Four Horsemen 1 2

Hi folks! As a C-130 pilot for the Royal Netherlands Air Force I have started researching the great heritage of this amazing airplane. I have managed to collect most books ever written on the C-130 and I\'m looking into the lesser known corners of the C-130 past (e.g. the Credible Sport project). One of the things that caught my interest is the existence of the \"Four Horsemen\" demonstration team. While doing the obligatory \"google\" research I found out that video/footage of the Four Horsemen exists. Can anyone of you confirm the existence of this footage and is there any way to get a copy of it? Or can someone at least point me in the correct direction? Thank…

A-models and early B-models had a cargo door of the left side just aft of the crew entry door. From what I have read, there were problems with them coming open inflight and causing several crashes and were sealed up. Does anyone have any pictures of them opened up?

C-130A 50041 c/n [cn]3068[/cn] visited one of the Royal Air Force bases in Singapore, RAF Changi (now Singapore Airport) in January 1963. It was accompanying a US Navy WV-2Q 135749 which at the time was carrying a tailcode of 'KR2'. This 'Willie Victor' was later shot down whilst serving with VQ-1 in 1969 by North Korean Mig-17's as it was carrying out a patrol along the North Korean coast. The 31 crew all perished. The C-130A 50041 at the time looked like a C-130B-II version, although I see your records still show it as a standard C-130A. It had Hamilton Standard 4 bladed props, the extra large underwing tanks (ECM pods) and had a radio aerial from mid-fuselage to tail.…

"Note to self: 5' tail-to-nose clearance is too much. If you really need a buddy start to work on the first try, pull in tight so the nose of your airplane is 5' UNDER the tail." For the rest see http://http://vietnamairlift.com/windmilltaxi.html Alan

While looking at the list of missing pics of Bob Daley's gallerys, I can't remember the fate of 56-0477 c/n [cn]3085[/cn]. I am having a hard time believing that I don't remember it or what happened to it especially since I was involved in Blind Bats etc. during the time it was lost. Was it a Naha bird or was it from Tachikawa? I'm assuming Naha, and thats why I can't figure out why I don't remember it! If any of you have the complete story on it, I would like to hear it. Thanks, Ken

As long as I have been a member of this forum, I don't remember any mention of the war in Bosnia. My question is, did any C-130's take part in the conflict? If so, I think it would be very interesting to hear some of your stories about what part you guys played. Also, if any of you have any pictures of your trips in and out and especially any base or off-base pictures would be great!! Also, was there any medal or commendation made for your participation? I would find it hard to believe that the mighty Herk wasn't involved! I remember watching the news when it looked like the first plane into Baghdad was a C-130!!! Thanks in advance for your input and pictures, …

RVN Dirt Field! 1 2

I am trying to remember/find the name of a dirt field in Vietnam that was "kinda" hairy to get into! You landed on an upslope and from the unloading area on the opposing end a C-130 would go out of sight and then come over the ridge in full reverse! You landed one direction (on the uphill slope) and took off the other direction. Anybody remember the name?!! Thanks, Clod

Perhaps an M16 and one clip of ammo, or? I always figured the 45 was to do yourself when that clip ran out. I have often wondered what the Air Force was thinking? Or, were they?

While stationed at CCK my room-mates acft. 62-1854 was shot up real bad at Quan Loi RVN and was rebuilt and flown out later. It seemed like several months, but I am not sure. I found the pics in the gallery. More under (3818) His name was John Rosenfeld--From Denver Ken Carlson http://herkybirds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=86&stc=1&d=1234929383

I know the center seat position on the first Herks was called the Flight Mechanic. What other aircraft had actual Flight Mechs? I remember the Air Force discontinued FM's a while back. Anyone remember when? What are/were the differences between an FE and FM (and FCC)? Performance qual would be one I know. Just curious, too much time on my hands (not really!). Thanks!

I went down to Eglin AFB at the beginning of the year to do some pressurization testing on the the first AC-130J aircraft. When heading out of the area to a buddy's house over in Pensacola, we passed by the USAF Armament Museum. It wasn't open, and we were heading to Pensacola for a behind the scenes tour of the National Naval Aviation Museum there(friend is a volunteer there in the restoration hangar). Any way we stopped at the Armament Museum, so I could take some photos of the aircraft they have on display outside. One of the aircraft there was an AC-130. At the time, for whatever reason I didn't read the placard for the aircraft, nor made any connection to th…

I was at Naha June 69-Jun 71. Was asst. crew chief on 55-023, and crew chief on 56-469. Pulled TDYs to Ubon religiously starting in Oct. 69 until the Wing deactivated. Along with Charlie Agar, Jay Green, Terry Shockler, John Roy, and others. I returned to Ubon with the Spectre gunships and crewed 54-1623 and 56-469 (again). Agar and Green followed me back there shortly after I arrived. Got to fly the "flagpole" a couple of times and played I.O. once. Had to go to Cam Rahn and TanSon Nhut when planes broke there couple of times. Sorry but I don't remember any of the flight crew names, although there was this one engineer who was rather short I got along famously wit…

I was stationed at Ft. Eustis VA in Spring of 1971. I was on a C-130 at Patrick Henry airport and it had been spraying Agent Orange. Anybody have any way to find out information about tail numbers and other information about these planes? Any help would be appreciated. You can either post a reply here or send an email to me at docbarnhill<at>yahoo.com Thanks ahead of time, Doc Barnhill

I was thinking about old times again the other day, and started wondering why I don't see any posts by guys from Tachikawa!! I used to hang around with some of them when we would meet up at CRB. This is when I was on A Models from Naha 1967-1969. At the time the C-130 inputs were A Models from Tachi and Naha, and B Models from PI. I don't remember if the Tachi birds left CRB before I left Naha or not! I do know that they and the Naha A Models were not at CRB when I started going back to there from CCK in April 69. I guess I am probably confusing people with my dumb questions, but I guess the real question is ---are there any Tachi troops here??? Thanks, Ken

I'm looking for any info on the 1 Apr 1997 crash at Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This is what I do know: Unit/Pilot/tail #/landed long, fast, & incorrect flap setting/already went around twice/ran off runway killing 3 crew members. I remember going over this accident in AMIC but can't find anything but general articles on the web. It's for a human factors class and would like to have a little more info before I press on with the writing. Thanks in advance for any input you may provide. Mike

I noticed there was some stuff missing or in the wrong place on the Herkepedia. I mentioned it to Joey on the Facebook C-130 Group but at the time didn't remember what I had noticed. Here is a rundown of the original C-130 units: 463rd Troop Carrier Wing - 772nd, 773rd, 774th (joined by 29th TCS at Clark) Was originally at Ardmore, OK, then moved to Sewart around 1958. Transferred to Langley in 1963. Went to the Philippines in December 1965 - Wing Hq and 772nd and 774th at Mactan, 773rd and 29th at Clark. 314th TCW - 50th, 61st and 62nd. Based at Sewart AFB, TN. Second to get C-130s. Wing and 50th transferred to PACAF in December 1965. 317th TCW - 39th, 40th and…
