I had this emailed to me today thought I would share. This apparently took place in Texas somewhere. Reminds me of my days at Dyess back in the late 70\'s early 80\'s. [img size=499]http://herkybirds.com/images/fbfiles/images/snake2.jpg

This may have been THE most popular song during the Vietnam War. There are a number of C-130s shown in the video. Somma y\'all may recognize some of the tail numbers and locations. I know it wasn\'t filmed at Katum (aka: ka-BOOM!!!) \'cause we din\'t have mountains around us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWZ-JBbQJIc&feature=related

It is not a Herk but us retirees have to make due with what we can: Just a heads up, I volunteer with the Collings folks out here in Houston, and we are just an engine run away from having our F-4D Phlying again. The bird has been down since 06 when she FOD\'d the #2 engine. The new J79 is in and it looks like we found the last leak (knock on wood) and should be able to get her run up,then up for a FCF. We have her repainted. She is no longer is the paint of Steve Ritchies 463. She now will fly as Robin Old\'s \"Operation Bolo\" aircraft 63-7680. The aircraft will be a tribute to the 8th FW and Robin Olds and also Major Martin who died in 680 when it crashed off th…

I watched a program last night where there were rocket engines built onto a C-130. It was built to stop in 1400\' and take off in 1800\'. When it would touch down 2 rocket engines on each side of the fusilage would act as reverse, and on take off there was a bounch of them helping it take off faster. It was to be used to rescue the hostages that were taken while carter(I think) was President. There was a video of the plane comeing in for a landing while in the testing phase. The rockets were ignited before the plane touched down and crashed. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Borrowed from the 7SOS web site A Few Good Navs! (Think Jack Nicholson in \"A Few Good Men.\" You want the truth, pilot? You can\'t handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has mountains, and those mountains have to be found by Navs with APN-59s. Who\'s gonna do it? You? You, Major Stick Monkey? We have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for a color copied chart and a decent box lunch, and you curse the Navs. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what we know—that a modified contour, while tragic, probably suppresses detection; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, domina…

I\'m just throwing this out to see what happens. I\'ve noticed since I started looking into some of these on- line groups that a lot, if not all, units had identifying patches and unit slogans and so forth. I was assigned to Pope in Jan. of 1964, crossed from B-47 to C-130 and in a matter of weeks started TDY. My B-4 bag was my bestest friend! I was hardly ever in N.C. Was eventually assigned permanently to CCK in 1966,if you\'re old enough, you know the rest of the story. We never had any unit patches, slogans, or stuff. Am I missing something or did the A.F. finally get around to realizing that we were there? Any thoughts?...Chris

I watched it on the National Geographics channel last night. I was hopeing they would show more of the planes, specially the C-130,s. They did for an instant flash a couple that had burned out. I left there in Nov. of 66 after a 17 month tour at Naha and where ever else they sent me. I went to Ubon for supposidely 60 days and had to sign a waver that I wouldn\'t take the 30 days off of my tour. When I got there they put me on swing shift tracking down specialest when the planes were about to abort the evening missions. I think I actually stayed there about 7 days and went back to Naha. And yes they did give me that 30 days on my early out, and I didn\'t complain o…

On the wall inside C-branch in the 80\'s we had a beautiful, wall-sized front view mock-up of a gear down 130. If I recall (as, of course I have absolutely NO knowledge to neither confirm nor deny this) the story goes that it was \"borrowed\" from a building at a certain East Coast US 130 base at the end of an ORI or ORE. Anybody know what ever became of it when the Hercs left McChord?

I just got back from AATTC where there was a Belgian 130 and a German C-160. The Germans seemed to know what they were doing, but since it wasn\'t a herk I\'m not familiar with the airframe. With the Belgians I could tell what they were doing. They run things more like our Navy, where they have airframe, powerplant, and avionics people. They don\'t have a zillion backshop specialists like the Air Force does. I watched two of their people change a pair of nose tires faster than I could even get the required TO\'s together. While the herks were out flying we talked about the planes and they seem to really know their stuff. They said there are now only 10 herks in the…
