A few questions, hopefully someone can enlighten me! 1. When did the mission change from Volant Solo to Commando Solo? yes I know when AFSOC took over, but when exactly? 2. Dash one was LTM 1EC-130E(RH)-1. What did the (RH) stand for? Aircraft mod was Rivet Rider (I thought). Thanks, Dave Mason

More than 40 years ago the Air Force created Rapid Area Maintenance (RAMS) teams to do depot level maintenance and modifications in the field. After it became too dangerous for civilain contractor teams in Vietnam the Air Force restructured the teams with blue suiters and created the Combat Logistics Support Squadrons (CLSS). In December 1967 the Air Force activated the 2955th CLSS to support Robins ALC. The 2955th were known for projects like PACER JOIN, recovery of the C-141 from Iwakuni, Japan and its noteworty accomplishments in DESERT STORM. In 1992 the Air Force renamed the 2955th to the 653rd CLSS and continued supporting the warfigter. If you look at the 653rd …

For more years than I care to remember, I took the sound of a C-130's engine and prop for granted. Well, now I really miss it. Although this video is of an Electra's D501D-13's starting up, the sound is still there. I still look up whenever one of NOAA's P-3's from MacDill AFB flies over. Also check out a link there to a Connie starting up its R-3350's. Music to my ears! Click here: YouTube - Lockheed Electra start up Don R.

I was at Naha from June 65 till Nov 66. I was an asst. C/C on a c-130. 51 st and 21 st. We had a typhoon that was suppose to hit and one plane that wasn't in shape to fly. It had just got back from IRAN. All the hangers were full so a flight crew was gonna keep it headed into the wend and fly it on the ground. We towed it out in front of base ops and started to refuel it and all of a sudden a row of rivits popped out and fuel started spilling on the ground from the front of the wing to the back. The fire trucks were on us in just a matter of seconds. We got an empty fuel truck and started the defuel fast as we could while the fire dept put foam and water on the sp…

While my mind is on the old style air drop systems...Is there anyone on this board that remembers this accident at Pope AFB? It was late 1968 or early 69 that a new airdrop/rigging system with cables and pullys attached to FS 245 and running aft was being tested. It was the wing commanders aircraft and was assigned to the 777Th TAS as I remember. I saw the setup since it was parked next to my bird prior to launch. The acft. RTB shortly after T.O. with firetrucks screaming and it taxied back to the spot. After all the brass had their look I was allowed on the acft. and cables and parts of 245 were everywhere inside the acft. As far as I know that was the only test of this …

I came across this website (photobucket.com) and found some pics of a C-130 crash. It looks like hill and desert terrain. The N number is N135FF with a large 82 on the tail. I cannot make out the script on the forward pilots side of the acft. I hope some one can help with information. I would like to know the model of the acft, year, company name, date and details of the crash, location, etc, survivors or not and so on.

Commander's call at CCK http://vietnamairlift.com/airmedal.html "Normal short field landing criteria are different from combat essential landing criteria. If your mission was high priority (combat essential), thinner safety margins were acceptable." http://vietnamairlift.com/katum.html

Sadly, this month the Philippine AF has broken up 3946, the first L-100 produced. It had immense historical value for us in the Herc community. Its first fligh on 4/20/64 lasted more than 24 hours! It's too bad Lockheed didn't take any steps to preserve it. It would've looked nice sitting in front of the hangar where it was built, painted in the red and white Lockheed demonstrator colors. You can check it out in the C-130 Database section. Below are some photos from my friend, Joseph Simon. Some of you ex-Transafrik people may remember his as a Filipino mechanic in Luanda. Don R.

I just realized I posted this in technical! Well technically they are nice views!! I was looking at flight deck pics and came across these of the clouds and approaching Taegu Korea (I think). I would move them to General or Historical, but don't know how! Thanks for looking, Ken

I know the center seat position on the first Herks was called the Flight Mechanic. What other aircraft had actual Flight Mechs? I remember the Air Force discontinued FM's a while back. Anyone remember when? What are/were the differences between an FE and FM (and FCC)? Performance qual would be one I know. Just curious, too much time on my hands (not really!). Thanks!

Lets see if there is anybody else here who remembers seeing this or who knows the whole story. Back in 1990 at Navy Jubail in Saudi (man what a packed that place was to get into) we saw a non- US herk with one wing tip split wide open from the tip into the outboard tank. Only info I ever got on it was from a fuel pit guy that said a helo hover taxied right into the plane. No idea if it was ever repaired or what happened to it. I dont know what country it belonged to but I want to say it was one of the old English empire country's. Dan

Anybody know if the Navy kept the forward cargo door on their F's operable or did they seal/"disable" them as the USAF did?

Managed to finally find one online. I have been looking for years. Found it on E-Bay and snapped it up. Army Outfitters in New York had it. Now all I have to do is see if I remember how to use it. Probably need to find a Form F online.
