Hello, i just signed up so I could make this post, I've been on a long hunt for something that eludes me still and I hope you all don't mind me using your forum to seek assistance. My father was stationed in Okinawa, 35th from around 65-68-ish. I don't know a lot about his service, he isn't real talkative about himself, never has been. But what I HAVE heard is him complain for 40 years about his damn hat that he lost. I've been on a mission for the last year to try and have one made for him, but the details are sketchy and I don't want to ask him because I want it to be a surprise. Here is what I know: He was part of the 35th TAS, a mechanic of unknown level. I know he…

Thousands of miles from the unrest in Libya, there is some of that country's property sitting right here in Cobb County - namely, eight Lockheed Martin C-130 airplanes Read more: The Marietta Daily Journal - Libyan planes sitting in Cobb

Ken, Here's one for you. Spent two days on a Swift Boat out of CRB with a friend from the 35th (his cousin was on the Swift Boat). Was only supposed to be gone for a couple of hours. My plane (56-0489) rotated back to the rock without me. AP's took me into custody and made sure I was on the next flight to Naha. Had some 'splaining to do to the line chief (MSgt. Tanner) and the squadron commander. Sgt. Tanner saved my ass. Sonny

I noticed there was some stuff missing or in the wrong place on the Herkepedia. I mentioned it to Joey on the Facebook C-130 Group but at the time didn't remember what I had noticed. Here is a rundown of the original C-130 units: 463rd Troop Carrier Wing - 772nd, 773rd, 774th (joined by 29th TCS at Clark) Was originally at Ardmore, OK, then moved to Sewart around 1958. Transferred to Langley in 1963. Went to the Philippines in December 1965 - Wing Hq and 772nd and 774th at Mactan, 773rd and 29th at Clark. 314th TCW - 50th, 61st and 62nd. Based at Sewart AFB, TN. Second to get C-130s. Wing and 50th transferred to PACAF in December 1965. 317th TCW - 39th, 40th and…

We are looking at painting one of our C-130s (4529) with a \"Vintage\" paint job and I was looking at the \"old\" B model pictures and noticed that several were missing. Is that the result of the \"copyright\" issue a while back? I am specifically looking for a picture of a B model in the LAC 3533 to LAC 3650 range with the Coast Guard orange nose but with an all white tail(?). We want to try and recreate the old-style CG shield shown on that one. I\'d also like the story behind the all-white tail! Oh, and where are those pictures taken? The background is the same for several of the birds but a lot of us that been around can\'t place it... Thanks for your help! …

Hello, Am new here so apologize up front if this has been discussed previously. There is currently a photo on ebay which ostensibly depicts the subject a/c with what appears to be 2 engines. I have tried to find some explanation for this configuration but have found nothing. I am a veteran with fond memories of the C-130, but I am far from a technical expert. I just found this particular photo fascinating since I had never seen a twin-engine C-130 previously. Can anyone offer any insight on what this photo represents or am I just imagining something ? Thanks, Bob Rinder http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290968097380&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:316…

I just thought I'd ask these questions to see what kind of trips you all had in the past. My best was from Pope in '93 on a St.Croix channel. The whole crew was extremely cool, got to spend a night in Jamaica, and even got to fly the acft (on autopilot of course) for about 5 minutes on the way back to Pope, and the worst was; on an out an' back mission in Desert Storm when a tac gen went out in Oman. The omanis wouldnt let us borrow a maint stand,so me an the other CC,Steve Moles, had to use the ladder fully extended, leaned up on the prop cowling trying to change that damn thing! We used all of the gen pads & ran the eng each time to no avail, and had to spend the night t…

I could have sworn this was posted here. ?? http://www.defendamerica.mil/articles/sep2005/a092705wm3.html While I know there have been all female crews for other aircraft, I believe what was special was that this was for an H.

Does anyone have any close ups of the two rails attached to the bottom of the upper rear cargo door of Rescue HC-130Hs/Ns/Ps? I believe that when the door was raised in-flight, the rails were connected to overhead rails in the cargo bay and were used to lift and drop the air rescue package. Does anyone have more detailed information on its use? This is for a modeler who is building an HC-130P. Also, the 33rd ARRS had the MAC badge and Rescue tail band on a SEA camo bird in the mid 70s. Does anyone know the tail number so I can look it up in your photo library? Also, does anyone know of the tail number of the HC-130Ps that supported HH-53s on the Son Tay Raid? Any help …

What ever became of the old AWADS(?) system that we had back in the first part of the 70's. I'm talkin' about the system that had the buttons on a panel on the glare shield, with, I think, up down, right left and perhaps plus and minus. there was a big black dome on top of the fuselage. I seem to remember either the nav or the copilot had to do something with it, enter a code or somethin'. Best I can recall, it was not all that reliable sometimes. Surely I didn't imagine it , did I??? Giz

On a humorous note, I would like to hear about some of the in-flight antic's that we have all pulled form time to time in our illustrious career's. To start the thread, I'll give you all a good one. 1979 w/ the 17TAS, we had a Instr. Nav that loved his cigar's, and with sure fired cockiness he smoked those things in flight. A real pr--k in every sense. Well, the AC got one of his Dutch Master's from his satchel, and creatively unpacked tobacco, inserted a firecracker, and then repacked the stogie. He placed it back in the pack so it was readily available inserted slightly out of the pack. As you all can well imagine, he was puffing away a few hours later and BANG! …

Another thread here prompted a memory. When I was at Pope I remember a picture (think it was at 3rd Aerial Port) of a big ball of metal that used to be a tank. The story was that it happened during a LAPES on Bragg someplace, no chutes or a "bad bounce" or something similar. Anyone have any memory of this? It was around the 73-75 time frame.

Today my wife and I were clearin' some stuff out of our attic, yeah really, and came across a bunch of stuff from my AF days..... a couple of travel orders, a passenger manifest between Ban Me Thouh and Saigon, with four Vietnamese troops on it ( I guess they were on our side), set of the texts from loady school in 70, a complete set of airdrop checklists, in the blue plastic spiral book, a copy of the order that had us stop using parachutes on airdrops and usin' the harnesses instead, that was 1973......My God, I can't believe I used to know all that stuff....................What a trip back in time an old cardboard box provided load clear giz

I was at Naha June 69-Jun 71. Was asst. crew chief on 55-023, and crew chief on 56-469. Pulled TDYs to Ubon religiously starting in Oct. 69 until the Wing deactivated. Along with Charlie Agar, Jay Green, Terry Shockler, John Roy, and others. I returned to Ubon with the Spectre gunships and crewed 54-1623 and 56-469 (again). Agar and Green followed me back there shortly after I arrived. Got to fly the "flagpole" a couple of times and played I.O. once. Had to go to Cam Rahn and TanSon Nhut when planes broke there couple of times. Sorry but I don't remember any of the flight crew names, although there was this one engineer who was rather short I got along famously wit…

As I recall, during the Falklands war, the Argentinians briefly used a C-130 as a bomber. Does anyone know how they did it? (slung on the pylons, extracted out the back, gravity dropped?)
