The book is titled "Runway Visions" and I do not have it right here in front of me so I can't give you the author, however, he was a C-130 pilot out of CCK and the book is more or less his recollections of his flying activities in and out of Vietnam. I haven't finished reading it yet, but early on he speaks of the engine start procedure and specifically mentions "turning #2 engine" first. Is that a typo? I recall ALWAYS starting #3 engine first. Any ideas out there?

Emmy Award Winning Production company is producing a brand new TV series about Extreme Vehicles! To contrast the mega machines we film with, we show very small vehicles coming to untimely ends – and we’re interested in dropping a very small vehicle out of an airplane and having it smash on the ground. Ideally, this would take place in the desert vicinity of Las Vegas, on or around Feb 11th, although other locations may work as well. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact us: [email protected] This series will air on a major US cable network.

Thanks to the many of you who responded to our earlier ad - as it turns out, a smaller aircraft, such as a SkyVan, will best suit our needs. If you or anyone you know can supply such an aircraft for our Extreme Vehicle TV Series, please contact: [email protected] The show will air on a major US cable network.

Bob or anyone, do you know what the 2 C-130 tail numbers are that are stored behind the SLEP hangers at Lockheed? I see them as I drive down So. Cobb but can't see any numbers. One has the wings and vert fin removed and the other looks complete. They are due east of the big B-1 building or 33d 55' 47.13''N x 84d 31' 27.81" W. Bill

U.S. Marine Corps plans to convert KC-130J tankers into gunships By Stephen Trimble Flight International 02/04/09 The U.S. Marine Corps has decided to convert some Lockheed Martin KC-130J tankers into combination surveillance platforms and gunships. The renamed KC-130J "Harvest Hawk" would retain the wing-mounted refuelling pods and tanker mission, but add a new targeting sensor and a 30mm cannon, the USMC says. Marine commanders have issued an urgent request for the Harvest Hawk capability, believing that the KC-130J could be used as more than simply a refuelling system for helicopters and tiltrotors. "If we can get more utility out of the tan…

Pulled this off Yahoo Mike LONDON – British military planes entered Libyan air space to rescue oil workers and others from desert locations Saturday in a daring and secret mission meant to save those unable to flee escalating violence. The C-130 Hercules planes, carrying Britons and other nationals, safely landed in Malta after picking up the civilians south of the eastern Libyan port of Benghazi, Defense Secretary Liam Fox said. The rescue mission was bold because few planes have been able to fly through Libyan air space. It was not immediately clear if it was a British special forces mission, but the government has not ruled out using the SAS to evacuate Libya…

I\'m just throwing this out to see what happens. I\'ve noticed since I started looking into some of these on- line groups that a lot, if not all, units had identifying patches and unit slogans and so forth. I was assigned to Pope in Jan. of 1964, crossed from B-47 to C-130 and in a matter of weeks started TDY. My B-4 bag was my bestest friend! I was hardly ever in N.C. Was eventually assigned permanently to CCK in 1966,if you\'re old enough, you know the rest of the story. We never had any unit patches, slogans, or stuff. Am I missing something or did the A.F. finally get around to realizing that we were there? Any thoughts?...Chris

A few updates 74-2072 is at Robins, supposed to be for the Afghans. CT now has at least 2 H's 74-1667 and 74-2134. MT has 1 H 74-1671 OH now has 4 H's; 2 from AK 82-0054 and 0056, one from NY 83-0488, and one from Dobbins 81-0629. Sheppard now has 4 H model trainers 74-1673, 1676, 1684, 2130. This is a strange one; Dobbins is giving up its 81 H models, well maintained with only about 11000 hours on them. So far 81-0628 is at LRF ANG, 81-0629 is at Mansfield, 81-0631 is at LRF ANG and they are getting 50th AS rejects, so far 92-0552 and 93-1039. The 50th H's have around 13000 hours on them and obviously not as well maintained as the older 81 models. The troops in Ma…

Could anyone clear up my confusion about USCG Herks. I just read a good article in AFM about the USCG. They are getting 13 or 14 C-27's. An Admiral said that was enough aircraft for three CG Air Stations. The article said the first HC-27's would go to Sacramento. Right now they have 4 CGAS's with HC-144's Mobile, Corpus, Miami and Otis. They have 5 CGAS's with Herks. Elizabeth City with J's and Kodiak getting J's and three with H's Clearwater, Barbers Point, and Sacramento. I know 7 Herks are going to the USFS. What about all the other H's? Are the HC-27's replacing the Herks or are they opening up new bases? Would HC-27's have the range required to operate out of Bar…

I am over sixty and the Armed Forces think I\'m too old to track down terrorists. (You can\'t be older than 42 to join the military.) They\'ve got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year-olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn\'t be able to join a military unit until you\'re at least 35. For starters: Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy. Young guys haven\'t lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. \"My back hurts! I …

USAF Axes C-130 AMP Upgrades By DAVE MAJUMDAR The U.S. Air Force has effectively canceled the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) Phase II for the C-130 Hercules, allocating no money in the 2012 budget request nor in the Pentagon’s Future Years Defense Plan (FYDP). The Boeing-led program was to have improved communications, navigation and air-traffic man¬agement systems on special-mission C-130s, in¬cluding EC-130s, LC-130s and most MC-130s. Without the modifications, the planes will not meet stringent international and domestic air-traf¬fic control standards due to go into effect around 2020. The service had previously reduced the number of planes to be…

Being out of the loop for so long, it is hard to keep up on the USAF changes. There have been lots of changes in the Herk community lately. Associate units at Cheyenne, Elmendorf and Pete have closed and their UE reduced to 8. 327 AS at LRF has closed or almost closed and the last I heard, they went from 17 to 2 Herks. The Guard and Reserve have been shuffling Herks to put similar model Herks in the same units. The older H2's have started to retire to the Boneyard. They are threatening to close the 95 AS and 2 AS at Pope again, and I just read a proposal to try to bring C-17's to Pitt to replace the Herks. From what I have been able to f…
