The Post-Warthog Plan —Brian Everstine The Air Force is adjusting its original plan for replacing Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve A-10s after several failed attempts to divest the fleet. A new Force Structure Action plan based on the Fiscal 2017 budget request details what Guard and Reserve units will fly once they lose their A-10s. USAF now plans to begin replacing the venerable Warthogs on a "squadron-by-squadron" basis in Fiscal 2018. The final aircraft is slated to retire in 2022 after the F-35 comes on line. For example, in 2018, the Reserve A-10 unit at Whiteman AFB, Mo., and the Guard unit at Fort Wayne ANGS, Ind., will both transfer to F-16s. In…

I have come across this kit that I can't find any information on. When I research the military part numbers it shows as being for use on some of the C130 variants. This is basically just a cable and pulley kit but there are some things that raise my curiosity factor. It is in a very nicely made box, It has steel cable with hooks, It has three heavy duty roller brackets that appear to be used to pass the cable around corners. But the two cable blocks appear to be very light duty. The hooks are lightweight and the pulleys appear to be made of a phenolic material so not much load capacity there. I asked at the local foresty service flight office and they thought it was used …

I was thinking it would be nice to see if after all of these years there are still some guys out there that are still looking for some word about their old friends. Especially in the late 60's to the early 70's. You know, the guys from Naha, CCK. Ubon, Tachikawa, Clark, Max Tan etc. All were Viet Nam Veterans probably! Maybe we could post a pic or two ---if we still remember how!!! I will try 1st: I know all of these people Ken ,

I just discovered this site and was wondering if there are any of "the guys" around that were stationed at CCK. I was a Loadmaster on the C-130E and was stationed at CCK between Feb 1967 and Jun 1968.

I was looking through some pictures I took in Vietnam 69-70 and I came across some pictures of an A Model that I think was parked in a revetment at TSN. This was in Nov or Dec of 69. I did not get the tail number. The left side of the aft fuselage, left gear area and left wing/flap looked like swiss cheeze from a rocket or mortar that had exploded near the left paratroop door. Anybody have any info on what plane this was and the story behind it?

http://www.167aw.ang.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123162744 West Virginia Airmen Use C-130 As Trainer By Staff Sgt. Sherree Grebenstein West Virginia National Guard MARTINSBURG, W.V., (8/17/09) - The 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard is now officially home to the C-5 Galaxy, but another aircraft can be found parked on the flight line. And while the aircraft will never fly on another mission, it may just save lives. A C-130E Hercules destined for retirement to what is also known as the "bone yard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Ariz., was diverted from Ramstein Air Base in Germany last month for use by Airmen based her…

A fairly new member to this site from Sarasota, FL sent me these photos. His name is Frank Kagele. It's quite a project and will hopefully fly this sometime in the next few months. It's built in 1/12th scale and has a 134" wingspan. It has functional fowler flaps, ramp, air deflector doors and an engine sync system. It's powered by 4 English 4-stroke .91 ci engines and weighs about 50 pounds. He's also fitting it to do a LAPES! Frank, if you have anything to add, please join in. Don R.

I've seen it laying in the apron for lots of time. The story i know is that it belongs to a private owner and used to belong to the USAF. Its suposed to inform the USAF everytime that it changed owner (in order to prevent shady ops i assume) and they did not. It came to OGMA for a major overhaul and a FAA inspector saw it there at the time. He contacted the proper authorities just for the curiosity and since then it was forbidden to fly (how?) and the owner just didn't pay for the services. Its been sitting there since... I don't know the serial but i can find out... http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.893292,-9.025344&spn=0.002426,0.006523&t=h&z=18

I was asked this question by a friend of mine & I didn\'t have an answer (nothing unusual there!). Did the C-130E have any kind of 60HZ electrical outlet in the cockpit for a shaver or CD player? I remember a couple of 28 volt outlets for the Aldis lamps on the side panels. I also think there was a 60HZ outlet back by the iron lung area. Thanks, Don R.

Air Force officials announced the award of two contracts to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company-Marietta, Ga., June 13 for the procurement of six modified KC-130J aircraft, and non-recurring costs associated with modifying the KC-130J. The modified KC-130Js meet the unique mission requirements of the Air Combat Command\'s search and rescue and Air Force Special Operations Command\'s special operations forces mission areas. These awards begin the recapitalization of the Air Force\'s aging fleet of CSAR and SOF HC/MC-130 aircraft, which have long been in a state of low supply and high demand and are facing mounting sustainment challenges.

Let\'s see a C117 do this....Got this off the AFA magazine site. Muff Just Another Day: The crew of a C-130 transport from Pope AFB, N.C., overcame the failure of two of the aircraft\'s four engines during a flight March 19 in Southwest Asia to safely deliver five wounded personnel to their destination. While in flight, the No. 2 engine began leaking oil and had to be shut down. About an hour later, the No. 3 engine began malfunctioning and eventually had to be turned off as well. As if that wasn\'t enough, the aircraft\'s autopilot, radar, and No. 1 compass system also went dead. But through it all the crew persevered and reached the destination, landing the C-130 w…

Hi I got an e mail today that said \"I think 62-1793, 63-7764 and 63-7829 are Ground trainers at Little Rock\". I showed 62-1793 flying with the 61AS and 63-7829 flying with the 53 AS going to 62 AS? I know 63-7764 was dropped from the inventory years ago but I did not know it was a ground trainer? Can anyone verify that these three are now ground trainers? Any idea why 62-1816 and 72-1296 which are permanently grounded did not go to AMARC? Politicians? Thanks Bob

Aeronautical Systems Center is in the market for 115 medium-size transport aircraft to replace USAF’s current fleet of HC-130 and MC-130 combat rescue and special operations tankers. A “sources sought†notice says the Air Force expects to take delivery of the first six aircraft by the end of 2011, followed by eight per year thereafter. ASC plans to hold an industry day on Feb. 5 to discuss the program with potential contractors—large or small or teams.

11/14/2007 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- A 44-year-old C-130 with a Purple Heart and more than 29,500 flying hours flew its final combat mission Nov. 13 here. Aircraft 63-7865, belonging to Ramstein Air Base, Germany\'s 86th Airlift Wing and currently assigned to the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing here, transported servicemembers and cargo between bases in the region before landing after its final combat sortie. \"It was an honor for me to fly this last combat sortie for 63-7865. It is amazing and humbling to know that this aircraft had an illustrious history and combat record dating back over a quarter century even before I flew it for the first time more than 17 years …

After weeks of viewing, I have worked out what is the problem of the actual site. I live in a trailer, and use a lap top to access. Particularly in the forum area, all the colours and the print size, make reading much harder for us oldies. Casey can you establish if this can be upgraded. Thanks Col Tigwell

The Road to the New Rescue Tanker: Air Force officials took delivery of the service's first new-build HC-130J rescue tanker from Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Ga., early last month, but this platform will not enter operational service for another two years. The aircraft will remain in Marietta undergoing developmental test until October 2011, SSgt Robin Stanchak, spokeswoman for the 23rd Wing at Moody AFB, Ga., told the Daily Report. After that, it will transfer to Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., for use in operational testing and in training crew members from the base's 79th Rescue Squadron as the unit prepares for the transition from the HC-130 to the HC-130J, she said.
