlove, Air Force vice chief, at the U.S. Army & U.S. Air Force Energy Forum in Arlington, Va. “In fact, this difference is significant enou…

http://www.wtoc.com/clip/11924892/165th-airlift-wing-receives-new-aircraft Saw this on line. Savannah getting H-3's. First one from Peterson 94-7321 What are they going to do with Savannah's H's? Is the AD AF shutting down all its C-130Assoiciate units? At one time there were associate units at Keesler Cheyenne, Peterson and Elmendorf, that I know of. Also I heard if the Associate unit at Pete closed, AFRC would keep the extra herks for their MAFFS mission. Guess not? Bob

I'm still a little confused here... OK Citys' 78s went to Pittsburg. Where did Pittsburgs' airplanes go? Nashville's 89-90s either became Gunship/Talons or went to Niagara. Where did Niagaras' go? As far as I can tell, the 440th totally relocated to Pope, but did not pick up any airframes. I was under the impression that they were supposed to get more. I understand St. Joe's airplanes are supposed to start moving to Little Rock ANG. Are they getting Mansfields?

Can anyone tell me what the thin horizontal bar above the nose and below the center windscreen is? Is this a landing light? I just viewed your picture of the C-130J in Iceland and it also shows this horizontal bar above the nose. I am building a plastic model of the Blue Angels C-130 Fat Albert and I noticed this bar appearing on the current "Fat Albert" but not on the older versions. KarlK

Is "Ghost riders in the sky" still the great song among Gunship folks these days? I remember being in the company of some crazy S.O.Bs. in the NCO club at Kirtland , as soon as Ghost riders began to play (Johnny Cash version) these dudes started hooten and hollerin like a pack of mad dogs while standing damn near at full attention while hoisting their pitchers of beer all the while as the song played from start to finish. These boys were in town with one of their birds for an appt at the refurb shop. Helluva bunch of good folks though! Little did I know that years later later I would be joining those folks.

You Might be a Crew Chief IF..... You've ever said, "Oh yes sir, it's supposed to look like that." You've ever sucked LOX to cure a hangover. You know what JP4/JP5 tastes like. You've ever used a piece of safety wire as a toothpick. You've ever had to say, "My boots are still black!" (or ever spray-painted them black) You have ever used soot from the tailpipe to blacken your boots. You believe the aircraft has a soul. You talk to the aircraft. The only thing you know about any city is where the good bars are. You know more about your coworkers than you do about your own family. You can't figure out why maintenanc…

U.S. Air Forces in Europe Public Affairs 3/27/2009 - RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (AFNS) -- American and Polish airmen delivered the first of five refurbished C-130E Hercules military transport planes and spare parts March 24 to the Polish air force at Powidz Air Base, Poland. "It's a great day for them to celebrate the arrival of the Hercules. It's vital to them being able to -- own their own -- organically pick up and go," said Air Force Maj. Gen. William A. Chambers, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe director of air and space operations. "They're one of our allies who are very willing to go," he said. "Whether it is Afghanistan or Iraq, they've been alongside the…

All, My 16 year old daughter has the following assignment for school and would appreciate some help from those who are veterans of the Vietnam era. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Bruce She will need your age during the war, sex and a statement to the following question: "If you were drafted into a war you did not believe your country should be fighting, and you could not claim exempt or conscientious objector status, would you choose to leave the country illegally, knowing that it may mean you can never come back, or to fight in the war, knowing that you will be made to kill people and may get seriously injured or die?"

Saw this on the Australian news this morning. All RAAF Hercules aircraft grounded Updated: 06:09, Wednesday September 17, 2008 The Defence Force has grounded its fleet of Hercules aircraft after an unusual fault prompted an emergency landing. A Defence spokeswoman has told Fairfax newspapers the fault was detected on Monday night during a training flight near Richmond, north-west of Sydney. She says a plane declared an emergency after its crew detected a fault with the nose-wheel. The crew called a mayday but landed safely at the Richmond Base 20 minutes later. Following the incident, all 24 of the RAAF\'s Hercules transport planes were grounded for all n…

I just got back from AATTC where there was a Belgian 130 and a German C-160. The Germans seemed to know what they were doing, but since it wasn\'t a herk I\'m not familiar with the airframe. With the Belgians I could tell what they were doing. They run things more like our Navy, where they have airframe, powerplant, and avionics people. They don\'t have a zillion backshop specialists like the Air Force does. I watched two of their people change a pair of nose tires faster than I could even get the required TO\'s together. While the herks were out flying we talked about the planes and they seem to really know their stuff. They said there are now only 10 herks in the…
