Colonel George "Bud" Day passed away at his home in Shalimar Florida today. He was 88. Born in 1925, Bud served in the Air Force with distinction. After having been shot down over North Viet Nam, he survived 5 1/2 years as a POW. He attempted at least one escape from confinement. During captivity, Col. Day spent a short time sharing a cell with John McCain. Today Senator McCain said "Bud was one of the most courageous men I have ever known". McCain, went on to extend praise for Col Day's encouragement and support to those POW's he was imprisoned with. Among his many accolades, he is also the recipient of the Medal of Honor. A service will be held on Thursday Aug…

Thanks Sam as didn\'t see this posted figured you hadn\'t gotten to it yet. They started a site, www.LetsSayThanks.com where you can pick out a Thank You card and Xerox will print it and sent to a soldier who is currently serving overseas, absolutely FREE. You can\'t pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the Armed Services. Please send cards to our troops serving to keep us free. No restriction on how often you do this. Pass it along to your friends. Take care.

Greetings, this is more for the folks living in the Andrews area. Their annual open house is this weekend, Friday is more of a DOD family day and Sat-Sun for the general public. We are bringing a J from LR and I believe an AC-130H will be there as well along with numerous other static displays and the Thunderbirds. If you make it over there stop by the J and say hello. http://www.jsoh.org/

Sad news from the HB inbox via Maurice Alford. Our daughter Laura called him and talked to him a bit Saturday night...he was sitting up in bed...probably about 8 PM. One of the Brainerd cousins (Mike, Pat's nephew) was with him until 9 PM. Somewhere in this time period, he called son Andy and left him a message, "Hey, Meathead! I love you." He told his lady friend Kay to go on home and take care of Curly (his dog). Then sometime about 9:30 he had a relaspe/sinking spell. Things just stopped....they gave him 2 shocks and tried CPR, but he never came back. Laura and her brother Andy are just heartbroken because it was rather unexpected since he seemed to ha…

He was surrounded by his two sons, loving wife of 49 years and other family. Chief Master Sgt. Messer retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1984 after proudly serving for 30 years. His last assignment was at Hurlburt Field with the 8th Special Operations Squadron as Chief Loadmaster and Superintendent of Operations. As some of you know already, I am attempting to compile a data base of former 8th SOS (Combat Talon I) members and also passing on information on the upcoming reunion. Please forward to me any mailing address, phone#s, e-mail addresses and/or any other info that I might not have on record. Also, please send this to anyone you think is not on my list and should be. I am attaching the Agenda, Registration Form and Trifold. The earlier you register for the reunion, the easier it is for the organizers to make all the arrangements. Also, if you are interested in playing golf, we are limited to 8 foursomes, so sign up soon to avoid the rush. Golf has been moved from Gator…

Tradtions Military Video has been around for awhile at www.militaryvideo.com. I just took a look at their site and see that they have added quite a few new films, all of which were shot by military photographers from World War II and on (possibly some from the 1930s.) There are a number that are C-130 related, including footage in Vietnam. One DVD is devoted to films of the Fulton Recovery System. I've bought a few from them over the years. They've very interesting and some bring back a lot of memories.

Col. Russell Crane, who commanded the 374th TCW/TAW at Naha, passed away earlier this week in Williamsburg, Virginia. When I get a copy of his obit, I'll post it. Col. Crane came to Naha from McChord and was initially assigned as vice-wing commander. He took over the wing when Col. John R. Neal left in the summer of 1967 and was in command at the height of the Vietnam War (that, for those who don't know, was 1968-69.)

Anyone here know Darrell? This coming Friday at the Ohio Statehouse Darrell will be inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. Only 17 troops are being so honored. In May 1968 Darrell was a crewmember on a herc. that flew into Kham Duc, RVN under fire and evacuated more than 120 Vietnamese civilians and allied forces before the city was overrun by the VC. For this heroic act he was awarded the DFC. Darrell lives in Lebanon, OH. The Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor came into being in 2000 and has annually inducted new members since that time. It has a website at www.ohioheroes.org and a public display in Mottts Military Museum in Groveport,…

He lost his battle with cancer on January 14 2013 and went to fly that bird in the sky. He served his country with honor and devotion for 26 years in the United States Air Force,a person that everyone respected and depended upon, with a sense of humor and a warm smile that was with him at the end. He was the father to six children and 18 grandchildren. He was a great friend and coworker to many. He will be greatly missed by all.

USAF Colonel, (Ret) Jerry Figgins passed away of cancer they found back in June. Colonel Figgins was the 61st TAS Commander, 1979-1980 and a Lockheed Martin Instructor for many years after his Air Force retirement. The viewing/visitation is Saturday 1000-1100 at Powell Funeral Home, West Beebe Capps Blvd., Searcy, Arkansas. Funeral services at 1100 at the Funeral Home. His request was that instead of flowers, that we consider the less fortunate children that Jerry always tried to help. The Searcy Children's home was his favorite charity and so he wanted us to care by donating to this children's home.
