Nose Radome Anti-Ice
by Guest- 20 replies

Several years ago, I recall there was an Air Force TCTO that disabled the (hot) bleed air nose radome anti-icing on most of the USAF C-130s. Supposedly, the hot air system was causing delamination and/or deterioration of the fiberglass layers in the radomes, driving the radome reliability rate down to an unacceptable level. It seems the new radome that comes on the J-model does not have an anti-icing capability either. Any feedback from flight crews on icing conditions (?), or was it never really a problem to begin with.

Been working this for about a week now. Little background on it. The plane left for depot two months ago with no hf problems, nothing in the previous 4 months as well. It landed at depot with #2 hf coupler fault and no tune tone. Depot serviced the coupler and were able to clear the fault and get the tune tone back, but they weren't able to transmit, blamed it on atmospherics , and wrote it up for an in-flight check. It landed back here with the no transmit problem. It tunes just fine, breaks squelch, no faults in any freq range, receive is crystal clear, just no transmit and no sidetone. We've swapped or replaced r/t's, r/t mounts, couplers, interloc…

hey guys, was wondering if there's any reference in the manuals that you guys can share regarding the limitations of wear and tear which requires replacement of the tires....currently we replace as soon as the threads are visible during post flight check....we are using goodyear 24-ply rating tires at the moment. appreciate it, thanks!

We just received a C-130 from another unit who had already performed the carbon fiber brake TCTO. (This is our only modified aircraft) The first time we towed the aircraft, all four main tires are making an unusual popping noise like loud popcorn popping. If you put your hand on the the transducer cap you can feel it as if someone was on the other side hitting it with a ball peen hammer. First I axle jacked each wheel and spun them by hand, but couldn't duplicate the noise. I removed all the tires, inspected the brakes and wheels and replaced the bearings and hardware. It still makes the noise. Anyone ever encounter this?

Hello guys. GTCP85-180L does not fire. It does not go beyond 20% rpm and there is no combustion. We have replaced FCU, oil pressure switch, oil sequencing switch, centrifugal switch, igniter plug, exciter yet no combustion. It just rolls but never achieves combustion. Any help please.

On the ISO work card deck, Card NO. 1-214 it says: D. FLOW CONTROL VALVE FILTER CONDITION; CLEAN BY ULTRASONIC METHOD (AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO 74-1658). The IPB does not show this filter. Has anyone ever delt with this before? Is the filter within the flow control valve? There should be one for the flt deck and cargo compartment. Thanks.

Hello! Has anyone ever experienced throttle creep? The problem we are having is that # 3 engine on acft 78000812 has a slight throttle creep when you pull the throttle lever up out of the ground idle detent and move it ahead 1/2 knob and let it go it will move on it's on without going into the flight idle detent. When it moves there is no change in engine settings all FF,TORQUE,RPM,TIT Remain the same.We checked the rigging and it was good all cable tension was dead on.We even changed the fuel control and coordinator and gimble assy. The problem is still there. I don't feel it is in the engine .Can anyone give me any input? You can email me at daniel.gothe@pittsburgh…

30 March: Just had a problem with an engine shutting down uncommanded during taxi. This is not the first time this has happened. The crew took it this time because they started back up and it was fine; this engine is a problem child. If we could get some help on this we would all very greatly appreciate it. If any more info is needed just let me know. Thanks a lot! Here is some history on it: 25 Feb: #4 Secondary Fuel Pump Pressure Light Illuminated. Changed the Secondary Fuel Pump Pressure Switch, it taxied out and came right back with the same problem. We changed the switch again, along with the paralelling valve and high pressure fuel filter. Ops check good. …

Does anyone have a good photo (or technical cocuments) of the "Roman Nose" C-130A looking aft at the nose? I am trying to get some good details of the two or three items on the nose. One I have been told is a taxi light but I cannot make out what the other(s) are. Are they ream air vents or other lights? This is the best I have found..... http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1054/1163487610_59a4aa6276.jpg?v=0 Any help is appreciated! David Horn II

I am new to this forum.. Retired USAF (Combat Loggie) .. We are in the process of selecting a C-130 from the D.M. AFB Bone Yard ... We have been given 160 Airframe numbers to choose from - Note: they aren't all there(???) .. My point is that two that we have tentatively settled upon have no Engines or Engine Housings.... .. We have to supply: Engines, Housing's and Radio Gear (actually anything needed to get the Planes ferried to the California Depot)... .. Or we have to "truck them to CA" - which is a way no-go option (California doesn't like or entertain the thought of trucking C-130's across the state). .. My Question is about the Turbines::: The Navy C…

Hello I’ve been around and learning with all of you for a while now but it’s my first time posting. My name is Rui and I’m a Herc driver in the Portuguese Air Force…. I’m also a proud SUPT grad! I did some of my best flying in the states…unfortunately not in the Herc The question I have is simple: would you, as a crew, have any special consideration while dumping with an outboard engine on fire? I’m asking because it is not in the flight manual and there as been some discussion in my sqn. about how you should dump in that situation. Some have the opinion that you should dump from the opposite dump mast only (we fly H models with dump valves). Some others say …

I got this question from a friend of mine @ Lynden. I haven't been on a Herc since 12/95 so I'm stumped. Any help? Don R. "A student asked me how to adjust the dip stick readings for the different fuels. JP-4, JP-5, JET-A, JET-A-1 and so on. Any ideas? Is there a chart? Which fuel is the dip stick calibrated to?"

Is there anything that says an engine run can be performed with a MLG door removed? I know the 71-00-1 pre-engine run inspection checklist says "Closed, Secured," but what about in the event a door is removed?

With TD NULL, the engine having a good start TIT(800°C) and a good acceleration, whereas during Auto start the engine start TIT Struggling to reach the 700°C with a very slow acceleration. Is there any possibility that the malfunction is related to a defective TD valve? If so, is there any technical clarification to this point?
