After all these years, the subject of prop servicing is still discussed. I have experimented the last couple days with propeller oil levels, both static over-night cold level checks and cycled prop pressure sump and atmospheric dipstick checks. One aircraft leaned when I checked it and then I checked it again after I leveled it. What I found out was that the pump housing all act differently when the feather pump motor shuts off. Some drain back immediately and others don\'t drain back at all. A leaning aircraft throws the measurements off. I also found that if left for an additional 24 hours, the levels in both sumps increase. The amount draining back into the …

Manually draining refuel manifold 1 2
by Guest- 31 replies

I have heard many reasons why the manual says to drain the SPR manifold manually. I just wanted to throw this out there and find out why after you have already accomplished draining the roughly 200lbs of fuel with the drain pump the manual says to drain the residual into a container. It seems to me that the mere half gallon of fuel left in the manifold would be far fetch to call it a weight and balance issue. And the old a rock might burst the manifold open on t/o or landing is not actually going to get that small amount to spill anywhere. In reality the JP-8 we use would be much more volatile in a vapor form in that manifold to cause an explosion or fire of the sort…

Ok so flew FCF shut #3 down go to restart it the blades begin to come out of fleather just a tiny bit then go back to feather no propeller rotation. Land adjust NTS bracket go back up same thing ,go to Airstart prop begins to come out of feather a tiny bit then goes back to feather. this time change Valve housing perform run all checks good! back to FCF shut #3 down feathers fine go to restart, same thing comes out of feather just a bit then back to feather still no rotation of propeller need help with this one I have a few theories one could be bad quad seals, not letting enough pressure to unfeather the prop with the extra force of 150 knots of wind another could be…

Looking for an answer to a question I have had for many years--since 1970!!! I was at Naha for a Wing-Tip Light TCTO on 62-1804 from CCK. While I was there waiting for a crew to fly it back to CCK, there was a C-130 parked in the transit area where I was parked, and it had two sets of prop blades on each engine! One set in front of another. I don't remember if they were three bladed or four. The plane was painted a bright brown camo. pattern and I think it was from Australia or somewhere like that! Maybe New Zealand. There was some insignia on it but I can't remember what it was. If I remember right it was a bird or some kind of animal! I think I had sobered up from a…

OK here is one for you... Statement during FCF... (Nose Landing Gear must take at least 3 seconds to retract.) I remember something about the down switches not being the actual "position" of the strut but the position of the actuator... Any ideas on this? The flow regulator controls speed in both directions but the note only mentions retract. My recollection (clouded as it may be) is the LG handle will route power to the up switch and show up instantaneously.

Hello all, I am a new member and need some help getting information regarding the fuel system on C-130A models. I am a fuel cell mechanic and have worked C-130's for 13 years but the earliest models I have worked are B models. I would like to get an idea of the major changes done from A models as well as specifics of the original system. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

I was a non-crew ground-pounder who only flew on C-130s a few times, but I always enjoyed listening to the engine start-up check list, and it was great fun standing at the paratroop doors and watching the "whoomph" from the tailpipe as the engine started. I've forgotten the order of the checklist. I remember "enrichment" and "ignition" and "generator on", but I've forgotten the exact sequence after the pilot (or engineer, or who?) says "Turning four". Can someone recite the engine start-up checklist once again, please? Thanks.

Emergency Hatches 1 2

Can anyone explain to me the logic behind the numbering of the overhead emergency hatches? Correct me if I am wrong, but why is #1 in the rear, #3 in the middle, and #4 above the flight-crew bunk? Why no #2?

OK, we have an aircraft with a recurring anti-skid issue. If the aircaft is taxiing, going pretty slow, when they step on the brakes, they can feel the brakes pulsating. All the tranducer wiring checks out. The control box gets swapped out, and it works for a few flights, maybe... This last time it was written up by the same crew that had written it up two flights previous. But forget about that, we are assuming it is a real problem. Anybody seen this before?

