A friend of mine shared with me, so I share with you an extensive search library of Vietnam history. As usual, some history documentation is factual, and some is 'rumor', but dig and scratch through the documentation that is available, and some stories have a real beginning and a real ending... I can't remember exactly what the justification was for the weird arrangement at Naha, with the airplanes and maintenance personnel assigned to the 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing and the aircrews and operations personnel assigned to the 6315th Operations Group. It had something to do with AFM 66-1, and was related to the 51st FIW being the host unit on the base at Naha. As far as I know, the 6315th was on the only C-130 troop carrier group. All of the TAC C-130 bases had full wings, complete with Headquarters, OMS and FMS. It may have had to do with when the 21st TCS transferred to Naha in 1958 and equipped with C-130s. Friends of mine I knew at Pope after I got there in 1…

Nice to be back on the updated & new looking board. Just a little news from the hangar about our C97G Strat project. We got our 20ton crane working & got to put it back in operation again. We moved our 3 spare 4360 engines back inside the hangar & the low timer one we installed at the #3 position on the wing. We also have 4 spare props we are checking out & will install the best one. New used cargo doors & ramps have also been swaped out. We also have done a few gear retractions & our dedicated membership workforce got some good training. Progress is good & now we have the C54 in the hangar also for some well deserved maintenance & inspecti…

KC-130R Escorted to Final Flight November 21, 2008 Marine Corps News|by LCpl. Tyler J. Hlavac MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FUTENMA, OKINAWA, Japan — Aircraft lot number 160622 had a good run during its 30-year Marine Corps lifespan, but nothing, not even the KC-130R, lasts forever. Nick Dicandia experienced the beginning and the end of the craft while serving as an aircrew member aboard the final flight of the same KC-130R he served on during its maiden flight 30 years ago. Dicandia, a contract field team supervisor working for the Lockheed Martin aeronautics company, is currently assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, aboard Marine Corps Ai…

A friend\'s son has made this website as a tribute to his Father who participated in these early HALO tests. The final jump on 16 December 1963 from 43,500 feet took the world\'s record away from the Russians. The website lists the names of the Special Forces and Air Force personnel who made the jumps as well as the members of the crew. The C-130B used for the jumps was 62-3487. You should also take a look at the article from Parachutist Magazine. There\'s a link for that. http://www.vistech.net/users/edman/halo/default.html

In the spring 1970, I was Port Duty Officer for the 8th Aerial Port Squadron at Tan Son Nhut AB. Our Korean allies had a dedicated C-130 (USAF crew, but mission dictated by Koreans) Flight 642 which flew weekly from TSN to Qui Nhon AB. This flight was handled completely by the Koreans from load planning to loading and unloading. I was in the flight line operations shack when I heard over the crash net that Flight 642 had declared an emergency for “fuel fumes in the cockpit†and was returning to TSN. I hustled down to Charlie Row to meet the aircraft, to be confronted by a very angry USAF Load Master who wanted to know “who in the hell put a motorcycle under the bagga…

Several of us were on the tow crew on swing shift and got off a little early and 5 of us went to town. We were down in the hotel distrect talking when an MP came around the corner and saw us. We all took off in different directions. One hid under a car, 2 went in a hotel and the momason wouldn\'t let the MP,s go in with their boots on. One went up some outside stairs and was gonna jump but got hung up on something and he was upside down he got cought. I took out running and could see some construction ditches and I knew if I made there I could get away. The MP hollered \"Halt Ot I\'ll Shoot\"! when he chamberer a round in his 45 it sounded like thunder and he al…

We are looking at painting one of our C-130s (4529) with a \"Vintage\" paint job and I was looking at the \"old\" B model pictures and noticed that several were missing. Is that the result of the \"copyright\" issue a while back? I am specifically looking for a picture of a B model in the LAC 3533 to LAC 3650 range with the Coast Guard orange nose but with an all white tail(?). We want to try and recreate the old-style CG shield shown on that one. I\'d also like the story behind the all-white tail! Oh, and where are those pictures taken? The background is the same for several of the birds but a lot of us that been around can\'t place it... Thanks for your help! …

Hey, I was just channel surfing while recovering from rotator cuff surgery and stopped to watch Shockwave on the History Channel. This episode had about a 10-15 minute segment on Credible Sport. Had some nice video clips of takeoffs and of course the crash as well as computer generated graphics. This is episode #30 and will be rerun at 0100 CST.

Today is Saturday, November 22. Monday, November 24, is the 44th anniversary of the greatest C-130 mission ever flown. There is a page about it on my web site at www.sammcgowan.com/dragon.html but if you want to read an indepth account of the mission, go to http://www-cgsc.army.mil/carl/resources/csi/odom/odom.asp#map7. There are a few discrepancies in the article. For one thing, it doesn\'t mention the 778th TCS although most of the crews involved were from it. It also gives the impression tht Col. Burgess Gradwell of 322nd Air Division was flying the lead airplane. Actually, he was the mission commander and was riding in the lead, but Capt. Warren \"Huey\" Long was the …

Does anyone out there have any photos of 64-0550 (4045) @ Naples when it broke off one of the main gear assemblies (left, I think) after a screwed up landing? This was in the late 70\'s or early 80\'s. It sat there for a long time before flying out. All I remember of the crew were the co-pilot was Bill Beale & the FE was Billy Legg. I had a line on some pics a couple of years ago, but it didn\'t work out. Thanks in advance. Don R.

This picture of our 1st. Sgt. Msgt. Galloway. He lived in the barracks with us until his wife came over and then he moved downtown! Gary Levesque and I took over his room---We had a sink and a refrigerator! We stacked the beds three high so we had more floor space for a carpet etc. Nobody ever moved in and took the top bunk! It was about 3ft. from the ceiling!! I would post these pics all in one post, but I can\'t seem to go back and forth from Photobucket! I do have some more that i will post later! Ken

Does anyone have a picture of VR-54\'s ramp sill that had \"Laissez les bons temps rouler\" painted on it. When we stood the squadron up we had the first couple of ramps painted that way. Of course the Wing had a fit and made us remove it...drug our feet doing it but I am hoping someone got pictures of it. Anyone stationed there now? Thanks!

On 23rd September 1966, a training flight for RAAF C-130A aircraft A97-207 of No.36 Squadron almost ended in disaster when the aircraft entered an inverted spin. In 1995, I met the Flight Engineer and Loadmaster from that flight and they both wrote their recollections of the incident for me. Their original paper documents have been retyped with signatures cut and pasted and saved as Microsoft Office Word Docs in my space at http://cid-bd39e7fe1464ac00.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public The undated photograph file is of A97-207 at RAAF Base Townsville. I am not a pilot or a tech so I can\'t make any comment on those matters mentioned. I present their storie…

I was looking at some pics today on the web and came across some of the test bed bird that was at Dobbins in the 80s--N130X--in one of the pictures there is a C-130 parked next to it and it seems to have the HF antenna that is presently on the J models. My eyes may be deceiving me but I didn\'t think that this was something that was around in 1985. Just curious. Oh and lastly I did not take the picture, the good man\'s name is posted on the bottom left. http://www.airliners.net/photo/Lockheed/Lockheed%20L-100-20/HTTB%20Hercules%20(L-382E)/0199863/L/&width=1024&height=659&sok=&photo_nr=3&prev_id=0764729&next_id=NEXTID
