Goodbye, Old Friend: Members of the 79th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., executed the unit's final mission in the HC-130P personnel recovery airplane. The squadron is transitioning to the new, more capable HC-130J model and expects to commence operations with it in October, according to a base release. The final HC-130P sortie came on Sept. 12 as a crew took the aircraft out for roughly seven hours, states the release. Upon landing, squadron colleagues and family members greeted the crew on the flightline to mark the occasion. Lt. Col. Christopher McCarthy, a 563rd Rescue Group instructor pilot, who was the aircraft commander on the sortie, said he thinks the…

Hello all I am trying to ascertain the current sub-type of Bu.164993. As far as I'm aware, this was built as a standard C-130T, however, some suggest this was modified as KC-130T (circa 2005). Can anyone confirm please? Kind regards and many thanks in advance, Chris

Back in 69', someone made a song called the "Black Berets" that was sung to the Ballad of the Green Berets music. If anyone has a copy of that, I'd really like to hear from you. Thanks, Sarg

While rummaging around for somethin' else, I came across this picture, from June 1970, of my loadie class, at Sheppard. Does anyone recognize any of these guys, or know where they are now? Front row: Georgeson (ID, Hearne (TXs), Merrow (CA), Brummett (TN), Yeakley (AK), Hamblin (KY) Second row: TSGT Mike Hollman, instructor (was in 316th around 72), Correa(CA), Gannon(TX), Parish(WV, now D), Stoddard(VT, went to Pease Rescue), Banks(GA) Vaughn (IN) Classick(CA), Rudek(CA) I hope I can attach the picture. Sure would like to know where these guys ended up. It seemed to me that we were quite a bunch and got along well. But 41 years AGO????? Gi…

I was just going through some old records I have stored. I was in the 41st TAS at Naha. Tech Sargent Robert Lawson was my NCOIC. I was the assistant crew chief on 55-025. The crew chief was Ronald Johnson. It is a shame the memory isn't better. Maybe too many brews! Hahaha! Of course this was 40 years plus ago.......

I am amazed at how much you guys can come up with in regards to C-130 missions! Is there a way to find out specific dates of missions in Viet Nam? For example, on Jan. 1st. 1968, I was flying on my acft. 56-475, and we were shot up at Katum! I was flying as assistant crew-chief, just for the hell of it--for excitement!!! We usually didn\'t go in-country from Cam Rahn Bay with our acft. Any way, we made it out after plugging bullet holes in the wings(with fuel running down our armpits) etc. and after transferring fuel with the GTC blowing in the spilled fuel! I am curious if that mission was ever recorded and if so, could the paper-work be recovered. I am pretty sure t…

Every once in awhile there is discussion of the weight that a Herk can haul and it seems to me that we're talking somewhere in the range of 40,000 to 45,000 lbs. Which, to me, is ironic. I spent just about 30 years hauling freight all over the Country and depending on some variables (empty weight of the truck, etc.) that 40,000 to 45,000 lbs is about what the average 18 wheeler will (legally) carry. Doesn't have anything to do with anything, I just thought it was interesting!!!!! tinwhistle (Chris)

I hope I'm not too far off base on this, but here's the story: about an hour and a half north of where I live in Wisconsin is an Air force "live fire" range, called Hardwood Range. It's used almost every day and sometimes, if the conditions are right they let in the public to observe the activities. They have a hot line to check on the days schedule. So the other day I call up there and they have the range open and they have scheduled F-16s, helicopters, and C-130s!!!!! Here's where the wicket gets sticky: it's my wifes birthday.....So, in the end, she doesn't want to go but gives me her blessing, "go up and see your precious C-130!!!! I can't get my stuff in the pickup …

I'm thinking that this article/pics are about the capsules the 6594 TG were catching, or at least the recovery of one from the bottom of the ocean. It's from cnet.com. http://news.cnet.com/2300-11386_3-10013321-1.html

The word on the street is that 62-1829 is going to be a static display outside LRAFB at the new off campus Education complex?? I caught a glimpse of some nose writing displaying "City of Jacksonville" and a Razorback just above it. We'll see how this turns out. Dave

The 418th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, Calif., is putting the new High Speed Container Delivery System through the wringers. HSCDS, an evolution of the proven Container Delivery System airdrop method, would allow for the aerial delivery of supplies from C-130Js at lower altitudes and higher airspeeds, said Edwards officials in an Aug. 1 release. Initial developmental testing began in June and is expected to wrap up in late August. The testing includes increasing airdrop airspeed from 140 knots to 245 knots, reducing drop altitude to 250 feet above the ground, and using a parachute to extract up to eight 2,000-pound supply containers…

For what it's worth: There is a lot of conversation concerning individual military records and I just recieved some very interesting records. A few months ago I sent a request to the National Personnal Records Center, Military Personnel Records, 9700 Page Ave., St. Louis MO., 63132-5100, asking for all records they had on me; in fact the words I used were, any piece of paper or document that had my name on it. An amazing amount of paper just arrived. It certainly isn't everything generated by the A.F., but there are a number of documents that are absolutely facinating! My original enlistment papers, several performance evaluations, etc. There is even the personal letter f…

I'm considering the purchase of a GPS unit for my motorcycle and wondered if anyone was aware of any C-130 icons that can be downloaded. When you go on to the Garmin website they have multiple types of icons available, including some aviation-related ones (Spitfire, X-Wing fighter, and other generic "aircraft". I'm hoping that someone has created one for the 4-fan, trash can.