Hey all! I am looking for some information on a couple of subjects and thought that someone might know what I\'m talking about. First subject: Do any of you remember back a few years ago when we were having to move the pilots and copilots O2 walkaround bottles to the galley wall when installing flight deck armor? I am looking for the TCTO or OTI that bascially stopped us from doing this anymore. I noticed in the 00GE-00-1 under armor installation that the slick as removed this task, however, the T1, T2, and MC-P still have this listed as a task. I am trying to do a Form 22 to have this removed from the armor installation for these aircraft. Second subject: How about…

We have had an issue with the air crew writing up cargo comp A/C pack distributing weak air flow on a 89 model (c-130h). We have already changed a bad low temp control valve, flow control shutoff valve. Also we checked for the water separator/sock for and icing or contamination. Did not find any leaks with the heat exchanger and the turbine is running like a champ. We suspect the crew is writing it up because it’s been really hot lately and until they get the engines going they will have less air with the APU. Some people want to throw a turbine at the aircraft but its working fine with great suction and the air is cooling. I was hoping to find someone with …

bulk head??? 1 2

Does anyone out there know the name of or the number of the foreward bulk head on the C-130E? If memory serves me correctly, it's the bulk head that houses all the electrical panels. I suppose you could call it the "front wall" of the cargo compartment. For some reason this is bothering me!!!!....Chris

Dry bay question 1 2
by Guest- 27 replies

So I have seen a butterfly type valve on the number one and four dry bays that is located on the aft wing beam. It is right next to where the refuel de fuel manifold exits the dry bay. Does anyone know it's purpose? I fly the KC130T however it is not rigged for IFR ie no pods mounted it does have the plumbing. I have been told it has something to do with IFR but I cannot find it in my pubs. Any help is appreciated. *edit I have found it in the IPB it calls it a flapper valve.

Hi everyone, I've been trying to figure out why the elevator boost system is reversed, compared to the aileron/rudder assemblies. I've heard theories, and have looked into the NATOPS, and the lockheed manuals, sorry airforce I dont know your books too well, but I'm looking for a pub or something official saying why. I have heard that the elevator boost assembly was simply designed to be installed upside down, which I guess makes sense. But I have also heard that it was put in that way to prevent confusion since if you're inspecting it, you'd have to face aft and therefore get the filters (for example) confused. I find this hard to believe, but any help would be greatly a…

Hello, I was a crew dog on a C-130 for 15 years...anyways, we're having a debate at work about the cargo door (I'm a C-17 crew dog now). Some of the fella's i work with think the C-130 cargo door is only locked in the closed position with pressurization. I worked on 130s that had a snubber infront of the actuator so i'm not sure if it's the same on all 130's or just the ones with the snubber, but I remember having to replace the spring on the cargo door lock latch mechanism on the side of the cargo door, that can only be unlocked by either A. operating door normally with hydraulics. or B. manually opening the cargo door...or C. if you climb up and pull up on the cables …

Cargo door 1 2

Given the fact that there may be aircraft out there where the door will free fall and lock, is there anything in writing that requires it to do so? We can find nothing in any book that requires it to do so. All checks we perform and any mention of it in the -1 requires the switch to be set to the down position, which will lock this particular door.

We have a interphone problem that's been kicking our ass trying to track down so I figured I'd post here and see if anyone has any ideas we haven't tried. The Issue... We have a C-130 H2, Tail 87-9281 with a loud buzzing tone that is heard only in the Pilots, Copilots and Flight Intstructors stations. All other stations sound clear. The tone is heard regardless of which radios/nav systems are selected on the control box and volume panels. The tone in the bad stations goes away only when you press that call button, and only on the station which the call button is pressed. Troubleshooting... We have already pulled and swapped all the boxes and comm cords, doe…

Does anyone know the history of the electric valve housings program? We are currently de-modding a bird back to traditional valve housings, and I am interested in the operational history of this program. I understand that there are about 5 birds with this system. I ran this one when it got here, and it ran great. 100% across the board, rock solid. I understand that parts support, troubleshooting/training were factors leading the EPCS\'s demise. The removed components are being \'green tagged\', but I have heard that they are bound for DRMO. Hard to believe...these babies can\'t be cheap.

I have an Flight Engineer's seat, probably from an E model, that I want to eventually put in a corner of my den. It looks in good shape, but I'm looking for information on it to fix it up. Can anyone give a paint spec, the seat belt & shoulder harness model/type, and any information such as NSN or model of the tracks that it rode on? Thanks.

Ok, I have a question regarding the emergency FLAP brake valve. After takeoff the flaps stopped retracting at 40%. C/B checked good so I went to the emergency flap brake valve. (Don’t worry I didn’t reset it). The valve reset lever was full forward (to the right when looking at it) and had no “free playâ€. I took this to mean it was engaged, however, after shutdown MX ran the flaps through and the valve was in the same position…flaps working fine. (FYI, water in the switches was not a factor) My question is… What does the emergency brake valve look/feel like when it is engaged? Thanks for the help!

I have been reading the posts about which planes had the digital gauges etc. I didn't know the flight decks could look any different than this! (see below) !!! If any of you have pics of the new modernized flight decks, post some pics if you have them please! Thanks, Ken
