Last week one of the guys that I met on this forum came to Montana for his second visit! Chris and his wife Mary have become good friends with my wife and I and we look forward to seeing them every year!! (I may have to go to Wisconsin to see them next year)! I'm going to try Chris!!! These two pictures are taken near the summit of Beartooth Pass. I think the elevation there is around 10,281 ft. This is on the way from my home in Columbus to the North East entrance to Yellowstone Park. Silver Gate MT. We had a good time and Chris told me some more "war stories" of course I had none to offer!!!! I think it would be great to be able to meet all of y…

Came across this site. Thought it might prove interesting to some. Seems to be more about the boots on the ground grunts but still interesting. http://www.witnesstowar.org/

This is a military date I commemorate annually.............. 71 years ago today on this date (18 April 1942) 16 B-25's took off from the deck of the USS Hornet led by Lt. Col Jimmy Doolittle to bomb targets in Japan. The raid shook the confidence of the Japanese leaders and lifted up the spirits of the American people at a time when things looked bleak. The subsequent victory at the Battle of Midway was in part due to the effects of the Doolittle Raid. There are only 3 surviving aircrew members of the raid and they will be meeting today in Florida for their final reunion. Let us never forget the bravery of the airmen who volunteered for the raid and the…

Just what the fuck is this? An award that's higher than the Bronze Star for people that never leave the warmth, comfort, and coffee of their office. Nothing like slapping the face of the vets who actually did something in actual combat to get the award, other than sitting there playing Microsoft simulator. Whats next, those that play COD, etc? This really pisses me off. The only way for some lame officers to get some medals? http://news.yahoo.com/pentagon-creat...-politics.html

This has absolutely nothing to do with the C-130 or even aviation in any way, but it should bring a smile to your face. Don R. Click here: The Girls On Fox News Song - YouTube

Okay, guys, i figure if I can get good info on something, I can get it here. after years and I do mean years, I have found most of my old slides and picture and negatives from my years as a TAC trained killer. and, no Chris, they are NOT deguerreatypes. I want to digitalize them, and want some ideas on a converter. I read the reviews on many of them and still can't tell which is worth getting. I figure some of you, at least, have done this with your stuff, so any advice would be greatly appreciated... thanks Giz

Hi guy's and gals I read an article in this mornings Wisconsin State Journal that I highly reccomend to each one of us. Written by Paul Greenberg titled "The turret gunner was a woman". Please google either the "Wisconsin State Journal" or "Paul Greenberg" and read this piece. If you go to the newspaper site it will be under the "Opinion" section, if you google Greenberg you will find it by scrolling down a bit. It's worth a couple minutes of searching!!!!! tinwhistle (Chris)

You get what you vote for!!! The military's managed-care option -- TRICARE Prime -- will be ended Oct. 1 for retirees, their family members and for military survivors who reside more than 40 miles from a military treatment facility or from a base closure site, TRICARE Management Activity announced Wednesday. Most of these 171,400 beneficiaries will need to shift health coverage from Prime to TRICARE Standard, the military's fee-for-service health insurance option. For beneficiaries who use more than preventive health care during the year, the shift will mean higher out-of-pocket costs. I think I've got that right!!! When I volunteered as a load master/flare kicker for Blind Bat in 1968, I was sent to Kadena for a week or so to attend classes to become a qualified flight crew member. The classes that I had to go through was the altitude chamber, spatial disorientation, the g-force ejection seat, and parachute training (the tower and getting out of the harness etc.) I also had to undergo a flight physical and qualify at the shooting range with the 38 Spec. revolver and the M-16 with full auto (3 shot bursts)!! All of that stuff was pretty exciting for a 2-stripe maint puke, but when I look through my records that I have there is no mention of any of this…

Interesting article. I've got an answer for them. They're no longer "pilots" and play Microsoft Flight Simulator for their job. http://defensetech.org/2013/01/02/19091/

This has been a wonderful year for me, starting out meeting and spending a few days with my (now) good friend, and mountain guide, MTcrewchief, also meeting and visiting with Giz and his wife over dinner. What a super guy! Both of my new friends are terrific people, and I look forward to spending more time with them in 2013!!!!!!!! As if making new friends wasn't enough, I met up with a very old and dear friend. She is old, fat, ugly, and on "crutches" now, but what a reunion with old #877!!!!!!! I have been truly blessed this year and I want to send a very Blessed Christmas greeting to all of you out there. This community of C-130 folks means a great deal to me!!!…

Went to the range the other day and shooting my carry gun and had a squib load (primer only, no gunpowder) and now I have a bullet lodged HARD into the barrel, now to find a way to get it out without damaging the barrel. Scary part is this is my carry gun, what would have happened if I had to use it and this happened - seriously screwed is what I would have been. This was with MagTech ammo, anybody else have trouble with their ammo?

Well this has been a pretty crappy summer for me, I had to get back surgery for a disk bulge on July 19th, then on 31 Aug they had to go back in again because bone slivers left behind from the first surgery had torn a 3 inch hole in the spinal dura (the membrane covering the spinal cord and brain), that left a huge drain of CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) so they had to go back in to stitch the dura back up. I cant even begin to describe the level of migraines I have had to deal with since the tear started, problem is now 5 days after the surgery I am still having the migraines and the wound is draining like a beast still, afraid they missed another tear back there. I dont…

Just had a few thoughts I thought I would share with you and nothing big just thinking of the past. I suppose all you vets that came back from Vietam , where probably just like me. After I come back to the states I really never thought about Vietnam. For the rest of my career the subject just didn't seem to come up. After retiring from my civilian job with a lot of time on my hands I found the Herky Bird site and Vietnam came back to my memory like it was yesterday. There is no way we can thank Sam and Casey for all the work they have put in keeping this site going we all ouw lot to them. Like a lot of flight engineers we have a maintenance background …

Hi everyone, If you go to my personal gallery you will find the latest pictures I've posted of my old aircraft tail #877. She and I were recently reunited after a seperation of almost 50 years! The new pictures starting with #065 through 068 are pics given to me by the Base commander (Colonel "Robbie" Robertson) of the 182nd Airlift Wing, Peoria A.N.G., and are pictures of the aircraft when she was still on active duty. The rest were taken the day I visited and are labeled. I hope you enjoy them!!! tinwhistle (Chris)

Memory is a fragile thing (at my age!), and I can't remember who you are!!! Please email me at [email protected] and if that one doesn't work use [email protected]. Thanks.....Chris
