I just saw an article saying that a Saudi VC-130H was recently in the UK. It was coded 485 of 4 Sq. I only have seen 2 VC-130H's in Saudi 111 4605 and 112 4737. Does anyone know what Serial number 485 is? Is there a 484? While we are there does anyone know if Turkey has any of the Saudi E models they bought flying yet? Thanks Bob

I arrived in Little Rock Air Force Base in 1972 from Clark. There was a C-130 crashed on the end of the runway. The accident investigation team determined it was called by a rudder fin stall. Does anybody remember that. I can't remember what a rudder fin stall was does anybody else.

While stationed at Clark AB, Philippines (Jan '68 - Nov 72) I remember watching a C-130 make an emergency landing. It was a perfect langing with a missing main gear on one side. Runway foamed and everything. Damage from the landing was absolute minimum. It seems all the major damage was done while the plane was doing touch-and-gos at Cubi Point in Subic Bay. The ends of the runways have seawalls and when the pilot come in low he left a main gear hanging on that seawall. While getting my flying time in while stationed at Dyess AFB (was on maint. flying status for the autopilot shop) I was on a C-130 flying local touch-and-gos on the rough strip parallel to the ma…

Hi there. Here in Australia our current govt has decided to get rid of their c130H aircraft and make the flight and ground crews redundant. As a natural resource manager I've been trying to lobby the govt about utilising the aircraft in aerial bushfire fighting. We current hire two heavy lift helicopters, but I see practicality rather than politcis and the cost doesn't make sense. So I need to build up a knowledge based research by those who use c-130h or J series for aerial firefighting. I was looking at the procedure to use infred scoping of fire fronts, tank engineering and rear door water release systems, using gravity and planes momentum and the experience of using …

Most photos I have seen of the J-model are without external tanks, but I have seen at least one J-model photo with externals (may have been a Brit). Is there a standard configuration, or is it by customer request?

Read an article the other day in the USAF web site about a LC 130 J operating at McMurdo Station Antartica but talking to the movement boys in Christchurch they have not seen any through this season. Are there any out there?

Rolls-Royce modifications to legacy C-130H T56 turboprop engines yielded even better fuel economy and reliability than predicted in recent trials at Edwards AFB, Calif., announced the company on Dec. 10. "The Air Force flight test team "confirmed that by inserting new technology, we can bring dramatic improvements in fuel consumption and engine reliability to C-130 operators," said Tom Hartmann, Rolls-Royce's senior vice president, in the company's release. Flying a C-130H fitted with both standard and modified T56 engines, testers at Edwards found that Roll-Royce's Series 3.5 upgrades reduced fuel burn by nearly 10 percent and increased reliability by 22 percent, accordi…

So we went and saw The Dark Knight Rises. The first ten minutes of the film involve a Herk and a feat that had me questioning if it was possible. This is so far the only link that I can find to give you a reference if you have not seen it http://jerrygarrett.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/how-the-aerial-stunt-was-filmed-in-dark-knight-rises/ Yes the special effects used a glider that looked like a turboprop. But would that be possible? eta- lets just say that the turboprop on average weighs 9800lbs. I think a herc can carry a maximum of 42000. But it is not a tow truck. Garbage scow, yes. Tow truck no. I would think the drag on the weight of the turboprop would factor in…

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum. I've been searching for many hours trying to find the amount of C-130s that are still in use by governments worldwide, but no luck. I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Also, if there is any database (free or paid) I would also be interested. Thanks for your help!!!

Like the rest of you guys, I am always looking for a new member that happens to be one of my old buddies at Naha , CCK, or Ubon. So far almost every day we have new members, but still not one of the guys I knew. I have noticed that almost every time I log in, there may be only a few members online and a whole bunch of visitors looking at the forum. So, since most of us have come across this forum by just looking for something involving the Herk, I am going to see if I/we can draw some of them in! I could add a whole list of names of guys that I would like to hear from but for now, lets try this. Remember me, Ken Carlson, from Columbus Montana I was stationed at Nah…

From the AF Assoc. daily report:The first MC-130J special-mission aircraft slated for conversion to the Air Force's new AC-130J gunship configuration made its maiden flight this week from Lockheed Martin's production facility in Marietta, Ga., announced the company. This airframe will feature the modular Precision Strike Package, a scalable weapons and sensor suite already carried on Air Force Special Operations Command's MC-130Ws. It is scheduled to fly as a gunship in early 2014, according to the company's Dec. 4 release. Lockheed Martin announced in July that it had begun assembling this airframe in Marietta. The Air Force intends to acquire 16 new-build AC-130Js under…

CENTERLINE is a story about a C-130 flight and medical crew taking wounded warriors home for Christmas. It was written by Dave McIntyre. Dave taught English at West Point and later served as the Dean of Academics and Faculty at the National War College. Dave's sons assisted in the technical editing--Roy, a third generation Army ranger, and Sam, a USAF pilot who recently returned from his 11th combat deployment. I am working with Jay Lavender (a Hollywood writer/producer) to turn it into a movie/TV mini-series. Last year, Jay and I made an award-winning short documentary on wounded warriors. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC71Be-Mb_Y) Dave, Jay and I talked about CENTERL…

You all remember the story of how, with the help from a buddy on this forum, I located and subsequently visited my old aircraft 877 down in Peoria IL. I took a ton of pictures of the activities on the flight line that evening, and I was just now going through them again and I think that this one is my favorite. I'm sure that all you crew chiefs out there (past and present) know of the bond between the "chief" and his bird. I love this image. How many times, I wonder, did I stand at the nose of 877 waiting for the bus to bring out the flight crew? The flight line is quiet, we stand there with our thoughts, hand on "our plane", almost a carress. tinwhistle (Chris)

With only the loadmaster on the new 130,s and 17ns as the loan inlisted man it must be awful lonely. At least in the old E's there were two who could go to the mess hall, or movie or sightsee together when on trips.
